Does it seem like Martin has a broader scope when he recruits? I feel like Pearl scoped in on fewer recruits (in general)

You're partially right. Pearl honed in on a few select guys and focused all his attention on them. He was unfortunate to have several recruits lie to him about their intentions, and having no backup plan backfired on him in occasion. Cashmere Wright, Elliot Williams, and JJ Hickson all three mislead Pearl and his staff up until the day they committed. Craft and Selby bolted as well, though not exactly in the eleventh hour like the others.

I see a class right now of:

Landry
Hubbs/thornwell
Crawford
King/Stephens/Davis
Nichols

The only issue with that is that's 4 more back court guys.

And considering we likely lose Stokes, Maymon, and Hall at the same time, that backcourt/frontcourt balance would be extremely problematic

That's why yemi progressing is a big deal right now. The biggest thing would be for jarnell to stay and play his junior year.

If he does 2013 could be tennessees best chance pre season to win a title. Jmo iirc

I would be willing to bet Stokes doesn't even think about coming back for his junior season.

Probably not but one can wish.

I could see a scenario where say Nichols, hubbs and Crawford come here with Landry and were primed for a big run he'd think about it.

That's some Memphis buddies coming in and a chance to do something special. I could see him atleast considering it.

We have to remember. His Sophmore year will be like a Freshman, and Junior like a Soph. Since he loses a year basically because of this year. He very well could through his Junior year, just to help grow and get ready.

Torrel Harris, Tobias' dad, claimed he would stay two years, but NBA money talks. If Stokes is a projected lottery pick, he will follow suit.

He said it was the plan. That plan didn't include his coach being fired, the program getting drilled, possible post season bans, and a NBA lockout creating a very weak draft.

It was somewhat of a perfect storm that pretty much forced Tobias to leave. There was nothing really I benefit from by coming back IMO.

So yea if that same scenario happens with stokes maye his "plan" will be altered as well.

I would be shocked if any Stokes/Harris-esque player stayed at UT while their NBA eligibility began. They can say all they want when they sign with us, but until they haven't declared for the draft in June, I'm definitely assuming they're leaving.

Your last sentence is pretty much my point. It's silly to assume just because someone has "plans" to stay, that we should chalk it up and assume they won't change those plans. Money talks, and very rarely loses an argument.

It's also silly though to say that they'll definitely leave.

All I'm saying is if 2013 season appears like this...a pre season top 10, a deep NCAA run protected, 2 or 3 of his Memphis bodies joining the team, the core all still together...that I could atleast see jarnell entertaining the idea of staying his junior year.

I'm not saying he will, but I also don't think he's absolutely gone either after next year.

Ok. Not sure I suggested otherwise.

You said if he's projected lottery, that he's gone.

And I still believe that. That would change his plans, because from what we've seen thus far, he's not a lottery pick in 2013. He has a lot of improving to do to get there. So, just like being a projected lottery pick in a weak draft effected by a looming lockout changed Tobias Harris' plans, Stokes improving his game enough to become a lottery pick likely changes his plans as well.

You don't think his "plan" is to be a projected lottery pick his first eligible year?

I don't think he is a lottery pick right now based on what we've seen. A lot can change in a year. An offseason of improvement and conditioning should go a long way for him. It might be his plan to be one, but it was also Scotty Hopson's plan too.

And he's not eligible this year, but he will be next year and I'll be willing to bet he will be next year.

Also, I'd say if he was eligible to go this year that he'd also be a lottery pick.

That kids plan coming out of high school was go to college, be a lottery pick, and play in the league. So when his dad said that about 3 years, it was with the assumption he'd be a projected lottery pick after 1.

Agree to disagree. No way on Earth he's a lottery pick if he's eligible this year. Sensationalism at its finest.

One word, potential.

A 6'9" 270lb 18 year old in the league makes gm's drool. I think he'd definitely go 1st round but that's impossible to prove really.

If he happens to grow another inch or 2 in the off season you can bet anything hell be a projected lottery pick.

Edit: after doing some googling on the 2013 mock drafts, many have him in the first round around 20-25. NBAdraftnet doesn't have him in but in their forum the guy that runs it has said hell be put in apparently and will be a 1st round lock. TIFWIW

You said lottery, and there is no way he's a lottery pick in 2012 were he eligible, potential or not. First round? Maybe, probably.

If he grows two more inches, you're right, he would be a lottery pick in 2013. Given that and his anticipated improvement, he'd be foolish to turn down lottery money. He's a smart kid and he'll make a smart decision.

People who anticipate a potentially 6-10, 6-11 kid with his skill set and a lottery grade to return to school for his junior year are dreaming. It's not impossible, but highly improbable.

You're right, mixed up lottery and thinking it was 1st round but it's not, it's like first 18 picks right?

Hansborough comes to mind as someone who was constantly a projected lottery pick, but continued to come back to school.

Just throwing it out there, but there's only one way to find out, and I'm hoping and praying he stays his junior year. If he does 2013 could be a great year for the basketball team.
