'10 FL DE Richard Ash

A lot of rumors about Florida taking Richard Ash off their board. A lot has been made out of him not showing up to UF’s camp in shape. Will Richard Ash attend FNL and what’s your opinion on this situation?

Ash has said time and time again that Florida is his top school. He even told me earlier this summer that he’s planning to commit to Florida but wants to take his visits along the way so that he can be “wined and dined.” But recently, Ash had a change of heart, naming USC as his new leader. We haven’t been in contact much over the last week, but I can’t say I’m surprised by this. USC offered, and Hollywood is a very attractive home for college athletes. However, I did talk to someone who recently spoke to Ash, and he said Ash’s workout at Florida’s camp might not have been to the coaches’ liking.

I watched Ash at Florida’s camp a couple weeks back and yes, he didn’t look as in shape, but it’s also the summertime and spring football has been over with for a while. He looked a little slow and tired, but displayed a frame that probably builds a lot of muscle fast. Not everyone was in the best shape and that’s to be expected in June. Things change when kids start going to more camps as the month progresses and July comes around. Speaking of July, Ash was supposed to work out at Friday Night Lights, and when I spoke to him last that was the plan. I haven’t heard anything different, but anything could happen between now and late July.

As far as how Florida might be taking to Ash, I still think Florida’s staff is looking at him, but if he didn’t measure up at camp, he might have fallen a little on the big board. Defensive line coach Dan McCarney was pushing him harder than the other prospects out on the field, which is a sign that he’s looking to see more out of him than prospects who might not be as high on the board. McCarney was especially looking to tweak his technique a little. He and Ronald Powell were McCarney’s focus for the afternoon that I observed. But if Ash doesn’t feel as though he performed well enough for the coaches, then he probably didn’t.

Another USC/UT battle......

Has Florida soured on Pahokee (Fla.) High defensive tackle Richard Ash? Ash hasn't been able to get in touch with Gators coaches of late and is being recruited harder by USC, LSU and others. At one point, the Gators were on top of Ash's list.

- Mike Farrell...

Whether the Gators have soured on him is unknown to Ash, who said Sunday he's tried to call the coaching staff in recent days without any success.

"I've been hearing things that Florida doesn't want me after I tested at camp because of my 40 and my vertical," Ash said.

"I did good in the one-on-ones but I guess the 40 and vertical lowered me on Florida's scale. … They didn't like me as much after camp. That's what I've been hearing."

Ash, a 6-foot-4, 263-pound recruit who's rated No. 18 at defensive tackle by Rivals.com, said he's not sure if the rumors are even true.

If the Gators are still interested, the Pahokee standout said they're still one of his favorite teams. But because he had been hearing negative things, Florida is no longer No. 1.

"It moved them out of my top now," Ash said.

USC, LSU and WVU are left. Teams are dropping like flies on this kid and I have no clue why.

Tennessee and Florida have dropped off. Once USC "forgets" to send his official offer it'll be down to LSU and WVU. Don't be surprised to see both pull off him either. I know he's had soe bad camps but my goodness at his fall from grace.

Our D Line coach worked him at camp:

WVU- the ultimate fall back school. They seem to take all the recruits that he top schools cool on for some reason.

I would take a wild guess and say admission standards play a role in that. But I could be dead wrong. I just think there's no way a guy like Noel Devine passed on all those schools because he really liked WVU the best. I seem to recall him having like a -3 on his ACT.
