'10 WA QB Jake Heaps

To me, this is one of the big story lines of this recruiting season. Tennessee must sign at least one big-time quarterback. The new staff did not sign one with their first class, so this has to be the top priority in Knoxville.

So what's the Tennessee quarterback board look like? At this point, it appears the Vols will head West. Jake Heaps, from Sammamish (Wash.) Skyline, and Jesse Scroggins, from Lakewood (Calif.) High, appear to be atop their list. Chances are Heaps stays closer to home, and the Vols have a better shot with Scroggins. He may live in California, but he has lots of family in Nashville and Memphis. He has an offer from the Vols and hopes to visit Knoxville in July.

Others to keep an eye on include Austin Hinder of Steamboat Springs (Colo.) High, Andrew Hendrix of Cincinnati Moeller, Tommy Rees of Lake Forest (Ill.) High and Joseph Brennan of Cherry Hill (N.J.) Camden Catholic. Hendrix was offered a scholarship by Tennessee earlier today.

Despite the glaring need at this position, the Vols haven't gone hog wild and offered every quarterback with a pulse. I think you will see quarterback coach David Reaves, offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and the other Tennessee assistants make their May recruiting rounds, then try to get some of these kids into camp this summer.

I think the situation for him to come in have a good chance to start as a freshman for a program that has traditionally been in the SECC mix is going to be too much to overlook. The thing that's going to be looming in his mind is that, for the past few years, the team that wins the SEC, wins the NC!
Washington is just too irrelevant nationally and could severely damage any chance he has at playing in the NFL.

The wild card is him being a Mormon, and whether him going to a Mormon school trumps his career goals remains to be seen. I'd be happy with Scroggins and Hendrix, and even Montana (kid's got wheels as well as pedigree)

they have crossed Montana off the list..

they will not wait for Scroggins to visit to get a QB committed, a # 1 QB committed.. he best move of visit date or he will be left out
Newburg said Scroggins would'n't visit til July....but the kid said in a Scout interview that he was planning on attending our camp in June

When did that happen? I thought maybe they were waiting to get out there to CA and evaluate him in person or get him to camp

they saw him last week and he was going to have to blow them away to get an offer.. if they go back at him later it will be due to losing out on otehr targets..

I love that this coaching staff only gives out offers to players they actually think fit their system and who will come in and compete for playing time right away.

Don't just offer everyone and hope it works out. Montana has picked up a ton of offers and I am glad we didn't jump on the band wagon.

I really hope we land Heapshe would be a big jump start for the offensive recruits to start committing to the vols

I do think he is planning to get here in June but that may be too late.. we need to get a QB on board soon...

If June maybe too late for Scroggins then I would think the only other #1 QB would be for Heaps to commit unless coach O persuades Sims to come on board but I think Sims is doubtful.

Good point. The only other big time QB making a decision before then is Heaps. Unless LWS is talking about taking Hendrix as a #1 QB. But would Scroggins still come even if we already had Hendrix?

Dont forget the newton kid. I think we are very much in the running for the juco qb. If we are putting all our bets on heaps, then newton would viable option to go along with hendrix if heaps decides to go else where

IMO I don't think Hendrix is our #1 QB as of right now and I don't think he will commit until after Heaps or Scroggins does. I am also not on the staff so I could be totally wrong but like I said it's just my opinion. LOL
