Thanks for pointing out your excellent post about the refs.
We do agree. Refs are human. They screw up. I believe it evens out over time like most things with humans with decent intentions. I'm not of the opinion the refs are routinely biased.
I agree the SEC does the game a disservice by not employing better, professional refs and paying them to train and simply officiate better than they do. I've also said I believe they won't do that because it's not in the SEC's best interest to look like a pro football league.
So I think we're stuck, the SEC is stuck, the NCAA is stuck with refs that are poorly trained and poorly paid. It DOES make the product, the games, less enjoyable but we keep watching and they keep making money.
There's absolutely no reason in it for the NCAA or SEC to improve the quality of the officiating.
Y’all have been going back and forth for pages. I don’t know why but I read most of it. I guess I found it mildly entertaining.
Anyway, here’s where I sit.
1. Refs suck and it’s seemingly gotten worse since replay. Then again, maybe we just notice it more now that there are a billion cameras and angles. Regardless, they suck. Football, basketball, whatever. NCAA has an issue.
2. No doubt refs do appear to be slanted towards a team in a particular game. In general, I don’t believe it’s due to fixing the game but that does happen of course.
3. In general, when one team gets favorable calls over another it does tend to even out over the course of a game.
4. Calls don’t always even out though as refs are human and get caught up in the emotions of the game. I believe that sometimes leads to one team, usually the home team, getting more favorable calls.
5. Again, yes sometimes there’s flat cheating and I assume that ties back to money. That’s the exception. As a team we need to worry about what we can control because there’s too much we can’t, including officiating.
