'10 PREP OL Morgan Moses

Hasn't Hood mainly been working at guard? I really haven't heard much about him at all.

And yeah, we have better than Pope, but if we have McNeil back at Center, I don't see anyone really starting over him at guard unless it's a Morgan Moses type.

Really I think the only set spots on the line for next year are
LT: Douglas
LG: Shaw
C: McNeil (If he comes back. Otherwise its probably wide open with an edge to Pope)
RG: Wide open unless we get a Moses type
RT: Probably Dallas Thomas's to lose unless we get some other JuCo transfer
Why would McNeil be back? He's having career-ending surgery on his knee.

I don't know where Hood has been practicing.

Well, Brimfield is like Douglas... except has even more work to do this off-season to be able to contribute on the OL. He was moved from DT. Douglas is already showing promise. Brimfield will take some more time but I think during the offseason (today on sportstalk, Kiffin said Brimfield is one of the stronger OL and really good in run blocking, needs pass protection work x 2) he will make a huge jump.

Again, this is my opinion and speculation...

I also think Gerald Jones will never be a good WR. When I say "good" I mean 1,000 yard receiver or the go-to guy. Next year we will depend alot on freshmen WRs and rising sophs. He's more of a start/stop runner (screens, wildcat, etc) and I just don't think he's a good route runner or long strider.

I could be wrong. I hope I am (about Jones). I hope Brimfield is what I think he can be next year.

Brimfield is nothing like Douglas. He's fat and lazy.

Shaw and Douglas will anchor the left side of the line next year. That much is clear. The battles will be for C, RG, and RT...

Hubbs said today that the staff likes both Schofield and Thomas at RT, but he believes Schofield will win the job. I guess Brimfield takes the RG job by default, but if he don't get motivated and in shape, he will not be a starter...

Gerald Jones main liability is the guys we have slinging the ball. Kiffin raved about him in the Spring, and even after he had injured his wrist.

I'm thinking its possible that he gets a 6th year for an injury redshirt. IIRC they said he was running and doing some work with the team a few weeks ago, so I don't think its career ending like they seemed to think at the beginning.

He hasn't had the surgery yet. He is trying to push through it to play his senior year. He will have the surgery in the off season and it is career ending.

He would be useless next year anyways, I appreciate what Josh did for UT, but he just is taking up a scholarship if he stays around next year.

When I said he was "like Douglas" I didn't mean potential or talent..... or work ethic and muscle mass....

I just meant, he's trying to learn a new position for the most part having come over from D.... and even though, correct me if I'm wrong, the old staff had already begun working him at OL a little last season, he is having to learn a new OL scheme and... as you pointed out... isn't where he needs to be size-wise. Douglas needed to add weight. Brimfield needs to pull a Chris Scott and shed a few.

I think we actually agree on something LV. Except for Shaw of course. I just think he'll get beat out for that LG spot by a newcomer. But I'm not gonna beat a dead horse on that one... you may very well end up being right. That is just what I think will happen.

I do agree on Brimfield getting the start by default, unless, again we get someone like Robinson that can come in and start at guard. If we get Robinson and can somehow pull Moses away from UVA, I don't see how both of those guys don't start next year... one of them will take Shaws job.

If that happens, maybe Shaw could move back to T and send Douglas to the other side.

I could handle this OL, whaddaya think LV:

LT Shaw
LG Moses
C Pope or Jose
RG Robinson
RT Douglas

That sounds like a nice step in the right direction, with players like James, Stone, and maybe a Leifheit or Cullen backing those guys up.

2011 is a huge year to add depth to the OL.

I see where you are coming from, but they really can't be prepared. Brimfield has been on the o-line since his RS freshman year and still hasn't put it together. Douglas has done everything you could ask for and is starting his first year after moving to a new position.

This is a refreshing tone from you. Welcome to the conversation.

You think we finish with 5?

I would be happy with Moses, Robinson, James and Cullen. I also would be super pumped if we got Stone also, but if we had the 4 above I would guess he goes to Vandy or Bama. I think Leifheit would be at UNC in that scenario also. Aside from Moses I think Cullen may be most ready to play in the SEC of the people you mentioned.

Also I would like to hear some discussion of the fact that the blocking scheme run by Cregg and Kiffin does not take a rocket scientist. Kids were confused last year in the clawfense and it was obvious. This year guys are just pulling up and blasting the guy in front of them. It is a little more complicated, but not much.

If ever there was a system where a freshman could do well, it is a system where your assignment is simple as can be and you are zone blocking on run plays. Physically I know you are saying there is a problem, but I would be shocked if JaWuan and Damien could not do better than our stalwarts the Sullin brothers right now in a weight room.

Brimfield reminds me of Toby Champion

I could see that maybe. I think Robinson is going to be a mean tackle somewhere though...

Pope may end up starting at guard next year if Revis shows some huge improvement or McNeil gets a 6th year over Brimfield though.

I think Shaw is pretty much locked into that starting LG spot though.

Pope will never play any meaningful snaps.

We'll have to break it down once we actually sign this class. Alot of guys we're looking at could play either G or T on the OL, except Pair is a T all the way and J. Jose couldn't play T if his life depended on it... he's a road paver and will def play on the inside 3.

I think there's so good dialogue going on here about the OL. I also agree that Pope will probably never playing any meaningful snaps. Revis could be a Scott Wells, as I've heard others say, but I am not hopeful, to be honest. I am doubtful on Brimfield too. Which really just leaves Douglas, Shaw and Schofield. Douglas and Schofield I am very optomistic about!

With the recruits, who are the most likely to be able to start next season and do well? Would Cullen and Moses be at the top of the list b/c of being older and more experienced or b/c they're actually better in a general sense? Also, who of the high school seniors are our best bets (besides Hurst and Crisp, who seem like long shots at best) to play immediately and do relatively well? My guess would be Damien Robinson, followed by Juwaun James, but I would not really know. I am not very positive about Stone, to be honest. Is Leifhart better than his current ranking (not to be a star-gazer but...)?

Yeah, sometimes you gotta step back and realize how you're coming off to people. I'm really not like that, so I kinda wanted to come about it with more of an open ended discussion rather than pretending I'm always right about everything.

I know alot about the game of football and UT football, but noone knows it all. If I come off as a d-bag again, just let me know haha. I'll step back and look at it again.

:peace:

Cullen and Moses would probably start because they're older, and they're better in general.

For HS seniors who could play well (hopefully), its looking like Robinson and James might be able to do it. Stone probably needs a redshirt year, and Leifheit may play, but I dont think he'd do as well as Robinson/James right away.

Yeah its not everyday that you see a big 6 7 tackle that can run routes and be very athletic as douglas is my brother went to school and graduated with him douglas is gonna be a good Tackle IMHO.....

thanks bburger. appreciate your opinion. i share your sentiments based on what i've read and heard. looks like cullen, moses and robinson are at the top of our board for a very good reason. maybe we can still pull a hurst-sized surprise, too...

Hey, I'm just as guilty as the next guy about that. Appreciate the outlook.
