NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's soccer head coach Kelly Lawrence announces the hiring of Becky Edwards as the program's new associate head coach, who is set to start on Wednesday, Jan. 1.

"Becky will be an excellent addition to our coaching staff and program," Lawrence said. "She has championship-level experience at every level, both as a player and as a coach, and we're excited about the prospect of learning from her as we continue to elevate this program and strive to win championships!"

Prior to joining the Blue Hens staff, Edwards spent three seasons with Tennessee. The Volunteers boasted a 29-20-10 record in the three seasons Edwards was there, including three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. In 2022, the Volunteers offense ranked second in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in goals per game at 2.26, and third in total goals with 43 en route to a SEC East Division Co-Championship.

Before her time in Rocky Top, Edwards was an assistant coach at Penn for one season. She helped lead the Quakers to a 9-5-2 record in 2021 and working directly with the offense, which turned in 29 goals over 16 games.

Edwards was a graduate assistant at her alma mater, Florida State, assisting the staff with training and film sessions as the Seminoles mounted an 18-6-0 record en route to a postseason run to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2019 and capturing the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) title in the fall of 2020, going 11-0 in conference play.

Outside of collegiate coaching, Edwards is a current assistant coach for the US U-20 Women's National Team. With US women's soccer, the team won a bronze medal in the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, and a a silver medal in the CONCACAF U20 Championships

During her playing career, Edwards was an accomplished athlete at both the collegiate and professional levels. A two-time First Team All-America selection, she led Florida State to a 72-18-11 record during her four years, making NCAA Tournament appearances every season and twice advancing to the College Cup. She was named to the Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.

She graduated magna cum laude from FSU in 2010 before being drafted as the 12th overall pick in the 2010 Women's Professional Soccer draft, leading FC Gold Pride to a WPS Championship in her rookie season. That was the start of a nine-year pro career which also included titles with Western NY Flash and Portland Thorns, as well as two stints in Sweden.

At the international level, Edwards captained the United States to the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup title, and in 2011 she helped the U.S. U-23 National Team win a championship at the Four Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain. Following that performance, she earned a call-up to the senior USWNT camp.

"I am honored to join the Delaware Women's Soccer program. I would like to thank Kelly Lawrence and Chrissi Rawak for this great opportunity. I am looking forward to joining the Delaware community, and I am eager to help build on the strong foundation that Kelly and her staff have already put in place," Edwards said.

Definitely a promotion for Edward’s, going from just an assistant to Associate Head Coach.
Wish her well.

I think she’s from Philly so it was probably more of the location than a money thing for sure. Her ties to the National teams had to be a recruiting advantage for us so that will be missed for sure. Now we have an opportunity to add another defensive oriented coach to the staff

On Friday night, the stars of ECNL St. Louis took the field for the Continental Tire ECNL National Selection Game at World Wide Technology Soccer Park for a high-scoring showdown, highlighted by a superstar four goal performance from FC Alliance’s Jayla Blue. (ROSTERS)

The East got on the board five minutes in when Audrey McKeen (VDA) found Blue inside the box with a perfect pass that was fired home to put the East on top 1-0. Just minutes later, Blue found the back of the net again for her second goal of the night to double the East lead inside the first 10 minutes.

The East continued to pile the pressure on the West in the first half. Gatorade National Girls Player of the Year Maddie DiMaria (SLSG Navy) nearly gave the East their third, but Sophia Hall (Penn Fusion SA) kept the score at 2-0 with a great save.

The West had a few chances to cut into the East lead midway through the half, but Caroline Birkel (SLSG Navy) stood strong in goal while also getting some help from the crossbar in the 29th minute, to keep the game at 2-0.

In the second half, goalkeepers Vanessa Cabrera (Pateadores) and Vivian Wheeler (San Juan SC) both made big saves in the opening moments of the half to keep the score at 2-0.

In the 53rd minute though the offenses for both teams exploded, with four goals being scored in a back and forth four minute stretch.

Madie Donovan (Sporting Iowa) chased down a ball that ricocheted off the post and put in the rebound to cut the East lead in half at 2-1.

The East responded moments later though, as Blue scored her third goal of the night to complete her hat trick and restore the East’s two goal lead.

The West immediately answered though as Donovan scored again to cut the lead to 3-2, but just a minute after Donovan’s goal, Blue responded again, scoring her fourth goal of the night to once again restore the East’s two goal edge.

The two sides weren’t done scoring though. Sadie Peterson (Charlotte SA) made a tremendous run into the box and fired home the fifth goal of the night for the East, before Maci Barlow (Seattle United) fired a missile from distance into the back of the net in the closing minutes to give the West their third, resulting in a 5-3 final.

After the game, Blue was named the Player of the Match for her incredible four goal performance that led the charge for the East. In front of an incredible crowd, Blue said the East’s chemistry was amazing and helped the team get off to a great start.

“The girls were amazing. The atmosphere was great,” Blue said. We clicked immediately and the chemistry was awesome. I wanted to score a hat trick, but I guess I had to go above and beyond.”

LVFL Defender M.A. Vignola Signs Two-year Extension

IMG_1333.jpegIMG_1334.jpeg

Today, Angel City announced that defender M.A. Vignola has agreed to a two-year contract extension through 2026. Vignola was the third player to be named to the inaugural ACFC roster in 2021.

“I am beyond grateful to be staying in LA! I feel fortunate to have the best teammates along with supportive coaches and staff who I know will help me continue to grow my game,” Vignola said. “The rush of emotion and excitement that our fans bring to BMO every single game is unmatched. I’m excited to give my all, on and off the field, for our team, fans and community next season. See you soon!”

"M.A. Vignola is an exceptional talent who is truly beginning to understand her potential and how to work toward fulfilling it," said Technical Director Mark Wilson. "Her versatility is a tremendous asset, allowing her to attack from wide areas, create goal scoring opportunities, and disrupt defenders. We are thrilled to extend M.A.'s time with Angel City FC as she continues to grow as a player and as an integral part of our future moving forward."

Since the 2022 inaugural season, Vignola has appeared in 43 total matches in all competitions for ACFC, clocking 2,278 total minutes on the pitch while earning four goals and three assists. After sitting out almost the entire 2022 season with injury, she had a breakout year in 2023, notching three goals and one assist. She again dealt with injuries in 2024, but recorded a goal and two assists in her limited playing time, including assisting the game-winner against Chicago Red Stars on September 1.

In 2023, she was named to the NWSL Best XI Second Team and also earned her first U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) cap in her hometown of Cincinnati on September 21 in a 3-0 victory against South Africa.

A standout at the University of Tennessee, Vignola started for the Volunteers from 2016–2019, recording 14 goals and 13 assists in 57 career games. In her junior and senior seasons, she was named to the All-SEC and United Coaches All-Region teams. Vignola also competed in Iceland for the Icelandic Women’s Football league clubs Thróttur FC and Valur before being signed by the Washington Spirit.
