'10 TN LB Justin Maclin

Maclin might end up at Memphis. His dad James played at the Univ of Memphis around the same time as Porter.

i expected that...porter was only reason he even went to LSU

yep, i think it will come out in a week or two and probably be set up to be Porter's first commitment. Would not be surprised if Jonathan Brown joins him about the same time. Coincidentally, Brown's father (a ex teammate and close friend of Porter's) is Maclin's current HS coach..

BTW... The said relationship between Maclin's HS coach and Porter could be a large part of the reason that he never showed much interest in TN despite saying that TN was recruiting him the hardest. Coach Wilson has been one of the coaches recruiting with O in Memphis and apparently Porter and Wilson are not on the best of terms.

Thanks. good info!

Is this kid really stupid enough to go to Memphis? Just because of his connection with the head coach. He is a very highly rated player with offers from major programs. He most certainly has NFL aspirations. Could he be dumb enough of to go to Memphis?

I fail to see why he's stupid. So he might go to Memphis. Big deal. I don't know him. Maybe that's in his best interest. Not to mention he was never coming here.

Are you mad at him?

DeAngelo Williams is laughing at your post

The fact that you cited ONE name is all the evidence I need to back up post. You dont see how going to Memphis and playing for inferior coaches and against inferior opponents would hurt his chances of making the NFL? No I am not mad at him. Never have been. He never had any interest in UT and neither did tons of other kids. That does not have anything to do with a kid of this caliber choosing to go a crappy football school like Memphis.

if Fred Smith put as much into the football program as he did bball memphis would be interesting to watch with Porter potentially locking down Memphis and the talent that he can get there. Unfortunately until facilities improve it will be tough

Issac Bruce, Mike Mckenzie...

Here's the thing: Kids aren't stupid because they want to go to a particular school. Regardless of what you think, you can make it to the NFL through Memphis, just like you can through Eastern Illinois (Tony Romo), Delaware (Joe Flacco), Villanova (Brian westbrook), Troy (DeMarcus Ware), Southern Miss (Bret Favre)...

I know that's just a small list of players, and I'll concede you have a better chance of making it if you go to a bigger school. But I don't know this guy personally, I doubt you do either, so I don't feel the need to call him stupid for a decision I'm not a part of. But I'm sure you're just looking out for his best interests, right?

Realistically, for every negative a person can think of for not going somewhere, a coach, or pretty much anyone else for that matter, can think of a positive as to why they should. It's a constant cycle, and more importantly, it's not up to you or me to say if a person is dumb for choosing a school.

Seems like this is touching a nerve with you. Look, I am not calling the kid stupid. I am not 'attacking' the kid. The decision is what I am calling stupid. Its not a good idea to go to Memphis to play football if you have the options this kid has. He has major programs that can offer him way better opportunities for advancement in football than Memphis. What if my son wanted to become a mechanical engineer and he had a full ride to Vanderbilt but decided to go to Murray State instead. Would that not be a dumb decision? I look at this situation in a similar light.

Now, if the kid does not have interest in making a career out of football in the NFL then going to Memphis and staying home would be a perfectly legit decision. And maybe that is the case. I am not familiar with him or his situation.

Well I mean...

Regardless, my nerves are in pretty good shape. I'm not really doing anything at work. It's Thursday. I'm alright. Thanks. I hope you're doing ok, too.

If I purposely put my hand in a fire, am I dumb or was it just a "dumb decision?" I don't care if you attack or call the guy stupid--I don't know him. Plus, he lives in TN and doesn't plan on playing for UT, so maybe his intellect should be questioned....:peace2:

I just think that--and a lot of people seem have a problem with this on the board--when a guy wants to go somewhere, who's to say it's a good or bad decision? We just want all the top prospects to go to UT. If they don't then...whatever. And this really wasn't aimed at you, but just the idea in general that when kids go someplace they are definitely missing out on a certain aspect of something. Anywhere you go, someone is going to be convinced that "if you go to school X, you won't be doing activity Y." If going pro were what every kid wanted, I'd have a lot more success in NCAA 2010 recruiting.

If my son (I don't have one) got a full ride to Vandy, and wanted to go to Murray State, that's his decision. It can't be a stupid one if he were to apply himself, and enjoy what he's doing in the process. I assume you can still get a good paying job from Murray State. Which brings up a good point: What looks better, Cs from Vandy (playing at a big school), or A's from Murray State (playing at Memphis)? I'd think these kids know what they're doing. Most have played football a lot of their life.

But you said it yourself, you're not familiar with him or his situation.

Anyway...You get where I'm coming from. I'm kind of just beating a dead horse now.

Don't mean to butt in, but I think rick is referring only to the football situation and not taking anything else into consideration. This kid has offers from many better "football" schools and if you are strictly looking at it as him putting himself in the best football situation, then rick is right and it make no sense. But if you take all of the personal factors that may persuade him which we are not privy to, then we have no idea.

Again, it had nothing to do with him not going to UT. If he chooses to go to Memphis over LSU then I think that is a big risk on his part in terms of his future in football. If that is what is most important to him. I dont know if it is. Maybe its more important for him to stay 'home' and be close to his family. If that is the case then that is perfectly fine. I was speaking in reference to his football future.

Rivals now has Maclin listed as a DE although he is listed at only 215. It would take him at least 2 years to get on the field as a DE @ LSU. If he stayed at LB, then who knows.

If Porter can pull Maclin 4* and Brown 3* (both top 30 at their positions according to Rivals), he would with those two alone land a recruiting class in under two months higher than Tommy West has had in probably 5-6 years. He will go hard to keep the highly rated "11 DB that was trying to graduate in '10 instead and he will go hard after 3* RB Keith McBride and 4* Barry Brunetti. If he strikes out with Brunetti, he might also go after the QB from White Station who just won Mr. Football (first year playing QB and I hear that a lot of schools are now starting to call because they think he has a lot of upside).

My point is that, if he pulls everyone out of this group sans Brunetti, he will already begin to upgrade the talent level at Memphis. By no means are they going to be world beaters, but they can be legitimate contenders within their conference in 2-3 years.
