'10 CA QB Tyler Bray (Commit/On Campus)

Barring an unforeseen flip by Bell or Scroggins or a JUCO stud that's much too smart to have been a JUCO.... Stephens will be the '10 starter.

As mentioned before, he'll have a significant head start in the system and more polished skills than anyone I know of on UT's radar.

If you have insight that I don't then please post it... but Stephens has a big time arm, good accuracy, and an experience advantage. It would take a 5* sure thing like Pryor to beat that... and Rivals hasn't awarded 5* to a prostyle HS QB this year.

The coaches don't think much of Stephens at all from all reports.

It's much more about practice habits and work ethic then ability. If he gets it together and works for it, he will get a shot at the job. He gave up this year and resigned himself to being the backup.

If he had all that he'd have started this year.
I'm starting to think that for different reasons, CLK stayed loyal to Crompton, and that Stephens may not be nearly as bad as so many ASSUME.

It could be that they are neck and neck, but CLK just believes it's only right and fair to give the Senior (guy who has shown the most patience in waiting for his turn to play) his last shot. Can't really blame them. I know he believes in playing the best player, but when the competition is that close, common sense gives the nod to the senior.

Crompton may also be showing less tendencies in practice to turning the ball over (forcing the ball into coverage). That in itself is plenty of reason, and yet it doesn't mean Stephens sucks. It likely just means that he has an edge and CLK thinks it's better to let JC struggle to get his legs under him, than to yank him out while he does struggle. It's the fans who make all kinds of assumptions to Stephens worth. We just don't know yet. Not until he has a chance to get in the game and get some meaningful time, will we really know.

Another reason, I think we should remember is that JC was recruited by CLK when he was at USC. He evaluated him then, and must see something in JC he likes and feels he can bring out....IF he can get JC to calm down and let the game come to him. If Crompton can play nearly as poised this Sat. as he was against the Dogs, I'm going to be really impressed with Kiffin, Chaney, and Reaves.

Ok...so, now Coach Kiffin's a serial liar? How do you do, Mr Davis? I didn't know you take time from your coaching duties...I mean ownership duties with the Raiders to come and kick it with the folks at VolNation. :)

Have you seen the episode of "The Office" where the angrier Michael gets the more he resorts back to middle school and then elementary school insults? If not, you should. Seriously.

I was talking with my friend tonight about the QB sitch and what he thought the staff was interested in. His take was that, and please don't mark this as gospel it's only his opinion based on conversation with the coaches, if we don't see an offer come down for Simms or Newton in the next 10 to 14 days than we are much more involved with Scroggins than we are letting on.

He still continues to stick by his statement that these two are backup plans for the staff. Not that they aren't a B to B+ backup plan, but Kiffin wants Scroggins. I have seen with my own eyes the rankings they have the QBs in, as of 3 weeks ago, and know it was Bray 1 and Scroggins 2 (It stands to reason that Bray was 1 b/c he is a committed QB).

My own original thought... I think Kiff wants Scroggins but, even if all things were equal with he and Simms, he wants to stick it to Southern Cal in a bad way. Not only would it strategically be a great pipeline to get flowing but it would just feel good to steal from his old boss. I think he would view it as one of his "I'm no protege anymore... I'm a god dang force to be reckoned with!" moments. Just my thoughts...

Edit: Because I know it will be asked, yes I did inquire about the potential Memphis visit and was told that as of now it seems to be 50/50 and the Scroggins understand our situation with QB and know they need to "open back up" or tell us to move on.

From TOS.... Interesting to me

Yes this is interesting. I am kinda 50/50 on whether I even want Scroggins or not now. I read in a thread that he had said some disrespectful things about the coaching staff.

That guy is not a reliable poster at all. He's just trying to back track on his "bs rumor" about Scroggins wanting to visit for Memphis that he started spreading weeks ago. Brent flat out called him out on it and said Scroggins had no plans whatsoever to visit for the Memphis or any other game and the staff and him are rarely in touch. Scroggins only talks a little bit to a few UT commits and that is it.

I thought it was funny...not insulting. Oh well.

Switching gears back on topic...I got to see the game between Lakewood (Scroggins) and Long Beach Poly on TV. Scroggins is a gamer, and he has a good arm for sure...but I think his choice to commit to USC really did us a favor, as luck would have it. It looked like we had struck out on a top prospect, when Bray really started to come on in the camps. As a passer, I think CLK, Chaney and Reaves will favor Bray. He just has all the tools you want for a pocket passer, IMHO. We won't know how he handles the mental part of the game and how quickly he can pick up the system til well into Spring practice and fall camp.

But even if this staff pulled in Scroggins, I still think Bray is the man.

Glad to see hes up to 203. and you can bet Ausmus will add a few to that when he gets here. I hope this ends all the weight crap people have been crying about.

More of the same. 19-23 for 240 and 2 TD's with zero picks when I left in the 3rd quarter. Very accurate, quick release and good zip. His team was up big and he was just handing the ball off for most of the second half. The numbers are not exciting but it is fun to watch how easy everything looks. I am glad he is enrolling early.

Poster on VQ...

Bray is consistent this year. His numbers would be a lot better, but his team is blowing out the competition. He plays just a few quarters and is often limited in his attempts after the team gets a big lead. His numbers are FAR superior to Barkley's last year.

I am very excited to have Tyler committed to this great university. It was absolute luck how he "fell in our lap". "X" said that the staff likes him over scroggins, and I can see why from seeing many clips of his games, that he definently looks the part, and in 2 years he will have more weapons that almost any QB @ Tennessee since I have been watching games. GO VOLS.... ROLL THE TIDE :machgun: bama

Bray should fit in nicely with Kiffins offense. Really looking forward to him getting on campus. All of the articles/interviews on him shows he is a winner.
