If you think about it...his falling away seems to coincide with the way Kippy Brown (who would've been his position coach) was dealt with. You can believe Kippy gave him an earful before leaving...but the problem is, as much as I wanted Kippy here...he was totally full of crap if he thought he was the best candidate out there for the HC'ing job here. The only reason Hamilton made him interim HC, was because putting that in the hands of someone else on staff was too volatile. They were suspect to leave at any time. It wasn't because Hamilton thought Kippy was HC'ing material.
It almost pi$$es me off to think Kippy can be that naive to think Memphis is going to pass him over for HC, then TSU...and then with him being unemployed for the last season, that he's going to ride in on a white horse and save the day? Come on, Kippy! If I were in your shoes, I'd have to know better. If he had been OC for any length of time, and was still in that role, then he'd have a better case to make in all those openings. It was just too much of a jump from position coach to HC at a school of this size. So for him to belly-ache over that...is absurd.
The thing that Kippy and Ambles should take away from this, is...that if Kippy had been part of teams that had been more successful, he'd be much further down the road. When you take jobs for losing teams, you're taking the gamble that it can seriously damage your stock as a coach. THAT is what is to blame here...not folks passing him over cause he's black, and giving him the shaft.
Hell...look at Cutcliffe. Do you need a better example? He took 2 dead end jobs now, because he was too desperate, instead being patient and waiting til a workable HC gig came open.
So, Markeith...if you're going through these boards, I hope you realize...this university did not do Kippy dirty. His wishes and expectations simply didn't match up with the University's at this point in time. Hamilton's gaffe here is that he should have leveled with Kippy and let him know candidly that his lack of experience at HC or OC would place him way down the list, and that at best he would be a fallback candidate if he were unsuccessful with those on his list. If he had more experience than a fleeting 1yr gig as an OC years ago, then he would be a much more viable candidate. As far as the race angle...let's be real about this. Hamilton went after Lovie Smith hard and he turned us down. Coach Sumlin at Houston was also approached. So, race had nothing to do in this hire...whatsoever, despite what some are claiming. It doesn't belong in the discussion at all.
If Lovie Smith said "Yes" then he's our HC right now...and most everyone here is elated about it...especially me.
