⚽️ Lady Vols Soccer

Vols soccer starts in season with an exhibition match against alabama in a week---and yet not a word on UTSports.com
or Daily Beacon. Non-revenue sports don't get the respect they deserve, especially given the high quality of the student-athletes
and coaches. A few days ago UTSports was streaming interviews with the new men's basketball signees--a winter sport--and of course
endless football stories.

Better get @briancrice on that…

Totally freakish that Jamaica is through to the knockout round--but also another choke job by Brazil, which finds a way to crash out of
every World Cup. Jamaica scored 1 goal in three matches---against Panama--and didn't even have a shot on goal today, but somehow managed
to keep not one but two clearly superior teams (France and Brazil) from scoring in their matches. So credit to Jamaica for that. Soccer, more than any other sport, provides an assist to the underdog because of the basic difficulty of scoring, but even so Jamaica's results are astounding. They had very little possession against France or Jamaica, had 2 SOG against France, 0 against Brazil, but managed to get a point from each match. For the Vols it means that Simmonds will now miss all of training camp and will probably need at least a week's rest when she does get back, as she has been training every day with Jamaica. Exciting time for her.

Winner of group H plays Jamaica, team that finishes second plays France.

Group H
  • Colombia (6 points): Can advance with a win or draw against Morocco or a loss by less than five goals. Can win the group with a win or draw.
  • Germany (3 points): Can advance by matching or bettering Morocco's result. Can win the group with a win against South Korea and a Colombia loss.
  • Morocco (3 points): Can advance with a win over Colombia. Can win the group with a win plus a Germany draw or loss, or a win plus a Germany win plus by overcoming a goal differential of 10.
  • South Korea (0 points): Can advance with a five-plus goal win over Germany.IMG_3219.jpeg

Well that’s par for the course. I’m not a soccer fan at all, but it would be great if we heard some news about soccer, tennis (men’s and ladies), swimming, track and field, volleyball, etc. It’s a real shame. Maybe people on this site can fill us in what’s happening.

If we could get by Sweden and Japan, to reach the final 4, then we can win it all.

But, I know those are big ifs, given the way we have been playing. Must do something different to ignite our offense, obviously.

It will be interesting to see what happens if they get to play England in the quarters. No team in the tournament can afford to take it to kicks against Mary Earps. She is in a class by herself. Jamaica would have to play forward and leave the backdoor exposed to the counter.
