⚽️Lady Vols Soccer Thread

Some solid interviews with the players and Kirt above. A decent collection of questions. I liked that some of the press were asking specific questions as well, not just the usual, general "how's the team doing" stuff that we often get. It would have been nice if Kirt had been asked if he likes the team's depth and maybe whether he thinks some of the freshman can help this year, but overall, good stuff.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 11 Tennessee collected a 5-1 exhibition win over Dayton in Regal Stadium on Saturday in the team's final tune-up before the regular season.

Thirty Lady Vols saw the field with four different players finding the net. Sophomore Taylor Huff led UT in scoring with two goals, while fifth-year senior Mackenzie George, sophomore Jordan Fusco and freshman Kameron Simmonds each netted one apiece.

In goal, redshirt-freshman Ally Zazzara got the start, playing 74 minutes and logging two saves. Freshman Abby Reisz closed out the game in the net, notching one save.

Fusco put Tennessee on the board in the eighth minute, slotting a shot low into the left corner from inside the 18-yard box off a pass from redshirt-junior Jaida Thomas.

Dayton leveled it up in the 19th minute when Jessica Sheldon scored on a breakaway.

Eight minutes later, redshirt-junior Maria Nelson threaded a pass through two defenders to find Huff breaking into the box. Huff one-touched it far post to put the Lady Vols back ahead 2-1.

George scored early in the second half, knocking one through several defenders from two yards out off an entry pass from Thomas.

Huff struck again in the 60th minute, converting on a penalty kick after graduate Hannah Zaluski was fouled in the box.

Simmonds rounded out the scoring for UT, getting a head on a cross from junior Maddie Eskin in the 65th minute and driving a goal near post past the Dayton keeper.

UP NEXT: The Lady Vols will open the season on the road, traveling to Chapel Hill for a 7 p.m. matchup against #10 North Carolina on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee assistant coach Becky Edwards is serving as an assistant coach of the U.S. Under-20 Women's Youth National Team under head coach Tracey Kevins at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica.

Edwards joined the U-20 coaching staff in June, traveling to France for the 2022 Sud Ladies Cup where the USA went undefeated against France, Mexico, and the Netherlands to bring home the title.

The USA is currently competing in the group stage at the World Cup and won its opening match against Ghana on Thursday, 3-0. The squad will be back in action on Sunday against the Netherlands at 7 p.m. ET (FS1). When the teams met in June, they played to a 2-2 draw. The USA's final group stage match will be against Japan at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Aug. 17 (FS2).

"We are very excited for Becky and the entire U.S. team as they look to bring home a World Championship from Costa Rica," said Tennessee head coach Joe Kirt. "It's an incredible opportunity for Becky to win a second U-20 World Cup, this time as part of the coaching staff. We are excited for her to join us later this month but know she has unfinished business in Costa Rica right now."

Following the group stage, the top two finishers of each group advance to the quarterfinals, to be held on Saturday, Aug. 20 and Sunday, Aug. 21. The winners of those matches move on to the semifinals on Thursday, Aug. 25. The Championship and Third-Place match will be played on Sunday, Aug 28. The USA is one of four teams to have qualified for every FIFA WWC at the U-20 level, along with three-time champions Germany, Brazil and Nigeria.

In the last couple of days, Notre Dame did not post a word about the tonight's exhibition--nothing on website, no tweets, zero. I found it rather bizarre. Not that I expect any team to make a big deal of an exhibition; still, it's something. In contrast, Duke had a story on its match with Georgia that was no different from a regular-season game story (though no statistics).

Nice win, and while only an exhibition, it follows victories that we had in the spring over both Clemson and Virginia Tech, which like Notre Dame, are solidly in the 2nd tier off the super-strong ACC. None of the wins have been official, of course, but every win builds confidence.

RE Simmonds: I saw some video of her after she committed and was impressed--athletic, strong, and can score.

Let's hope all is well with George. She must have some sort of knock if she didn't play. Hope it's more precautionary than anything.
Notre Dame never mentioned anything about the match with Tennessee, it’s like it didn’t happen. Figured they just don’t report on preseason exhibitions.

Wait, this was from today 🤔
