The sad thing about all of this is that the smart move would be to wait for the season to start. He mentioned how him committing early would help with recruiting but honestly does Florida or USC need help in recruiting? I think not. The smart move would be to see who's going to start for USC, see how cum changes his offense more to a proset haha. Or to see how Kiffins offense is run and to see how Stephens plays. Smart move in my book. Go Vols

If I were attempting to keep my commitment silent, here's the only people I would feel safe to tell (in no order of importance):

1. People who make their living off of internet recruiting sites

2. People who make their livings off of reporting about football recruiting

3. Random strangers who contact me on MySpace

4. ESPN crews, attendees at Elite 11 camps, and other shadowy "anonymous" figures

That's just me, though.

In fact, I'd never spread (nor have anyone else do it for me) purposefully misleading information, just to veil my true intentions. Not in a million years.

So, with that, we can all be sure that if Hubbs, Hooker, "X" and others listed above haven't said it, or have said USC must be true, well, i guess it just has to be true.

Would the first person who doesn't detect the sarcasm in my words please hit yourself in the head with a tack hammer?

Word is that Aaron Corp is going to start for USC this year. That tells me Matt Barkley is likely to redshirt.

lol....that is what I have been trying to communicate on here for 2 days

Originally, I submitted this as a blog to Freak, but as its time-sensitive, he's asked me to post it here, amidst the thread. Please enjoy.

I don’t profess to know what school Jesse Scroggins (JS) may verbally pledge to attend, and outside of 4-5 people (if even that many), neither does anyone else. One could argue that his recruitment is somewhat of a topic of conversation on the VN message boards, with his thread likely topping the 11K post mark as I am typing this. Unfortunately, many of those posts have an air of doubt and downright dejectedness about them, as most believe that JS is solidly USC-bound. That may well turn out to be the case, as many signs undoubtedly point in that direction, but perhaps not. The following is largely my own personal speculation as to the most recent events surrounding the recruitment of JS, and an attempt to offer several alternative theories as to why they have occurred, and more importantly, what they could possibly mean. Also, please note that this blog is being delivered by someone who is both admittedly, ardently and notably biased for all things Tennessee. The existence of such bias has undoubtedly weighed heavily in my writing it, and should be carefully considered and closely-scrutinized before being found credible enough to use in the formulation of your own thoughts, opinions or ideas. With that, here is the shot from the grassy knoll, to help you pass the time until the actual announcement:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

I believe that JS gave his silent commitment to his staff during his visit to Knoxville. Later today, he'll give his verbal commitment to Tennessee, and it will remain, unwavering, until NSD.

I sense the cacophony of protest rising which such an assertion will likely cause. “Hubbs doesn’t feel good about it!”, “He denied giving a silent commit on his visit in the interview with Hooker!”, “Such-and-such is usually dead-on in knowing these things, and he (or she, if your source is the lovely Volleygirl) hasn’t said anything of the sort!”

Barring your “source” of information is anyone other than the 4-5 people in the universe who know about it, they are about as reliable in foretelling these events as an epileptic trying to read and recite the messages appearing in the Sanskrit version of a magic 8-ball. Think of it as an “ultra-silent” commit, where not everyone knows it has occurred – even amongst the staff, or those others without the need to know….so you can take the intern who works in the bowels of the UTAD off of speed-dial for the time being, as he won’t be of any help to you in solving this.

This “ultra-silent” (I’m going to copyright that phrase) commit hasn't leaked for two reasons:

1. Because JS wanted to fulfill his (and his dad's) long-time personal goal of receiving an offer from USC, and it was a requirement that his dad made on him before making his final decision. Had the verbal leaked, he would not have been given a free and fair opportunity to compete for the single QB scholarship that USC was offering at their camp, signifying the accomplishment of a life-long goal that both he and his Dad have spent years in its pursuit.

To start, it should be noted that while USC hates to lose a recruit, they detest and do everything to prevent another program from being able to crow about it.

