imo it would be best if Simms turns out to be serviceable, Stephens stays, and Bray redshirts. A redshirt year would be huge for Bray I think...
I haven't seen enough of Simms to form a decent opinion, one way or the other, but based on the fact that this staff has their coaches tape footage of the games/practices they evaluate, and bring it back for the other coaches to weigh in...we should know which way they are leaning maybe as soon as this week.

Anyone who thinks this kid can start from day one is miserably mistaken. While Bray im sure has upside he is lightyears away from competing in the SEC. He does not move very well which will lead to sacks with our line next year. And he does not make very quick decisions...= picks in the SEC. The competion he plays against is that of a middle school level

Pretty strong words...as an EE, we'll have a chance to see in just a few months time. But I think Newton is the best chance we have at a successful season next year, odds-wise.

Not sure I agree with this. After looking at his films, I think his movement in the pocket and speed is underrated at this point. Also, his release looks pretty quick and he can zip the ball into tight spots. If he has a good spring and puts some weight on, he could be SEC ready for 2010.

thinking QBs with good arms can avoid sacks better than those with good wheels. The list of them is long.

QBs with good wheels default to them too easily.

While I still think his foot speed is better than advertised, this is exactly where I was coming from. Peyton Manning and Erik Ainge are prime examples.

Bray has outstanding pocket presence, something that can not be taught. I would love to see the stat line and see how many times he has ever been sacked. His highlights show he feels the pressure in plenty of time when it does happen and he may not be fast but he makes the smart moves and avoids it and is able to make extremely good throws while moving and across his body. His footwork is very good and will only get better and the staff if they choose to put him in will make sure and protect him. They wont send him out there and expect him to make 5 reads every play or force him into situations he cant handle.

I do think a RS will do him lots of good, but also think he would be just as good starting because honestly, he doesnt have anyone here now who he could learn from that could make him any better. RS years are usually the most beneficial when there is a proven QB in the system already and can teach them. If we are going to have growing pains we might as well let him get his feet wet as a freshman. The OL might not be great next season but who would have thought it would be THIS good now with the Sullins brothers in the middle? Another 9 months of work on the guys we have now and hopefully some studs coming in EE this line will be solid and he will have unreal talent all around him and especially at RB.

I still think we will bring in Simms or Newton (should start), and ginger will transfer. Bray v. Top guy in '11 should be fun to watch.

If Stephens has transferred by now, he's not likely to. If he transferred to a D1 school he'd have to sit a year with 1 year to play, if D2 he could play right away but with only 1 year. He's better off competing for a spot here. He would have a whole year head start on everyone but Lamaison.

That is true. However, if the staff had any confidence in him at all he would already have been playing. That is why we offered Simms and he will most likely be playing for a starting spot over the next two years with Bray.

Stephens will be sitting at third on the depth chart by the end of spring. He will see the writing on the wall.

He may or may not be ready for the SEC next year, but to say he's playing against middle school talent is completely false. He moves well in the pocket, it's outside the pocket when he doesn't move as well. He also makes really fast decisions. He also runs the 2 minute offense with complete control. It is amazing to see someone his age be so aware of clock management. You may not be able to get the whole story from the you tube highlights. One of his best plays last week was one where he threw the ball away. That doesn't make the highlights.
Also, the QB Camps were against the "Very Best" HS talent. He did extremely well against that talent.
If you expect your QB to run 40 yd sprints, then he's not your QB.
If you expect your QB to put fear into opposing secondaries, then He's your QB.

I think I'd rather have Bray start as a true freshman than Simms. I don't think Simms brings anything more to the table than Bray...just decent insurance in case Bray can't handle it as a freshman.

But Newton...I think you can plug him in and have an outstanding offense from the first game on.

Does Bray make the roster for the Army All American game?

UA game has Scroggins, Bell, Montana, Rettig, Gardner, and Simms...

Currently the Army roster doesn't include any qb's for the west team... Heaps will make it... so there will be two spots left on the west roster...

He's slated to be an EE...so, if the game is on Jan.9, Bray should already be enrolled at UT.
I don't know how that will work...I thought Rettig and Scroggins were going to be EE's as well.

Barring an unforeseen flip by Bell or Scroggins or a JUCO stud that's much too smart to have been a JUCO.... Stephens will be the '10 starter.

As mentioned before, he'll have a significant head start in the system and more polished skills than anyone I know of on UT's radar.

If you have insight that I don't then please post it... but Stephens has a big time arm, good accuracy, and an experience advantage. It would take a 5* sure thing like Pryor to beat that... and Rivals hasn't awarded 5* to a prostyle HS QB this year.

I read this yesterday, and sorry if this has been already posted but "x" says that Tyler is our highest rated QB. Even over Scroggins. Put that in your pipe and smoke it scroggin fans:D

If he had all that he'd have started this year.
