SPNU 150 Watch List tackle James Stone taking some visits

James Stone spoke with ESPN affiliate Web site CrimsonConfidential.com about the status of his recruitment.

Alabama, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Maryland, Notre Dame, Cal, North Carolina, Duke, LSU, Florida State, Syracuse, Auburn, Stanford and Louisville have all extended scholarship offers to Stone.

The 6-foot-5, 297-pound talent has already visited Alabama, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. He commented on the 'Bama and UT experiences, "They each took different approaches. Alabama's approach was more about showing me around a lot, like taking me to the academic building. Tennessee's approach was to provide more interaction with the coaches. They both had their high points."

The Maplewood junior also specifically mentioned that he'd like to make visits to both Georgia and Auburn.

Additionally, Stone mentioned one factor that could eliminate some programs, "Schools that are far away, like Syracuse, might not be in the mix, Distance might be a problem."

"Well, I've been getting letters from coach Chavis," Stone said. "I've tried to call him but I haven't been able to reach him. Matter of fact, I think I'm gonna try to call him during school tomorrow so maybe I can reach him.

"I like their program. I've talked to the offensive line coach a little bit and I like him. I like how he talks and how he thinks about things. I like his feel about the game. I'll probably take a visit down there sometime."

I really hope we get Stone, last great lineman we had from the metro area that I can remember was big John Henderson.

He is the biggest recruit in-state in my opinion...Smith looks like a great DE...but we need OL bad!

With the Texas Tech offer, Stone would have a chance to join his friend and teammate Romario Cathey, a Red Raider signee in the 2009 class.

"I'm interested in them because I've seen them play and I like how they play," Stone said. "Then Romario is over there so I know someone over there and that's good."

James Stone just made a visit to Auburn. New article up on Rivals...

Stone, a 6-foot-5, 297-pound offensive tackle, said he has 18 offers including Auburn's. He's visited Alabama, Vanderbilt and Tennessee and has offers from big-time schools all over the country such as Notre Dame, LSU and Georgia.

Stone said his visit was no better or worse than the other three he has made, but Auburn definitely helped itself.

"They really put themselves on my radar," Stone said.

Stone goes on to say that Auburn coaches were telling him how thin they are on the OL and that he would have a chance to play early. Hmmm, sounds like I've heard that one somewhere else...

Well either the staff didn't do a good job making UT stand out from the other schools or this kid is really hard to impress.

I think we have a really good shot at him. I can't see a big time recruit ending up at Vandy. I'm purty sure that on his visit to Alabama, Jacques Smith was in his ear the whole time telling him how much better Tennessee was than Bama. And I can't really see him choosing Auburn over his home state of Tennessee. Maybe Florida or Bama or Georgia, but not Auburn...

I would imagine he is playing it close to the vest. Recruits dont ever just come out and say that a visit "sucked". I think we should get him. He can play right away, in a pro style offense, and block for a RB who is (hopefully by that time) the most talented sophomore at his position in the country.

If we want to shut the borders down, Stone is a must get. I understand memphis players being hard to persuade, but this kid is only a couple hours from knoxville, gotta get him.
