You are insane if you think Dooley was, or was ever going to be the answer here.

If u were capable of understanding u would of understood that imo he wasn't given the time for anyone to truly judge that. We r sitting here in this thread wondering how to beat Saban, and we just had a coach that knows Saban better than most. Now we are sitting here hoping a guy, that couldn't beat the coach he replaced, learns from scratch how to consistently beat the best coach of our time. Yeah we r in a good place right now bud.

ROE is what this thread is about and ur ad decided to go budget shopping because he has an ego. He really believes he can pick the next Saban when in reality he really just wants to be good enough to be left alone and get paid..

8 N 4 the new tn standard n whats worse our fans will support it...

Face it tn was at a crossroads in football n we blew it. Cbj might work out but I don't see any championship headed our way..

Remember Fulmer was given that tn should be in the sec cg 1 every 3 years. Should we hold every other coach to that standard???????????????? If not I don't know what to say.....

Saban isn't leaving Alabama. But the lesson we can learn from their good fortune is this is what happens when you are willing to spend silly money and make a big pitch and go after the best coaching candidate out there. Even if they turn you down, you just keep after them, giving them whatever they want, until they say yes. But did Hart go after Gruden or Peterson or any other A-list guy with that kind of enthusiasm? Nope. His first public offer was to Charlie Strong (and you can make up stories all you like that people turned him down behind the scenes, but there isn't a shred of evidence to that effect, and really, if you haven't made a public offer, you really haven't tried).

You apparently haven't paid attention to our last two hires. This AD doesn't like to spend money on a top coach. Saban isn't leaving bammer for anyone for any price cause the elephants will match it. Saban actually has people saying... "Bear who?"

In Dooley's first season, the ref's cost us two games. UNC & LSU.

In Dooley's second season, we have injuries to Bray, Hunter & Lathers and no real depth to replace them.

In Dooley's third season, had Wilcox remained as the D.C., we would have beaten Florida, Miss St. Missouri., USC, UGA, Our only losses would have been to Alabama & Vandy. We played horribly in those two games.

Our record would have been 10 - 2 before heading to the S.E.C. Championship game. We lose to Bama again and then head to the Sugar Bowl.....

What we need is a Saban-like PROCESS (yes I said it because Saban said it a bunch last night) at UT. It starts from the time the kids are recruited. They have to have a program/process that they can believe in. Belief in a coach and that coaches system can over come a lot of talent deficit. CBJ could have that system and all it takes is the belief. Only time will tell. I would rather win a NC with CBJ than Saban. Much more cost effective.

If we would offer saban 10 million with a 3 million assistant salary pool we would get a championship in 4 years. you can shoot me down and it is a crazy amount of money but hes a speacial coach.

Now back in reality I support Butch 100% and think we will do fine, and maby win the east, but goodness. Its not really about them beat ND that was expected. Its the 3 championships in 4 years that makes me think we will never beat bama with him coaching there without bama having a bad game.

I would prefer we just pull our heads out of our seats and beat them, but that is just me.

Age will catch up to Saban like it does every coach.Look at Mack Brown and Frank Beamer. The game is passing them by.It even passed Bear Bryant by.

I'd be thrilled with 8-4 next year. But what about four years from now? At some point the fans will get to where they're just happy to be playing in a bowl game every year again, and they no longer expect to be able to compete with Georgia and Florida and Alabama anymore anyway, and boy the tailgating is still great, and then you're Minnesota.

Damn fella !! Let's play next years games before we worry about what will happen in 4 years. Take your meds. and calm down before you develop ulcers.

I wouldn't go 10 mil, but I'd top his salary right now. One thing Alabama did when they were down, they paid the money to get the man they wanted. Good plan on their part.

If you offered to service Saban from your knees, they would probably let you become an official Bama fan. I can't think of anything more embarrassing than the thought of us trying to hire Alabama's coach away from them. It would be more embarrassing than if Kiffin had left us for Memphis.

If Wilcox had thought we would be 10-2 I doubt he would have jumped ship. The ship was sinking after Kentucky. Do you remember that game? Are you serious or just messing with Oskie?

Gruden has no business claiming the right to earn Saban money. He has never won jack in college. Saban had an SEC and NC to his name. I disagree on your assessment about a public offer. No reason to throw out a public offer if you can find out the answer otherwise. Peterson is any easy one. He has made it very clear he has no interest in leaving Boise. A simple call to his agent could have determined if their is any wiggle room in that idea, without making an offer that we are sure gets rejected. Other than those 2, who else is out there that would be willing to jump into the SEC, while it is at it's historic peak, with a team that is hindered by a weak recruiting base? Who wants to try an out recruit Saban,Muschamp,Miles,Richt et al, with the very real possibility of a fan base demanding your head in 2 to 3 years? You could offer 6 million, but the downside is that you coaching career is over if the likely happens, which is that UT doesn't return to the top of the SEC in 2 to 3 years. I think that is one reason Charlie Strong turned us down. Even if offered 2 x as much as Louisville, in the long run he has much more earning potential by not taking the UT job, making himself available for a more desirable HC job in the next 2 to 3 years.

Bear won a national championship in 1979 (12-0) and retired in 1982.

yea but comparing UT to Minnesota is like comparing (insert favorite beautiful actress) to a tranny who hangs out behind the waffle house on tuesday night

Minnesota's probably won more legitimate national championships than Tennessee has. They were one of the top teams in the country for decades. I'm sure there were Golden Gopher fans in the 70s and 80s who just assumed that they were going through a rebuilding period too, and that eventually they'd get back to where they were supposed to be. It never happened, and eventually being a punching bag became the new normal.

My point is that there are no guarantees, even for college football's historically top programs. There's not for Tennessee; there's not for Michigan. There wasn't for Oklahoma until they hired Bob Stoops and there wasn't for Alabama until they hired Nick Saban. You can't just assume it's coming back; you have to do what you can to go grab it. Tennessee has not hired coaches in recent years like we understand that.

There were four open SEC jobs this year and we made arguably the most underwhelming hire out of all of them. Our coaching search was a disaster. I think it's reasonable to speculate on the future direction of the program if Butch Jones doesn't happen to develop into a championship coach.
