104.5 this morning: Jalen Hurd

Jalen has a unique body type in that he has a strong mature lower body and his upper body has not caught up to his lower. It will be interesting to watch him after a year in the strength and conditioning program. Best thing about Jalen is that he is a baller and will be an asset at what ever position he plays.

BTW: He is going to play defense on (safety) this year in high school. Just hope he doesn't get hurt!

True or not its a pretty flattering comment when he alludes to the idea that he may actually be a great player at multiple positions in college if it happened that way. I didn't see it as a slight at all toward his ability as an RB one bit.

Let an NFL scout measure him instead of these ridiculous HS height/weight/speeds. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he was actually 6'1, 220 lb, which is ideal for a RB.

Listening to the zone on way to golf this morning the high school football show was talking about local Nashville teams. Jalen Hurd was talked
about in depth. They were talking about how he will most likely play defense at UT. I thought UT recruited him to play RB. Supposedly he is 6'4" about 235-240. They said he will be a better cornerback than RB in college. Anyone close to him or any locals know more about this? If UT will move him to defense, what will they do about the desperate need at RB?

I heard it. It was Tate Matthews talking to Murphy Fair, who is considered the high school football guru in Middle Tennessee and throughout the state. They talked about him playing free safety this year in high school and Fair said a coach he spoke to said he "may be a better safety right now than a running back". Fair then talked about his size, that while at camps this summer he "stooped down" a little when being measured because he's every bit of 6'4" and Hurd kinda wants to hide that fact (presumably cause he really wants to be a running back).

He then said that he thought at the next level that Jalen would wind up playing defense before it was all said and done due to his size. I never heard anything about him being a cornerback, just a free safety.

These guys are definitely credible but I don't put much stock into what they were speculating on. Ultimately it's up to Butch and the boys and I think they believe they have one of the best RBs in the country. Either way, kid's a stud and will be a great Vol.

They do tend to get shorter, lighter and slower under the watchful eye of NFL scouts. However, if Jalen was going to play any defensive position, it would make more sense to put him at outside linebacker than safety. At 225-230 pounds going into his senior season in high school, he could easily emerge from a college strength-training program weighing 250 pounds.

U sure they didn't say safety or LB? He is way too big for corner.

I don't think they said corner. I didn't hear they. Just that he plays free safety for Beech and he might wind on D at UT.

Anyone doubting his rb abilities should watch his youtube film..then, upon completion, watch the film of the best backs of the last 5 years and judge for yourself.

I've seen the kid a few times. He's not too big for RB. I'd say he is a legit 6'2 225. Give or take 5 pounds and a inch. Most other RB's are much smaller and claim bigger size I.e. marlin Lane. He will look huge compared to our current backs. I'd say he will look like a slightly bigger and taller version of Aiden Hill... With amazing speed and elusiveness 😄

Stooped down to hide his height? Because if word got out he was 3 inches taller that Coach Jones would freak out and put the hammer down and so "no running back for you!"

This is stupid.

There's a reason these guys are lifetime HS slouches doing local radio.

Good point, but I wouldn't limit it to 5 years. Watch Eric Dickerson: Jalen has his size & running style.

Jacobs weighs more like 260. Jalen, at 6'4" 230, is more likel Eddie George or even Eric Dickerson big right now.

With him only being a junior in HS and his size is being compared to Jacobs, Eddie George, and Eric Dickerson. There is no doubt he will be playing RB on the hill. The 2014 season can't get here soon enough.

I saw an article where they said he was 6'3.5" and weighed about 230 lbs. They also said looking at him he looked like a LB or DE and going by his size, looks, etc. that you would assume him to be a true LB or DE. They then added that once you see him with the ball in his hands the only thing you think and see is RB all the way. I hope "they" are right!

Let me get this straight..... Beech is going to play Jalen Hurd at Safety after all of the yards he racked up last year at runningback. He had 7 touchdowns or so in the State Championship... Makes a lot of sense...

If he has the skills to be a big time RB and it seems just about every major college program thinks so then I don't care if he is 7'5 180. The kid will play RB.
