'12 JUCO RB Marion Grice

That was my point Pace. I think we have talented backs, but they don't have a chance to show it. Our O-line is completely and totally devoid of having the mean streak needed to be effective run blockers. You have to enjoy firing off the line of scrimmage and just smashing the person across from you. We don't have that.

I get the feeling that our staff has decided it is more important to keep Bray upright than be worried about running the ball. I understand the thinking to an extent...but without a run game, we will not be winning many SEC games. When I watch film of guys like Posey, Tiny, and Crowder just mauling people(yes, I know it was HS) I question if these guys would not do a better job of run blocking. Maybe they are not as good at pass blocking so the staff just deals with the lack of effort by our starters and hope Bray can throw it well enough to win.

One of the more gifted runners in the country, Grice has lived up to his billing as an All-American candidate posting 430 yards and 8 touchdowns in four games including an amazing 241 yards and 4 touchdowns in a season-opening win over Fort Scott

He won't be able to contribute if our line doesn't improve. The running back won't matter, if there aren't any holes to run through.

Disagree.

Great RBs run avg lines into good lines. And bad lines into avg lines.

A great rb needs a crease where an average rb needs a gaping hole. (see Tennessee RBs)

I've said it all along, Poole gets yards that are there. If there's a 2 yrs hole, he'll get two. He doesn't make ppl miss, he doesn't break tackles, and he doesn't turn nothing into something.

Pace said it earlier, if crowder, posey, etc are road graders, give them a shot. It can't hurt.. At least not right now, and maybe it will fire the rest of the o-line up to start run blocking or they won't be starting anymore..

We've got to get a RB with juice man. All this average back stuff won't cut it. Rainey is a great back. He was locked down on some runs and got to the edge. He took decent blocking and turned it into big plays. He caught to passes for 105 yards. We don't have a playmaker at RB right now at all. I really don't know if we will have one before Bray is done. Lane has the potential but we'll see.

Exactly. That's why I said in Cross's thread that I hope he watched the UF game. A good back will get his yards, no matter how good or bad the OL is. And it was pretty clear we have some serious PT available at RB. Hopefully Grice watched too.

Yeah, Barry Sanders and Eric Dickerson were terrible behind those lines. LOL....

Real good backs make a huge difference. You do not see Lattimore at USCjr running thru huge holes..JMO

Great Backs change the angles for the blockers and the D. Thats why yardage piles up for them Avg.-Good Backs can either get whats there or get whats there and always fall forward for 2 more.

Hate to bust everyone’s bubble, but if you haven’t heard already, Fortenberry said today that Grice is a no go for the Vols. He isn’t leaving the state of Texas and will more than likely end up at A&M. Time to looks elsewhere.

He might be right about this, but Fortenberry's track record isn't so hot lately. Particularly with the state of Texas.

Hate to burst your bubble but he also said we had no chance at Santos or McNeil.

I agree. There is no doubt the Oline has some run blocking issues but the overall play at tailback has been far worse than the play on the offensive line so far this year. They are every bit as responsible for the poor running game as the Oline.

I think Lane is going to be a player eventually and showed a few glimpses against UF but he isn't there yet and the rest of the guys playing are simply average talents at best.

I agree with this post. Plus, I feel like people were expecting our OL to somehow shine against one of the best DLs, arguably, in the nation and the SEC. They're all sophs.

You don't have good-looking offensive lines without great backs. You don't have star-looking running backs without great blocking. You need both. One can make the other look good. Both can contribute to make it look bad.

Grice can help this team look good, regardless of where he eventually ends up.

Just came by to drop a note on Grice. He is probably going to end up with an A&M offer this weekend, and by all reports would jump all over it. He has said in multiple interviews that he grew up an Aggie fan and it would be hard not to commit on the spot.

Been hearing that for awhile. Congrats on Grice.

A&M hasnt offered him yet and they might not. I hope they do cuz we are going to need him next year in the SEC. but we still have a chance with a 4* RB out of Pennsylvania, so im not sure how hard A&M coaches are pursuing Grice.

I know they haven't yet , but I'd be shocked if they didn't. He is going to be a good one for A&M.
