One of the juniors expected to battle for the top spot is Plant RB/LB James Wilder. When it comes to leaving a lasting impression, Wilder had very little trouble executing that as a junior when he dominated the 5A State Title game by registering over 190 yards rushing and two touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, he racked up seven tackles, one sack, and was also credited for a pass deflection that resulted in an interception.
For some prospects this would just be one of those games every high school star dreams of, but for Wilder, it was business as usual. In his junior season, he racked up over 1,000 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns. He also averaged nearly eight yards per carry. On defense, where some have Wilder projected, he might have been even more furious. He registered 136 tackles, 21 behind the line of scrimmage and 19 sacks.
The hardest part of evaluating Wilder's game is finding a weakness because honestly, there aren't too many. At running back, Wilder is extremely fluid and powerful. He never goes down after initial contact. Unlike most big backs, Wilder brings more than just power, he has unique top end speed to pull away from most secondaries. He also has great vision between the tackles. But if we are looking to critique his game, Wilder could show a little more patience in waiting for the play to develop. However, that's just nitpicking.
On defense, his projection goes up a little higher. Wilder has tremendous range as a defensive end and his first two steps off the line of scrimmage is some of the quickest you will see anywhere in the country. At linebacker, Wilder has a great feel for where the play is going and hits like a flying missile once he arrives. Although the rankings have yet to be released for 2011, Wilder has to be one of the strong favorites for top player in the state this season.
"He's a freakish athlete that could end up at RB, DE or LB. At running back he's just so physical and powerful fighting off blocks. He's a north/south type runner that is like a truck going down the field. But I think he is even better at defensive end were he's extremely quick off the ball, and strong as you will see fighting off blocks. I think overall he's the top player in the state. He's definitely one of best players nationally. He's going to have just about every college after him.
