'13 TN DE Jason Carr (UT signee)

Yeah my dad grew up right outside Memphis - his brother went to Ole Miss and according to him being a UT fan where he grew up meant you were in the minority - there was more Ole Miss than anything in that area

Where? In Mississippi? That is by no means true, there are probably more TN fans in north Mississippi than Ole Miss fans.

Yep my wife grew up in Byhalia and she drove in to Memphis to work as well.

And they are Auburn fans. They're from Birmingham and my youngest nephew is dead set on going to the NFL. He's 10 years old and thinks he is Ray Lewis(literally). Used to hit kids when he was 7 and said he just wants to see them cry(my type of player lol). But there are a lot of new families in the Memphis area who aren't from Tennessee period. So I understand why it's a hard area to recruit.

Yep, this is also a problem with every big city. The more people move around the more this happens, people move way more than they used to. Its one reason we do so well in Atlanta.

You still have time to sway your nephew to UT. If he plays like Ray you know we can use him. my coach used to tell us to " go out there and hit'em mouf and let know you was there" (yelling with a dip in his mouth) and that was baseball. lol

I grew up in the Memphis area also but I have always loved UT. My sister and I are the only ones in our family that are UT fans. Everyone else is an Ole Miss or Memphis fan. My wife's family are Miss St or Bama fans. I get hated on by both sides. lol

May be kinda what CWG was alluding to. But around here in Memphis seems like there are are UT football fans who are Memphis bball fans. I don't like that.

And I got the pleasure to be at a blue-packed BWW Friday night to see them go down to St Louis. :)

No offense, but I feel bad for them. There is absolutely nothing in Byhalia. That's a good hour drive, btw. Cheap cost of living is a definite plus.

No offense taken. There is not a damn thing good about living in Byhalia IMO.

Carr told Fortenberry today that he is stil receiving letters from other schools but he is completely firm to Tennessee.

For the other Memphis guys--

I'm not originally from this area. What would be a good game of his to go to if I get a chance to go? Of course my wife and three kids under 3 may have something to say about me going...

If he ever plays against south panola, MUS, CBHS, or maybe East. Lots of talent on display in those games. You could see them play Central where Herron plays. Not sure of his class in TN.

damn didnt know they were that close to ole miss

but yea long state

When I was deciding between UT and ole miss I kept on being told that ole miss parties in Memphis. So my fam had a wedding to go to in Memphis, and it was the same wknd as the southern classic or whatever it's called. And that's all she wrote...

WS usually plays MUS, CBHS, and Briarcrest. One of those would probably be best to go to. If you want the best talent definitely MUS.

Carr, for me, is the recruit that I am most excited about for 2013 (so far). He appears to have daunting size and athleticism plus he is from Memphis and I think, as always, it is crucial to establish a pipeline from this part of Tennessee to Knoxville. I hope Carr is the start of several Memphis area players coming to UT this recruiting cycle and, even if not, I look forward to seeing him as a big, punishing end coming off the edge for the Big Orange. He just seems to resemble some of the large Alabama defensive linemen who have been dominating the SEC over the past several years.

Actually they do, there are more split loyalties than the rest of the state due to location and UM, but by far more grow up liking UT football than any other school. Just read the threads of most of the memphis recruits. By far most mention UT and/or say they like it more than any other school mentioned. So if you have at least a majority that favor UT, like Herron and Carr, those 5 to 7 spots can really help ease the strain on a recruiting class that has to rely on a lot of out of state talent. It also is easier to recruit them if they already favor you so you dont have to spend as much time as you might with an out of state guy and have more time to recruit the ones that do take more time

Like I said, I was never saying the distance is an advantage, but rather that it is not a disadvantage.

So after this Ill drop it and let it get back to Mr. Carr but I found this tool online that was just too cool not to share - I was going off of what my Dad and Uncle always told me but there has actually been research done in TV markets and with Google searches to see which teams people root for and follow in different markets - i tried my best to get it over Memphis but it is easy to tell with a glance that TN certainly isnt the dominant team in this market

CommonCensus Hotspot Sports Map

you can take your circle and move to any spot on the map to see the distribution of fans - as you might expect go over near Knoxville and its virtually all UT

you can see the rest of the article here - interesting read - The Geography of College Football Fans (and Realignment Chaos) - NYTimes.com

Dont think I buy it. For Nashville it says...

Tennessee 32
Vandy 29

A lifetime ago I worked in retail. We sold Sports merchandise in the Nashville area. Tennessee sales, on a bad day, was five times that of vandy. Yearly gross would probably be in the 2000% range more. If there are almost as many vandy fans as Vols in Nashville they sure dont buy anything.

If you read the article it says there are some quirks in it that cause it not to be 100% accurate but it gives you a good idea of what teams are popular in different areas

so if someone told you the #1 and #2 teams are UT and Vandy and they dominate x percentage of the mkt I don't think you would be surprised - some of those Vandy fans are likely also UT fans and few of the UT fans are likely Vandy fans so that is likely why it overstates Vandy's presence

it is not perfect but I thought it was a pretty cool tool to get an idea of what media people are seeing as popular teams in various TV markets

It is a pretty cool tool. IMO it just aint right concerning Nashville.

Altho it might explain why the Nashville media is so jacked.

its prob using neilson ratings which only covers people with a home phone, that subsegment of the population does not extrapolate well when you try to infer the behavior of the population as a whole, cool link tho, thanks for posting
