'10 GA QB Hutson Mason

Mason threw 8 TDs in a win tonight over South Gwinnett. Yea, that's right 8 TDs. He tied the GA state record for TD passes in a game. That is crazy. Dude is seriously rewriting the GA record books...

I will say this...although he does play in a weak region, if he was to win the AAAAA state title, he'll have earned it. Weak region competition can get you to the playoffs, but in the end, you still have to beat the other regions to earn that title.

Looks like a smart kid that has the ability to pick defenses apart. Daryl Dickey fulfilled the same roll for us in 1985. He did not have the physical talent, but was football smart.

If I were Vandy or Kentucky I would be all over this kid. Kentucky took a kid out of Georgia by the name of Moe Williams that no one else wanted and he ended up in the league.

If vols are to stupid not to take Cam "The Man" Newton, I would love to have Mason as competition to Bray and Stephens.

Uh, quite a bit actually in the previous pages of this thread...

What? Because I didn't pump sunshine up his butt?? I told the truth and that was it. He doesn't have a big enough arm to play at the level of a UT. He will get an offer to play somewhere, but not at this level. That's not bashing, it's just the simple truth.

2 posts on Mason in the last 5 months and neither were bashing the guy.

People perceive things differently to you it was the truth to him it was bashing. Others may think the same thing. The kid is a pretty good HS QB and I am sure he will make a great QB at the next level somewhere. Will it be for UT only the coaches can make that decision to offer him

Simply not true. If that were the case we would have canvassed the QB situation with offers. We didn't. We were selective with our offers. The plan all along, ever since Kiffin turned down Boyd, was to atrract a big-name guy. Guys like Rettig and Rees don't attract high profile recruits.
I would be shocked. There are much better QBs than Mason out there right now that we haven't offered. We are simply keeping in touch with him in case he makes some improbable improvement this fall.

Munchie Legaux had good stats too last year.

Have you seen his film? His offer list is a veritable who's who among crappy teams.

You act like we should offer every kid that plays against that level of competition. Come on Eric, surely you can admit if we are competing with recruits with Georgia Southern something is wrong. When you can look at a kid's film and the talent matches up with his offer list that's pretty clear cut. I don't know why you would want a guy like Mason so much anyway. We are Ten-uh-see. We should be attracting top talent. If we get to a point where we have to offer guys like Mason that's absolutely embarrassing. Those amazing stats that you mention came against the best competition in Georgia weren't good enough for any other SEC school to offer so why should we be any different?

I don't know why you think that nothing can be procured from his film regarding his talent. How do you think coaches evaluate prospects? Why would you throw out video evidence? I guess to make your point. It's not an accurate one though. If this kid ends up being one of the QBs we offer a scholarship to then we are in serious trouble.

Why would you want us to offer a guy that will never be able to contribute here? Save the scholly for next year if it gets that bad.

And you seem to have a hard-on for him when he hasn't done anything to deserve anything more than a look from us. That makes much less sense IMO.

This guy has zero offers of significance. I can't believe you called Iowa a Big-10 powerhouse when we spoke earlier. They are one year removed from 6-6, two years removed from 6-7 and have ranked 63rd, 53rd, 28th and 40th the last 4 years in recruiting. That is not an impressive offer.

There is a reason that we are halfway through the recruiting year and Hutson Mason has no offers to play football at any top tier school. If we want to get to the top, we need to recruit the best. This kid is not it.

There is no evidence that he can even be that guy so the concept is irrelevant. You can't tell from his film if he is a good game manager who makes smart decisions.
There's no question that Iowa is his best offer, but to act like Iowa is some "Big-10 powerhouse" (your words - not mine) is ridiculous. To show the significance of that offer, go look at their past few classes. It's all 3* and 2* guys. There are a few 4* there but not many at all. It's not like they are recruiting the best guys in the nation and Mason fits that bill. They basically take what they can get.
It is certainly an indicator that he sucks. It's not like he's gone out there and proven it in camp like Rees and Rettig have. It's not like he's just not been a priority for us and other schools have offered such as it was with Andrew Hendrix for example, no one has offered and he went to camp at Georgia, NC St, North Carolina, Iowa, and ECU. He already had an Iowa offer, but has failed to earn an offer at any other school that he camped at. If that doesn't tell you something, then I can't help you.

here are a few quotes from you downing this kid pretty hard. by the way... you post on message boards, not evaluate talent for college football programs.. remember that

I have been watching this thread for some time now. I have read all the cut downs, name calling, and for the most part uninformed opinions on Hutson. I unlike most all of you have seen Huton play. And I will say more than once (ok now you can call me a homer). But I have seen what he really does week after week after week. And I am here to tell you that weather Tennessee wants him or not does not take away from his talent. He has done what a good quarterback does. He has set every record in georgia and taken his so called weak team into the third round of the playoffs undefeated. Along the way he has not only proven that he is more than capible of taking his team under his wing and beating teams that you originally felt were good. If you need examples look at south Gwinnett. There only loss was to Grayson (#1 in state and nationally ranked). Not only did he beat them he embarrassed them. Oh yea and in that game he broke his own sate record with 553 yards and 8 td passes and was pulled after 3rd quarter after breaking the state season touch down record with 56 and counting. Give the kid his due or atleast get informed before you cut him down with nothing to back it up.

After reading some of Sab's old posts, looks like I was right about Iowa. They are ranked 11th in the BCS standings and 13th in the AP.

I have seen him play last year and this year, twice. I am giving him his due as a VERY good high school qb.
Now, lets get to the bottom line. Coach Lindsey has brought the spread offense to GA and no team has ever run it here before. Therefore, no teams have ever defended it before. GA has always been a running game state. Hutson is the product of this system that no HS DC knows how to stop.
Hutson is a fine young man and a good leader from what I have observed during the games I have seen. I also have a good friend that has a son on the team. He says the same about Hutson.
Colleges see the system that Lassiter runs. Colleges see the short throws that are the largest part of this offense. Colleges see that when Hutson throws the ball over 20 yards down field, the ball is very wobbly which means that he is struggling to throw the longer passes.
Colleges know that he is a "project" and are waiting to see who else they can sign off of their boards. SEC teams that offer him will be "settling" for him to fill a qb slot. Not one of them are "actively" pursuing him. It is a "wait and see" game with Hutson right now. A state championship will more than likely get him better offers. Just not from the schools that he, and the Lassiter faithful, want those offers to come from.

Hutson will get a shot with someone and I wish him the best.
