'12 AL S Trae Elston

He's a better athlete for sure. But they play two different positions. Elston is a CB that's in the 170-175 lb range. He plays safety because he's the best player in the secondary.

You really need to get over this. He COULD play safety at the next level. His speed and ball skills are great. Its all about how he fills out with a college weight traing program. You have no idea what the staff will do with Elston if he signs.

New highlights put up of him on Rivals. He really understands how he has to tackle, given his size. Goes for the legs and really wraps up.

The new highlights of him playing DB on rivals is sick!! He will knock your head off!!

WANT!! (no homo)

Also FWIW Rivals updated his weight to 183.

Definitely would prefer the speed of Elston over Diggs. This class is going to have a speedy defensive backfield with Gray, Crawley, McNeil, and potentially Elston

Yeah alright. Remember how Spencer Ware was punishing our safeties? Now put a 180lb guy at safety and watch what happens in this league. Dooley and Co. want a bigger defense. He doesn't fit what they want at safety but definitely at CB. He can be a big time CB for us I have no doubt. But I personally don't even want to see him at safety. We'll see though.

Cant be right, according to some posters he is 170lbs soaking wet.

Hahahahaha you believe a listed weight over telling me he's 183 officially. Maybe a coaches weighing him in themselves or something. You want to prove he's a safety when we've had more than one of the insiders saying he's being recruited as a CB. Hahahahaha I'm about done with this back and forth convo with you guy.

Generally, I agree. I like the trend toward bigger players up the middle, and I think Elston probably plays CB if he comes to UT.

But Janzen was a big hitter for us at safety, and he was playing at 185 max. Probably less. IIRC, they even experimented with him playing down in the box like EB. Some guys play bigger than their weight. No reason to get hung up on it as long as he's making plays.

He is being recruited as a DB. I'll leave it up to Wilcox as to where he ends up.

Remember they wanted to move him to CB but we weren't good enough back there to have him at his best position of CB. Just because they are playing the position well doesn't mean they aren't out of position. Waggner has played well at safety for us but CB is his best position.

Sure, I remember. That could very well be the case next year too, though. We hope Brewer will come back strong, and Lanier or Moore will take a step forward. That Randolph will keep progressing. We're still thin and really young.

And I know you know this because I've seen you say you expect McNeil out there early and often. I'm just making the point that we want our best athletes on the field, and if that means putting a 175 lb. freshman at safety, I think the staff will do it. Unlikely, but plausible.

Waggner will be back I think next year too. So I don't think Elston will have to play his first year. Now I do want to see how much Coleman, Lanier, Moore, and Randolph improve. Moore could take the FS spot over. Also Orta will be back and from all reviews he's a hell of an athlete. Crawley will be an EE too. So hopefully we can redshirt Elston and Gray. Those two guys will be very good at CB after cleaning up some technical issues. They will help us set the edge a lot better with their physical style of play. I loved watching the Bama-LSU game Saturday. The corners were playing so physical on the edge against the run. These two guys(Gray and Elston) can bring that level of play to the corner. Also remember guys like Demarcus Milner for Bama were safeties in HS. The move happens more often than not from FS to CB. Elston will be a man at CB if he comes here.

I really hope Coleman can continue to progress. He seems to have the ideal attributes to be a really good CB.

Also I do think Mcneil will play early due to Brewer's injury #1. We don't know what he'll look like coming back. But I really would've like to see him with a few big plays this year. He was better in the bowl game than he's been all year.

+1 he has more lockdown ability than Lanier. Lanier's a big guy but he's not real fast and fluid. Coleman is getting a lot better and has learned from the early season troubles. Teams haven't been attacking him. We'll see what he does in this big game tomorrow. Moore will be very important in the Nickel spot.

Agree...beastly video...I really hope the reports of him leaning to us are true and we call pull this one off

Great player.. But if we dont get him.. An even better version named Vonn Bell awaits in the class of 13.

My friends in Oxford that know Trae said he's definitely a Tennessee lean and unless something drastic happens, like Alabama coming after him (highly unlikely, just an example), he'll commit to the Vols at the Alabama-Mississippi game.

Don't believe the no leader stuff, he just doesn't want to show his hand. He's a good kid though.

Sounds about right, and we're getting a good one. His speed and talent will be hell on the corner. Then he's a Bama boy that Saban turned his back on. Wait til he plays against the Tide. I love this pickup if we get him.
