Scout.com: Thomas Niles Profile

One junior to keep an eye on is defensive tackle Thomas Niles. The 6-foot-2, 260-pound junior is getting major interest from Michigan State, Georgia Tech and others who like his high motor and mean streak.

came from Rivals a year ago.

"They showed me the love," Niles said. "Coach Dooley drove A.J. (Johnson) and I around on the golf cart. He showed us the campus and made us feel welcome."

"They are at the top," Niles said of the Vols. "I only have two offers, but they have set a high bar as far as their facilities. They were nice and you could tell they have been taken care of. They had a lot of space."

"They were pretty intense," Niles said. "They seem like people that I'd like to play with. Coach (Chuck) Smith knows what he is talking about and that's why he is always talking. Definitely I could see myself playing for him."

"We (Niles and A.J. Johnson) were just thinking back over what we liked and what we didn't like," Niles said. "There wasn't anything that we didn't like. Just things we liked better than others."

Per Rivals...

Vols lead after his visit this week. Sounds like we made up some ground on Johnson too. would love to get the duo.

He says he wants to commit in May so we should be in good position. He is visiting Auburn this week, but they haven't offered yet.

Did i read that right, is he a 1 star. Eric, LV, Sab are we going after lower star players than we used to or is it just me. i realize i am ignorant about alot of things recruiting but seems the conversation has went from 4-5 star players interest in Tenn to 1-2 stars. am i wrong or just too early in the process with a new coaching staff that is pretty tightlipped to know?

1 star on scout most of the time means he hasn't been evaluated yet. Niles is a good player

Niles will be a 3/4 star player once all evaluations are done.

Would be a solid commit at a position of need and not to mention him being A.J's teammate which would definatly make him an exciting commit!

I think it is funny that people are worried about stars right now when most of these guys have been evaluated except by a few colleges. Also some of the recruiting services do not rate a player till he gets some offers, so depending on his offer sheet depends on his rating.
Just remember Taylor from last year when he was committed to us he was a 3 star but when he committed to Fla he went to a high 4 or 5 I believe so just sit back relax and enjoy the ride till NSD next year cause I feel a fun ride coming on.

That had a lot to do with his performance in the UA game as well but you make a great point. Coaches are 100 times more qualified to evaluate players than "analysts". That's why camps come first, then offers, then stars.

Niles will be nowhere near a 4*. He'll be a low 3* (5.5 or 5.6).

Good point Rusty, and i am not freaking out yet, but i am a little skeptical about this staff, but i know their is alot that can happen between now and then and im gonna give them the benifit of the doubt , just dont see all the high profile names out their yet and i understand that this staff is polar opposite the other and i may not hear much so i was just wondering.

Nah Mur73 I understand but I dont think we are going after people the staff believes is going to be low rated, they evaluate and recruit based on that. We are in on some pretty good players atm it just seems it is the 2nd tier player that is committing earlier right now and the 1st tier guys are riding theirs out going on tons of official visits to get to some of those big destination spots even though they prob wont end up going there.

This is what I have noticed, the last staff was a hoorah staff get kids excited and pumped the only problem with that is you might be pumped now but give it a week and that wears off. This staff is building relationships, from the things the kids are saying they are already giving these kids pointers to help them play better and I believe even if it doesnt pay off with huge recruiting class this year it will.

Also remember we prob wont have a top 5 class this year because those arent the players we need right now, we wont get 4 or 5 5* DT's and OL guys you gotta take 1 or 2 5's a 4 and a couple 3's if you are doing this.

High profile names?
Do me a favor, name the 2011 high profile names that you are familiar with, that we are not attempting to recruit?

I am not trying to down this staff at all, i guess i just got used to hearing "the high profile names" comment on Tenn under Kiffin. I understand their is a change in styles it only "seems" that the only really positive feedback we hear of is from lesser rated players. if i am wrong forgive my ignorance, i am not here to make a statement as much as to ask posters in the know their take on the situation. I know the sky isnt falling just trying to get info and opinions

Hey Brainiac, Unlike you i could not care less about your Grammer lesson. It obviously was a mistake on my part. As far as i am concerned though you know where you can stick your red pen there professor.

While i am sure you may find more grammatical errors in my posting i just want to let you know i will not respond because it is assinine to take correction from someone that is also ignorant of the proper use of the English language. But while we are analyzing grammer lets look at your post.

I believe the proper phrasing would have been "Way to use your head". not you're head as you did . This contraction is short for you are . So let us substitute this into your sentence and see how it works. Here we go.

Way to use you are head.

Nope, I don't think so pal, but glad to see you are using YOU ARE head anyhow. It truly benefited every eye that read it.

Yeah Rusty i think i am gulity of being caught up in this, even though i hate to admit it. When Kiffin was here it was like constantly being on a rollercoaster with the ups and downs in recruiting and in everyother aspect also it seemed.i am not suggesting that we aren't going after highly rated players though i just don't see the positive feedback from those guys like i wish, although i know that Dooley just got here.

I have to admit that last year was the first year that i really got into recruiting and was more used to the noise that was being made, not just by recruits, but also by the media. Good or Bad we were out there.

In stark contrast to this year, on College football live the other day ESPN had a segment about New Coaches and they mentioned Brian Kelly at ND and of course Kiffin at USC but the Dooley led Tenn team wasnt even in the converstaion. I do find this a little disconcerting but I am glad that we are no longer the punchline in College sports.

I do admit i miss the excitment that was in the air last year which led to the Vols exposure and in turn the buzz concerning interested highly rated recruits but i guess you pick your poison when dealing with high risk/high reward mercenaries like we had here and we can all see how that turned out.
