When my daughter was about 10(?) her soccer club team was the ball girls for a Lady Vols game. I heard rumor that Mia Hamm was going to be on attendance, she was friends with Angela Kelly. We bought a new soccer ball on our way to the game and after, when all the other girls and fans were getting autographs of the Lady Vols, I took my daughter to the other end, by the elevator of the press boxes. She was upset because she was missing the chance at autographs but I told her to be patient. After a few minutes, the elevator opened and Nomar Garciaparra came out with a kid. Of course no one recognized Nomar and I knew it was only a matter of time. About 5 minutes later, the elevator opened again and out walked Mia Hamm! My daughters jaw hit the ground!! Mia signed her ball and I have a pic of them somewhere. But only my daughter and one other girl, who happened to be walking by, got an autograph. We were the only ones to get an autograph and photo!
Dad got some major cred that night!!

That is a wonderful story, it’s cool you know the ropes. The only hook up my dad got me was the guy who preformed with the lions at the circus who turned out to really be the guy who picked up the elephant poop.

Ha, ha: I guess I got my karmic comeuppance from the UTAD and the Soccer program with the new uniforms. Perhaps I deserve it! Just as I renew my complaints about the old LV name and logo, they double down with the thing! I don't know whether to laugh or cry--I'm laughing, mostly.

Has any women's team at UT used this "Summitt blue" color in a uniform before? I don't think so, so it's a little odd that the soccer team--as opposed to women's basketball team, say--would be the first. Is this a Summitt anniversary year of some kind? I wonder why they've chosen now for a legacy uniform. I've never understood why the UTAD opted to go with a touch of baby-blue hue in the original LV logo, to begin with. The University of North Carolina. for which baby (Carolina) blue has always been one of its two school colors, actually moved to a darker hue in 2015 as some in the athletic department thought the original baby blue was too soft.

The origin and uses of the blue from UT’s website:

“The first version of the Lady Vols' blue accent color appeared in 1968 when Joan Cronan set out to obtain jerseys for the women's basketball team. At the time, no company offered an orange uniform, so Cronan opted for Columbia blue uniforms with orange lettering when the Lady Vols played at home.

Later, when orange uniforms became available, Tennessee switched to the traditional orange jerseys but a touch of Summitt Blue has remained.

Blue also has appeared on Tennessee men's uniforms in the past, as the men's basketball program used a shade of blue as an accent color on its jerseys during the head coaching tenure of Ray Mears in the 1960s.”

Nobody is trying to change the school colors. The same shade of blue has been used since the 1970s, it has just now been given a formal name.
You can say they aren’t, but they are. We got stuck with blue in 1968 because the company couldn’t make an Orange uniform. Now, there’s no excuse. Last year, our football and baseball teams were sometimes not even recognizable as Tennessee teams. I am ashamed of our school when our teams don’t look like Tennessee. It looks like we’re trying to follow in the footsteps of a school like Oregon.
So, the womens teams are adding blue, and we tack Summitt’s name to it so no one will complain. Nothing I think or say will change what’s happening, so all I can say is:

GO BIG ORANGE!!!

Thanks for the backstory. Personally, I love the connection and the history. Adding Lady doesn’t bother me, my only concern is if it helps or hurts recruiting.

Tennessee's Kameron Simmonds (9) passes the ball during Tennessee Lady Vols soccer media day at Regal Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2022.

Excerpt:

A talented freshman class

No. 6 incoming freshman class in the nation.

Freshman forward Kameron Simmonds scored one of UT's three goals Tuesday, assisted by freshman midfielder Macaira Midgley, and all 10 freshmen saw the field.

Tennessee coach Joe Kirt said the freshmen have been "amazing" in adjusting to the team this summer. Fifth year senior midfielder Abbey Burdette said the freshmen were in for a surprise when they arrived – but not the reasons one would assume.

"I think at first the freshmen are always shocked at how much fun we have," Burdette said. "That's kind of how we have our success is that balance between like the competitiveness and the fun that we have. So kind of getting them on that page, like, 'Hey, we want to have fun. That's how we're good.' It's definitely been a learning curve. But they're kind of getting into it."