Case in point: Bryce Brown's recruitment. Recall that USC was listed alongside the other major teams being considered for most of his recruitment: UT, USC, LSU, K-State (as I used the term, “major teams”, by definition, I cannot list Oregon, though there were rumors he considered them as well). Some argued that USC may have even been the leader to land him….until they suddenly announced that they were no longer recruiting him. What happened? Well, once BB announced additional trips to UT and LSU – and not USC – the writing was on the wall. In the classic, “You can’t fire me, because I quit!” moment, USC thought it best to drop him, first. In doing so, though unnoticed by those too caught in the euphoria of landing BB, it turned out to be CLK & Co. who were not allowed to do the crowing of having beaten USC out for him, thought that’s exactly what they did, along with several others.

So what does this have to do with JS? Well, everything.
The manner in which a player is named, “MVP” of a particular school’s camp, is about as democratically sound as the most recent Iranian national election results. In a word, it’s “rigged”. Rarely does the, “most valuable” camper win the award, but rather, it goes to those players who are being most heavily recruited at a particular school. What’s this have to do with JS? Well, given USC’s cowardly penchant for not fighting for a recruit that they may lose, and the very nature of camp “competitions” in general, it should be obvious. All can agree that JS’ earlier comments best explained the significance of receiving an offer from USC – but few wondered if this was the only reason why it was so significant. Some speculate that acquiring a USC offer was the sole stipulation which JS’ Dad (a life-long USC fan) has required of him before a final decision was made (or certainly announced). Simply, JS would be free to go wherever he felt best, and with his Dad’s full support – so long as he had a legitimate offer from USC in-hand before making his final decision. JS won the USC competition and was extended the prized USC scholarship offer – and unbeknownst to them, likely punched his ticket, not across town, but to Knoxville.

2. It was equally important to CLK that JS win the USC offer, but not only for JS’s recruitment alone – but for another prized prospect – Chase Rettig. “How?!” you may be shouting at the screen (despite the fact that I cannot hear you)? Allow me to explain how JS’ winning the scholarship offer at USC’s camp also created a perfect storm which CLK hoped to use in landing Rettig, too.

It’s awkward to feel as if you’re someone’s second choice in anything, be it as a spouse (or “life mate” for the vast majority Gator fans), dancing partner, or certainly, as a quarterback. You find yourself constantly looking over your shoulder for the ghost of someone who you suspect that they’d much prefer than you. While undoubtedly awkward, some things are even worse than merely suspecting that you’re someone’s “second choice” – for instance, being told that you are, in fact, the second choice. Even worse, imagine being told that you were not only the second choice, but with the finality of being so informed, publicly.

Much has been made of the attraction that JS’ likely feels toward USC, living only 20 minutes away from their campus. Like JS, many QB’s living in equally close proximity shared the same attraction. Such was certainly the case with Chase Rettig, who grew up in nearby Sierra Madre, only 30 minutes outside of LA.

Similarly, Rettig shared JS’ his life-long goal of receiving an offer to play QB for the Trojans, and thus, competed with him at USC’s camp for the single scholarship which they would offer in the 2010 class. As elated as JS must have been to learn that he had won the offer, Rettig must have been equally dejected in losing. That the USC staff informed Rettig that he would only be offered a scholarship in the event that he (JS) signed elsewhere was only further salt into an already fresh and gaping wound. In so doing, USC slapped Rettig’s face with the “second choice” glove with a ferocity not seen in LA since Michael put Tito in his place. CLK, knowing that JS was locked up and needing to sign two QB’s in this class, and in hopes of taking advantage of what he saw unfolding, only offered Rettig after the USC camp – after JS had received the offer from USC, and before anyone knew how he may still decide. Essentially, Tennessee’s offer told Rettig that, unlike USC, that he was wanted here. Of course, we still sought and would sign JS, too, but without instilling the same “second choice” syndrome which Rettig was likely still smarting from as a result of the USC rejection. While the timing of the offer was quizzical at the moment, in hindsight, it couldn’t have been more perfect.

To many, our offering Rettig was a not-so-subtle sign that we “knew” that JS was USC-bound - when just the opposite was actually true. In knowing that JS was sewn-up, CLK went after their second choice, and a QB we were high on in his own right, only they went after the “second choice”, first (at least publicly). And the plan could have worked…..if it weren’t for those meddling kids from BC.

