'13 TN DE Jason Carr (UT signee)

Clark will get reps... in fact if he continues to emerge it will allow Couch to get outside some...

The SDE in a 3-4 easily gets turned into a 4-3 3 tech when the OLB walks down ... anyone who has watched a Bama game has witnessed this... Couch is a prototypical 3-4 DE imo... he will start at NT due to being the best we have that is ready to go....

Couch is nowhere close to a "prototypical 3-4 DE". He is 6'1.5" 299 lbs. He can certainly play as a situational player in a 3-4, but he does not have the length or the lateral quickness to be an ideal 3-4 DE.

He's a very good fit at 3-4 end. He's strong at the point of attack and can penetrate some. A taller guy like Clowney is a prototype to play DE in the 4-3. You need stocky guys to hold the edge in the 3-4.

Yep, I think he would have already been a beast at DE if he would have been left there. That's his natural position. I can't wait to see what he does this year.

On Smith, I agree I think he was playing slow because he thinks to much. He has the physical tool to be a beast he just needs to work on the mental part of the game. I think Sal maybe just the coach he needs to reach his potential.

I think Smith is a bit overrated as an athlete on this board. He looks a bit better than his. Reminds me of James Wilder Jr., great body but overrated as an athlete. I watched a couple of QBs just leave Jac when I was expecting him to close in for the kill shot.

This. Bama's DEs would be DTs in the 4-3 and our defense is in the same mold.

I just don't think that is true at all. There is one DE starter on all of the NFL 3-4 defenses that is under 6'3", and that is Glenn Dorsey who is playing out of position and was one of the greatest DT's in the history of the SEC. There are also no DE's shorter than 6'3" at any major college that runs a 3-4 (UGA, Alabama, GT, Stanford, and ND). Clowney is better suited for a 4-3 because of his body type and weight (255). Couch will play more at Nose because he is better suited for nose, although he is the one player on the defense that was much better suited in the 4-3.

He's a very undersized Nose. Much better sized for DE. He's not even a wide body. I'd wonder about him holding up there all game.

Couch is a pure 4-3 guy if he makes it to the NFL but he can be effective in a 3-4 in college. He's plenty quick & strong enough to be a pain in the rear for collegiate guards and tackles in a 5 tech. NFL guys, not so much.

Miller has the frame of a Jack but isn't nearly quick enough to play there. I really don't see him contributing much. Will probably be a situational SDE when 4 man fronts are ran.

Wasn't Dareus a DE at bama? He was about the same size as Couch while he was at bama, iirc.

Hell no. We make em a bit bigger down here in the state of Alabama.

He was 6'4" 277 coming out of HS according to rivals and played at around 300 at bama (listed at 6'3" now on espn). Couch is 6'2" 300. That's pretty close.

No he wasn't. Dareus was every bit of 310-315 @ Bama. It's a bad comparison because Dareus' brute strength is what made him great. Couch has nowhere near that strength and is more of a quickness guy.

He was much bigger than his listed weight. More like 320lbs, friend of mine is close friends with Dareus. I seen him more than once when used to come up to Birmingham and hangout. He's a big boy. I remember he got up to around 330 at one point before his last year down there.

Dareus is a whole different level of athlete. He's every bit as quick as Couch is too while be so strong and violent.

Oh ok my mistake. Thanks for the correction.

Sure about that.......Jordan Williams is the one. Don't trust Jac one bit yet....

Jordan Williams and LaTroy Lewis excite me more as JACK linemen next year than a senior Jac.

I really hope Smith finally becomes the player we all hope he would this year.

I hope you are correct. I was expecting him to be a "beast", but so far he has demonstrated very little -- more like a "puddy tat", as Sylvester would say.

I have been blaming his lack of production on playing in an unnatural position, but this year he will have no excuses and needs to get himself into that "beast" mode. I really hope he shows up and shows out.

"Puddy tat" is what Tweety would say.

Why does almost everyone on VN think that a 3-4 is simply putting 3 players on the Dline and then the play starts?

There is so much more to it than that, it's impossible to explain in text...

3-4 show more of a 4-3 than they ever do of just lining 3 guys up on the line... and what does that do to the DE in a 3-4 if they transition to 1 gap responsibilites? It makes that DE a 1/3 tech DT... which couch does well...

Also a 3-4 DE has two gap responsibilities in certain plays... What DL on UT's team has quickness and can be a two gapper? Couch...

Would I choose him over every other 3-4 DE in NCAA? No. Will he be a great 3-4 DE if McCullers/Clark emerge at NG? I think so...
