'13 TN DE Jason Carr (UT signee)

Why does almost everyone on VN think that a 3-4 is simply putting 3 players on the Dline and then the play starts?

There is so much more to it than that, it's impossible to explain in text...

3-4 show more of a 4-3 than they ever do of just lining 3 guys up on the line... and what does that do to the DE in a 3-4 if they transition to 1 gap responsibilites? It makes that DE a 1/3 tech DT... which couch does well...

Also a 3-4 DE has two gap responsibilities in certain plays... What DL on UT's team has quickness and can be a two gapper? Couch...

Would I choose him over every other 3-4 DE in NCAA? No. Will he be a great 3-4 DE if McCullers/Clark emerge at NG? I think so...

Thanks. I think.

Actually I am speaking as someone who played in a 3-4 and coached both a 4-3 and 3-4. Couch is a NG in our system. He will play with McCullers a good bit on the field, but will not be a 3-4 DE unless there simply isn't anyone else that can play the position. Couch does not have the versatility to play as an every down DE. The defensive staff would never want Couch outside of a 4i. If he was going to transition to a DE he would of at least had one snap there in the spring.

Love your posts Madkins. It's great hearing from other informed fans and posters.

I have played/coached in a 3-3-5, 4-4, 4-3, and 3-4 (to throw my cred out there too). One thing is obvious, we have different perceptions of what Couch can do... If he shouldn't ever line up outside 4i than he would be a terrible DE... I think he can...

Who then in your opinion can play the 3-4 DE for UT? I'm not being a jerk... would actually like to see your opinion.

PS:

Sentimore, Phillips, Miller.

We are in trouble than...

Phillips is a freshman who hasn't done a single thing in college...

Miller is coming off a hiatus...

Sentimore I agree....

I think Trent Taylor can give us some good minutes this year. I really think we'll see #37 used in the box a lot on early downs. Kid is a good young safety.

A lot is riding on Miller, Williams and Saulsberry this year. Miller especially. They also say Fowlkes is up to 260.

I think the biggest question mark is the untested McCullers. If you think about it Bohannon and Couch (toward the end of last season) are the only two proven lineman we have.

Yes, we are thin unless those 4 and Hood step up and McCullers is a good as advertised.

We're better equipped to deal with injuries with the bodies we have now. For awhile there it seemed like UT was one torn acl away from being completely screwed.

BB I like talking football with ppl who can talk x's & o's... and we have had some good conversations....

but how can you include the FS in the box in a 3-4?

on early downs with no blitz package called we will more than likely be in a 2 shell or a cover 3... how can a FS be in the box in either of those coverages?

I agree about Taylor... he performed well in the spring as an EE.... he could provide 10 quality reps a game.....

They we're using him in the box in the spring game.

If I remember correctly, Sal and the players were saying something to the effect of we were getting rid of the traditional roles of FS and SS and making them more interchangeable bc it makes the defense harder to decipher. This may have been why #37 was seen in the box in the spring game.

spring game randolph was the Only Safety who is capable of playing in the box.

Orta and BMoore do not and can not excel within 7 yards of the LOS