As we now know, only a few days after receiving Tennessee’s offer, Rettig unexpectedly announced his intention to commit to BC, further fanning the rumors of JS’ impending commitment to USC. The “rumor” of which I speak went something along these lines: Rettig “knew” that JS was going to USC, so there was no chance that he would receive the coveted offer, if only by default. There are two possible theories which are contrary to this widely held belief (and which only Rettig could answer, at least definitively). Rettig, having been recently spurned by his hometown school, and tired of waiting on the decisions of others before making his own (who can blame him?) was simply unwilling to continue waiting to see what JS might do (be it USC or Tennessee), or to accept an offer which would have only been extended to him by default, if at all. As a result, he went where he felt most wanted – BC. His comments following his commitment only underscore the importance of BC being the first to offer, and faithful in their continual recruitment. BC didn’t care what JS was going to do, and at that point, that’s all Rettig needed someone (finally!) to say, and on Monday July 13th , Rettig publicly committed to BC, and now, understandably so.

Enter the curious figure of Nick Lamaison, the JUCO QB who also played in California, and like JS and Rettig – lived only 25 miles from USC’s campus. Many have long known that Lamaison was somehow going to be in the mix as a possible solution to Tennessee’s lack of depth at the QB position. In fact, outside of Urban Meyer’s fragile and infantile psyche, and Jimmy Hyam’s complete inability to accurately predict the very existence of gravity, it’s been one of the worst-kept secrets on the VN message board. Lamaison was told that Tennessee was seeking to sign two QB’s in this class, and that he could expect an invitation (he couldn’t “sign” as in NSD) to attend Tennessee should they fail to secure both JS and Rettig. Not only was Lamaison aware of this, but so were his coaches and those others in the Athletic Department at Mt. San Antonio Community College. Upon hearing of Rettig’s public commitment to BC on July 13th, the school acted on the information previously relayed, and posted Lamaison’s invitation to Tennessee on their school’s website on July 16th – but without first verifying that they could do so by checking in with either Lamaison or CLK. Had they inquired from either of the two beforehand, they would have been asked not to do so, as signing a JUCO QB can cause unintended consequences with other QB’s whom you’re recruiting, and especially when you’re touting “early playing time” to one or more of them. As you’d expect, UT denied the invitation, Lamaison had no comment and the school removed the announcement from their site.

After today’s ESPN announcement, and perhaps after calling a few more people whom we are not entirely out of the race to land (though they’ve publicly stated being committed elsewhere, at least publicly) expect to see the announcement to quickly resume its prominent placement on the school’s site in the next week or so……unless a previously targeted but verbally committed player expresses some renewed interest in taking a look at us. It’s still early, and bears gentle reminding that no one – Read: No. One. – comes off this staffs board. And most certainly, won’t in mid-July. However, after JS commits later today, I don’t think that our problem will be recruits coming off of the board, but rather, leaping onto it.

Like many of you, I’ve often wondered what Urban Meyer’s face looked like on NSD when Tennessee beat him for Nukeese and Marsalis. Can you imagine the look of disgust and betrayal that must have come across it, of course, before being partially veiled behind the washed out eyeliner which his tears caused to flow?

Well, we all may just get the chance to see it, after all. It’s something to consider.

Go. Big. Orange.

And so, the saga continues...

well-written Tenacious!

You must be a novelist in your real (not VN) life. If not, you are missing your calling, my friend.

so in the business of news, getting the dirty and reporting it first wins, right? so, how come i can't find that commitment out anywhere else? are our sports guys in k-town more "on it" than any other media outlet in the nation?? if so, i'd like to know who killed jfk

other than the fact that it will hurt our recruiting for a few months on the offensive side of the ball. why is everyone so torn up about him picking USC. We all know this years Qb class is shallow. And most every one thinks that if he went to USC that he would get recruited over next year right? Well if he came here and wasnt as good as thought dont you think we would just recruit over him next year also?
