Yeah, I think traditionally there is just a large draw to Mississippi schools and Ark, but we've not had terrible luck with Memphis kids in the past.

The state itself is somewhat divided, in that there is Memphis and the rest of Tennessee, but I will say that this year it looks like Dooley is putting the heat on Memphis. Let's hope it works out. GBO!

I think we've done well with Memphis kids. We missed on Redmond last year, which was really the only guy we wanted. We can normally pull who we want. Other SEC schools do pose pretty big threats though.

It's true, I don't think we've been as bad at recruiting Memphis talent as people seem to think. The fact of the matter is that when Fulmer was here Tennessee just didn't have a ton of talent to offer. Sure there were guys that were standouts, which we got, but for the most part we recruited nationally. The past couple years there have just been more in state recruits that were fairly legit. We'll do just fine. I hope to get Herron from M-Town as well.

There are framed pictures of the 96' game in virtually every restaurant and sports bar. When their football program totally bottomed out, they hated us through the basketball rivalry and jumped on whatever bandwagon was the hottest. As a Memphian, my fb newsfeed blows up every time the schools play with "Orange is ugly" and garbage like that.

Recruiting is made even more complicated by the fact that Memphis City Schools are god-awful. Add to that the fact that there are usually only four or five kids worth pulling each year and you'll begin to understand why some posters get so frustrated talking about it...

location is the big factor imo

4 hrs from tuscaloosa

1.5 hrs from oxford

5 hrs from Fayetteville

6 hrs from Knoxville

Not as big as some think. These times are a little off. Ive have driven them all many times. It takes less than 6 hours to get to Knoxville and more than 4 to get to Tuscaloosa. Arkansas is almost exactly the same. Even so, as you can see they are ruffly the same distance, time wise. It really doesnt factor in, if we do our job we will get what we want out of Memphis. Part of that job is winning. People are not going to bama because its an hour closer. By the way, Arkansas has hardly ever, ever taken a recruit in Memphis from us.

Made it from Memphis to Knoxville in 4.75 hours a few times. Only once it took me more than 5.5 hours, and that was because of construction in Nashville.

Yep, and sometimes the trips to Arkansas can take longer, crossing the bridge and all. Its not as easy of a drive. Bama is not a straight shot and can take just as long with the roads you have to take. Not a factor in recruiting like some believe.

I have never really made it to Knoxville in less that 5 - 5.5 hours. That's going about 80 the entire way, so, I don't know. Maybe y'all have a rocket ship and I still drive a normal car. Granted, I live downtown, so it takes about 15-20 minutes to get out of the city.

Oxford is certainly not the same - and being about as close to other schools puts you on a level playing field, it doesnt necessarily give you an advantage

yeah those times were pulled from Mapquest so they should be pretty accurate - obviously if you are on the east side of Memphis by the interstate and you're talking about the first sight of Knoxville you see that can cut time off - but what i pulled as city center to city center and they seemed about right to me

Point is its not 6 or 8 hours like some believe. Plus bama is longer than 4 hours and Arky is about the same as us. So it negates the distance argument.

I didnt mention ole miss or miss st. We should beat them out in recruiting for obvious reasons. They are obviously closer and helps them sometimes with memphis.

I didnt say it gives us an advantage. I said its blown out of proportion. The times some people give are inflated. So the point is, if the distance is not a factor with bama and arky then we do still have the advantage of being the in state team. No one has taken as many memphis recruits as we have. Even while we have been down and doing a poor job in that area. If we do a better job and win, we will do even better and get what we want out of memphis.

The reason in-state matters imo is because of 2 reasons -1) its a short trip for friends family (location) and (2) they grow up a fan of the team

the majority of Memphis does not grow up TN fans and there is no location advantage - so you might as well look at it like you look at spots out of state that are 6 hrs from Knoxville

I think we could and have had more success w/in 6 hrs of Knoxville in GA than we have in Memphis so I would focus more there if I were the staff - obviously recruit the elite but I don't mind missing on a lot of Memphis kids b/c its going to happen and it doesnt prevent you from recruiting success

I have family that live in Lakeland and Cordova and it still takes me about 5 to 5.5 hours to get there from Chattanooga and that is running 80-85 mph. Nashville jacks up the whole trip. If they would finish the bypass it would knock off 45 mins off the trip.

damn didnt know they were that close to ole miss

but yea long state

Yeah my dad grew up right outside Memphis - his brother went to Ole Miss and according to him being a UT fan where he grew up meant you were in the minority - there was more Ole Miss than anything in that area

Actually they do, there are more split loyalties than the rest of the state due to location and UM, but by far more grow up liking UT football than any other school. Just read the threads of most of the memphis recruits. By far most mention UT and/or say they like it more than any other school mentioned. So if you have at least a majority that favor UT, like Herron and Carr, those 5 to 7 spots can really help ease the strain on a recruiting class that has to rely on a lot of out of state talent. It also is easier to recruit them if they already favor you so you dont have to spend as much time as you might with an out of state guy and have more time to recruit the ones that do take more time

Like I said, I was never saying the distance is an advantage, but rather that it is not a disadvantage.

A lot of the families that are there don't even stay in Memphis. My sister and family stays in Olive Branch but they drive into Memphis to work everyday.
