I am not a coach but know enough about football to see what Dooley is doing here. He has been able to get a great offensive line, and a gunslinger for a QB. He has deep threats all over at the WR position to make big plays. Alot of big games are won in the trenches with a great offensive line and a bruiser for a RB. If you think I am wrong then how many time did latimore, and Dyer, and Richardson/Ingram win ball games by wearing out a defense. This is what Dooley is going for. He has big time playmakers at WR so we don't need a Mccluster type back. We need some bruisers to wear down a defense and keep them honest enough to throw over the top. I think what he is doing is perfect. Just think would you rather have a back that is fast but can't break tackles or one who is a little slower with power to break tackles when there is only 5 or 6 men in the box. Go Vols and bring on the power running game.

Here is my take, Hill could add a few lbs. & be a very solid FB for us that has the ability to catch the football out of the backfield or he could stay at RB & be a pounder in short yardage situations.

I just dont want to take this guy & Cross w/ short numbers, if I had to choose one it would be Cross hands down.

+1 This is my view. I think he's a good player. He could be a great FB for us.

I totally agree with this guy :)

There are different types of rb's.

He appears to be a "north-south" downhill type of back.

My favorite kind... Too many guys try to cut on a dime and get blown up in the backfield.

...welcome to the hill, Mr. Hill.

While the kid very well may end up as a FB or LB down the road...IMO..there is no way that CDD sold him on being a VOL by telling that would be his role here. Anyone who has seen our offense knows the FB does not get carries. I don't see a kid coming from Ohio as a 2000 yard rusher and player of the year to block for Poole and Lane. He had other offers and IMO..would have went elsewhere if he was not going to get to carry the ball. I may be way off here...but I just don't see it at all.

think Beanie Wells/John Clay type back with just a little les speed.
Beanie Wells 6'1 228 4.5
John Clay 6'1 222 4.5
Alden Hill 6'2 220 4.6
None were FB's and all can wear out a defense.

That's a stretch. Cross compares a lot better to those two guys. Hill looks like a FB to me. Some of you see him as a RB which is cool but some of you guys saw Fugate getting carries too. Hahahaha

one of the two is definitely a fullback. we don't have room to take two RBs but sure as hell need a FB. need him this year in fact

Fugate doesn't have this kind of speed, I am not saying he is fast but he is fast enough when you can't stick 8 men in the box and you can't arm tackle him either. Oh and we have a pretty decent line that would be wearing people out.

I don't think there will be 2 I personally think cross is gone and this is his replacement. And I just don't see him being a FB. Fugate is a Soph. and will be aroung for atleast 2 more years. There is not enough room in this class to take a FB and if it came down to it this kid could fill in. But I do see him being a feature back if he works on his agility and speed without gaining too much more weight.

Something you might want to take a look at. If you look at Fugate's recruiting profile on scout it has a FB next to his name. Hill's has a RB next to it. I understand what you see....but Fugate came in as a FB and it seems that Hill is not.

He fast but he's not explosive on all his runs. I'm just watching his film. And that's my take. He runs good after he straightens up. His lack of cutting ability is kinda iffy for me at RB. What do you guys think made Ingram a good back? Vision, cutting ability, power and quickness(would be explosive but he's not fast on the top end). He wasn't a huge back. I've seen him in street clothes more than once.

While I like Cross..I don't care for him trying to shop himself time and time again. I would be VERY happy if it came down to Hill and the recently mentioned Grice as Hubbs said we are still in play for him. I actually think Grice could come in and challenge all our backs for carries.

You think he's better than Lane?

SEC-caliber running backs by year

2010: Poole, Neal, Oku, Williams
2011: Poole, Neal, Williams, Lane, Smith
2012: Lane, Neal, Williams, Smith, Hill, Cross

Considering this offense will make heavy use of two backs in rotation (think Ingram and Richardson) there's lots of touches to go around. But the appalling lack of depth everywhere makes it a difficult sell to the fans that it's important to have enough of these back to keep the offense balanced. I definitely think to be competitive in the SEC they will need six quality backs in rotation in this offense.

IMO..you need to have 3-4 backs who are ready to go on any given play. There will only be 30-35 carries a game to go around. I think each back needs at least 8-10 carries to keep them happy. If one seperates himself from the group....I am all for him getting 20+ carries. We are pretty well stocked at RB right now.

I also think that RB is never a positon that is hard for Tennessee to recruit. I think it is one position where the large amount of backs who have went to the NFL makes recruiting easy.

LWS is correct -- one of them (Williams, Hill or Cross) will end up as a back-up to Fugate, which is a position of need. If Cross were to leave, I would expect us to replace him with another similar back.

As for the poster who asked about Norfleet, I could be wrong but I seriously doubt that he was ever high on our list, for the same reasons Kimbrow was not high on our list.

We have plenty of fast, hard to cover firepower in our WR and slot positions -- we do not need another one in our backfield. Opponents will not be able to stack the box against us this year because of the threat our passing game poses. That, plus what should be a significantly improved O-Line, should allow us to have a very well balanced attack that can keep a defense back on its heels with us dictating the pace of the game.

To accomplish all that, we need a pair of backs that can get the job done and an HB/FB (along with a backup) that can both block well and catch passes out of the backfield.

I believe that is what Dooley is doing.

I read on rivals earlier this afternoon that Hill wanted to hurry up and committ, because he was told there was only 1 more spot for a RB in this class, and he knew this is where he wanted to be. If true, then all the theories of FB, us taking 4 RB's, and Cross leaving would seem to be inconsistent with what he was told by the coaches.

Unless there were a silent or two. :)

This kid has shown steady improvement in his game. As a sophomore his forty was noted at 4.7, junior year at 4.6, and now he's been clocked at 4.51 this summer. He is getting bigger and faster. I agree that if we keep Cross, one of these two will end up at FB, but all I'm saying is don't be surprised if it's not Hill...

I think we have resolved any Cross issues. we want Cross.

Anyone else see a resemblance between the play of Hill and Arian Foster? Very similar backs imo. Hope he turns out like the Arian of now though
