10 Most Overpaid College Coaches

Coach gets paid what the market will bear at the time he's negotiating. A job like Tennessee can afford to pay in the $3 mil range regardless. There are plenty that would argue we went on the cheap with Jones and that we should've paid "stupid money" for a "bigger name". His ~$3mil makes him what, the 10th highest paid SEC coach? Bret Bielema just went 3-9 at Arky and he makes more (and I don't care what he did in the Big 10, he sucked much more than Jones his first SEC season) Muschamp just went 4-8 and he makes more.

Btw, Butch doesn't make $3.2.... he makes $2.9

Where does Butch's salary rank in SEC?

You can't pay bottom half of the league salary to turn this mess around.

I'd say his salary is about right based on Tennessee expectations to return to top of the conference.

This "article" was written without much research beyond salary vs record.

It would be similar to an article stating top ten places to not take a road trip. Then placing Cali on the list because of gas prices...

We can pay a coach 2.9 (what they are calling 3.2) and get a coach that has shown a record of success and steady improvement everywhere he has gone, or pay 2.2 and get Mark Stoops. Tell me again how we over paid...

I agree but hopefully he is paid on potential but if he stinks it up this year I will have my doubt's.

He has to get us to a bowl to make up for the vandy n fla loss.

3.2 mill. for UT is average money in this day and age for a SEC school. Great coaches who have great success, especially in the SEC, are going for 5 mill+. To rank Butch number one on this list is both maniacal and comical. When the bar has been raised all around you by your competition then your bar as well must be raised to keep up. Thus, the average salary for an average coach in terms of W and L is therefore going to be higher. You refuse to move that bar, in other words not pay the raise caused directly from your competition, then you are going to be left hiring coaches who fall below that average bar line.

When we become like the "U" used to be and all of the major recruits are knowing on the door to be offered a scholarship to Tennessee, then bUTch will earn the money.

He may be overpaid now, but he will soon be underpaid when he starts winning and winning big.

Watch all of the closet Tennessee fans come out once we start winning again. Even the transplants from New York, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Pennsylvania will start wearing U.T. gear.......

Senseless Article...Kind of Laughing at it.

Really Baseless except for records. Over paid coaches don't pull in Top 5 recruiting classes nor are they the 10th ranked Salary of the league....

Several coaches on this list could easily be at the top of the list. If you keep CBJ on this list I would think he would be 7-9 on it and not #1.

Writer not only wasted his time but the reader's time producing this article...just his opinion.

This article was written as off-season fodder to get fan bases all up in a tizzy, and it looks to be successful so far. Nothing to see here.

Gas in Hawaii was 4.50-4.89 range. Would have to make 2.9 mil to live full time there when add in price of food. Just some FYI for the board.

You must not only consider what a coach produces in a job. You must also consider the damage a job may potentially do to a coach. TN has been a growing disaster since Phil retired on the job in 2000. The last 5 years can only be compared to the Titanic. Whoever took this job (even if it was Saban) was guaranteed to be a loser for the 1st two years. If the fans lose patience with Butch before he rights the ship, his hopes of ever coaching again at the major college level are probably dead. I think Watson Brown was one of the most promising young coaches in the country; then he committed career suicide by taking the Vandy job. Butch should be compensated for putting his entire future on the line.

You hardly ever find a "slide show" article that's worth a damn. Mostly, they are just trying to rile people in an attempt to get page hits.

Coaching salaries should be looked at as compared to the rest in the conference, and also as a bar of expectations that is there.

According to Saturday Down South, the only coaches paid less than Butch are Gary Pinkel (who I'm sure I got a raise after their season), Dan Mullen, and Mark Stoops.

You could make a case that all of the coaches above Butch Jones (except maybe Muschamp) have earned it.

Butch has laid a good foundation in his first year, and got a pass for a 5-7 record. And landing a Top 5 recruiting class, and doing excellent PR is helping his cause.

I don't think he's overpaid. I think we paid what we needed to to get a decent coach to risk his career here at Tennessee, in the middle of the hardest stretch in history.

Plus, he beat a ranked opponent his first year. That was a dry spell that needed to be broken.

Don't think he's overpaid, but he definitely needs to show an improvement in the W-L column to get a raise.

This...

ANY coach that came to UT was risking his career at the time.. You have to pay in order to make someone take that risk..

This time it looks like it may have worked out in our favor.. I have not been as comfortable with our HC as I am having CBJ at the helm since we were "workin like heck". JMHO

Garbage click-bait article. Poorly written, poorly researched.

Oh yeah...how much does Bret Bielema make?

Because he's #1.
