“Idiots in tennessee”

The video from the articles plus full interview. Was as I said, accent on the é. Véscovi. He said he doesn't really mind, though people would always stress the "co". Anyway, he's been playing some really good ball lately. Played well against Nova and UNC.

Thanks for this, LucidZ. I clearly hear the first syllable accented here. In the clip posted early in the thread, though, I still hear the second syllable accented. I have a suspicion (strengthened after hearing this interview) that in that earlier clip he was intentionally anglicizing his name to make it easier for Americans to hear and say (I had to adapt my own name to the phonology of Greek when I was in Greece, since it involves some sounds not present in Greek). I acknowledge, though, that I may just still be hearing it wrong.

I think you may be right. Like he said, he just kinda went with it. Are you Greek? I'd love to visit Greece and Italy. Love the history.

No, my roots are in Middle Tennessee.

I haven't made it to Italy, but I'm grateful I had the opportunity to spend time in Greece. It was eye-opening to to me see how greatly our view of something being of historical interest due to its age differed from theirs 😁

I can imagine. Have talked before to an Italian girl and we were talking about history. I was saying how the period of the Roman Empire was one of my favorite periods to learn about, but I can't imagine that some native Italians really care for something they see every day. What part of Greece? I'd like to see Athens, then go down into Tripoli and Sparti. I also enjoy mythology.

I was in Athens mostly. I remember seeing the ruins of a segment of a Roman aqueduct at an otherwise unremarkable suburban intersection (such as here might be home to a Circle C and a Dollar General). When I asked about it, my host, wholly unimpressed, answered nonchalantly that it was a bit of aqueduct.

Another time, I was on a bus in the countryside around Larisa when we passed a ruined medieval fortress. I excitedly asked the person in the seat next to me what it was. He replied with apparent surprise, "a castle," perplexed, it seemed, either because he thought I didn't know what a castle was or because he didn't understand why I found seeing one remarkable.

I don't mean to suggest that the Greeks don't care deeply about their antiquities -- they certainly do. It's just that, due to how many very old things are lying about, there's a very different standard for what the average person finds noteworthy.

When did he get the Southern twang? 🤔😂🤣

FWIW, the PA announcer at the game, today, pronounced it Ves-kuh-vee (emphasis on first syllable), as did Bob and Bert in the postgame.

I noticed that Bob and Bert had to correct themselves a couple of times. It must be hard after saying Ves-CO-vi for two years to say VES-co-vi during live action, so I thought they did an admirable job overall.

Jeff Jarnigan. He is a pro with that stuff. He’s also one of the most genuine, super nice person you’d ever meet. I miss Bobby Denton’s voice in Neyland Stadium, but Jarnigan has competently replaced that legend. Kesling? Meh. Not so much. Although having Bert sitting next to him for basketball helps. BTW, I miss Tim Priest. Big drop off to Pat Ryan.

I agree with all that, but the last 2 sentences. Priest is a lot more entertaining than Ryan, but Ryan knows the offensive game, a million times better. Ryan will call the play early multiple times a game, for both teams. I guess that's the advantage of having a former NFL QB as Bob"s sidekick.

Last one, not two. I miss Tim Priest. Ryan is too whiny and dull for what I prefer. Personality is important with the hot mics.

Jeff Jarnigan. Fulton High class of 1977. Great guy.

I really enjoy Ryan’s technical knowledge of the game myself

Yeah, I knew JJ was a Fulton alum and agree. The Radio Broadcasting teacher, because Fulton has a radio station and a TV station, bragged about him all the time back in '85, when I was a freshman

Actually I’ve not listened to him close enough. 4 or 5 times I didn’t have a radio in Neyland and all but one or two others that I watched on TV, the audio wasn’t synced very well with the video.

Priest was no slouch at breaking down the action. But from a safety’s perspective rather than a QB.

He might have been producing the Coach Billy Joe Tom Bob Parker around that time. Curtis Parham and Walker Johnson. Jeff Jacoby participated in some capacity, but CP was the star. Walker was the straight man. I wish they’d do a 5 minute bit each week.

I remember Coach Billy Joe Tom Bob Parker, but did not know Jarnigan was the producer

Muat we always look for things to be offended over. If you feel he was talking about you, he's probably talking about you.

Ryan is very knowledgeable, but has a very drab delivery. For me, Denton was just pure tradition. “Pay these prices, and please pay no more.”
