'12 CA OL Matt Cochran (Cal commit)

Why not take his commitment on the spot? Is it a lack of available spots remaining?

No, not at all, at least I don't think so.

Dooley said last year, he doesn't believe in "hot sauce" recruiting. He doesn't believe in having a kid come in, getting him all fired up, and pressuring him to commit on the spot. He wants kids to make a rational decision, to see other places, to visit UT several times if possible, and then to make a decision that they're going to be sure about.

This is smart, as it gets kids that truly want to be Vols, and it gets kids that are most likely not going to transfer, unless asked, or not getting the PT. I really think this is the smart move. It's like holding off getting married on the first date, and saying, let's take it slow, and make sure.

Plus, we do have other spots that need to be filled. OL is not as big a priority as say, TE or DL. The staff will evaluate as they go, and need to make sure that who they take are the right takes.

Point well taken. Although I wonder if we get some Dear Johns from some other hot prospects if we start contacting him to make his decision?

Our center against NC state.

Very, very unlikely. We finally have some third year quality players on the OL. Freshman are just flat out not ready to play SEC football. We have had no choice the last couple years and that is why we have struggled.

heard he tried to commit on his visit. he was told to make sure tennessee is the right place for him and take his remaining visits. this kid is huge, absolute monster. seen him and tiny standing along side each other. he may not be quite as tall as tiny but bulkier.

I wish they would have announced his committment. As we saw last year, play at the center position was not our strong suit. Besides, it gets Stone back to a position on the O-line he would be more comfortable playing.

Cochran would be an excellent addition to our O-Line and our class as well. Its always good to take at least one O-Lineman every class and Cochran looks to be the perfect candidate for that spot. Lets hope he's a Vol.

Yeah, having Cochran would be wonderful. I'm excited to see where this goes.

A little early to forget about Mack Crowder isn't it? He will have had a full year in McKeefery's S&C and would have a huge advantage starting at C, IMO. I would bet a steak dinner that IF we get an OL this recruiting class, that player will not see the field till 2013 at the earliest.

Too often the fans get worked up over particular recruits and expect them to come in and start on opening day. In the real world, it doesn't usually work that way. If you've got frosh starting on day one, it usually means you got no depth, eg, last year.

I do not think we could afford a redshirt with him.

The staff does not like Bullard or Stone at center. If Crowder is ready to start, he will still need a backup.

We finally have some depth and experience on the OL. No way we burn a redshirt year on him to be the backup center.

Save it for posterity. If we get him he plays.

Marcus jackson was supposed to redshirts according to some people.

Our situation now is that Bullard and stone failed to play well at center and gooch physically can't do it and should get a medical and not count toward 85 and crowder is a redshirt freshman who may be the answer.

I forgot all about him...thought he left the team but I do still see him on the roster. What's he up to these days?

Bullard did a solid job at Center. Especially considering he has an entire off-season to work on the position if they leave him there. Our OL going into next season is in a totally different situation than coming into this season.

Banking on 2 guys who had a hard time playing Center and an unknown is not what I would want to bank on for the Center position going into the season. Besides, Stone could go back to his natural position of tackle, or at least play guard.

Not true. Never been true. Never will be true. Stone was recruited as a guard, projected as a guard, and is now playing (wait for it) .... guard! That tells me all I need to know about your opinion on the o-line.

"It was a pretty big influence but I'm still looking and still thinking about things. I'm still going to wait it out a little bit and I'm planning to make my decision in January. Right now it's Cal and Tennessee and I love both of them."

"Their offensive line, that group of people, is great," Cochran said of Tennessee.

"The people out there made my visit incredible. I didn't think it was going to be like that when I got out there but it was a lot of fun. I was going out to give coach (Derek) Dooley a look because he offered me a scholarship and I came back much more impressed than I thought I was going to be.

"The history is definitely attractive and they have a freshman, Antonio Richardson, he was my host while I was there. He's like a big brother for me. We have a lot of stuff in common so it was cool to talk to him about high school and college and what his plans are for the future."

He took his OV to Cal this weekend.
