Sometimes it pays to be first. That appears to be the case for Oklahoma State as the young and depth challenged Cowboys offensive line gained some tremendous new support in the form of Alabama-Birmingham transfer Victor Salako, who has said he will enroll at OSU for the spring semester.
Salako will be a junior with two seasons to play. Following UAB's announcement last week that it was dropping football the Blazers starting offensive left tackle for all 12 games this past season was approached first by Oklahoma State.
The 6-6, 320-pound native of Huntsville, Ala., and Grissom High School just completed an official visit to Stillwater and OSU by telling the Cowboys he is coming for the spring semester.
"My visit went great. It was awesome," Salako said while on his way home. "I committed to them and will enroll for the next semester.
"It was all about the environment and how the players were great and easy to get to know and get along with. The fans, you can tell they love OSU football. The coaches made me feel really comfortable. I have a great relationship with the offensive line coach, coach Connelly. My parents really liked coach Connelly when he came to visit."
Salako said he was really only recruited by UAB coming out of high school, but after a redshirt season he played in reserve in every game his redshirt freshman season and then started every game this season for a team that averaged 33.2 points, 431.9 yards of total offense, and 212.1 yards rushing per game.
Salako really looks the part of a big time offensive tackle. He said the list was long of schools that contacted him after Oklahoma State, including Oklahoma, Miami (Fla.), Louisville, Nevada, Utah State, San Diego State, and Western Kentucky.
