'13 TN OT Christian Morris

Thunder, you watched Morris' film that I posted above yet? I'm watching it & trying to figure out what Pittman didn't like about him. I'm no talent evaluator by any means but Morris is coming off the ball low, locking on, & mauling people. He is even getting down field on stretch plays/screens & hitting people.

I watch his film and I see huge positives and glaring things that would cause concern.

Positives-

Plays with his hands. At the college and pro levels you have to be able to play with your hands, overall he does a good job keeping them inside and solid hand work eve on defense.

He plays very hard, which is another huge plus. He often is thelast guy to stop and thats what you want to see out of a dominant lineman.

Concern-

His footwork is a massive concern for me. He has slow feet and a poor base. This would have to improve for him to play tackle at an SEC level. Thats the big question mark, cause if his feet dont come around, he simply cant play tackle.

Yeah I saw it...I'm no expert either but I don't get the hold up Pittman reportedly had with Morris...the word is he looked bad at our camp but is one bad day enough to make you ignore impressive film and the fact that this player has looked great at every other camp he's been at?

I've been waiting since July for us to change our mind about Morris...my fingers are big time crossed that this works out

It is footwork, I have to believe its footwork, slow feet. Look at his verticle set, he is doing a lot wit his hands, and limited set using his feet. Would concern me and his camp would show overall footwork.

Is that something that can be corrected with good coaching?

First thing I saw: heavy feet. I always thought he was a guard, but it’s not like I had the guy in camp doing specific drills so I could see if it’s correctible. Seemed like a guard candidate to me, along with Koehler. But that’s just from me looking at 7 minutes or so of highlights, not repping a guy on a sled or watching an entire season of cutups.

And watching OL tape is like watching QB tape, darn near useless.

Depends. Could be because he hasn’t been taught to move his feet, or because he is incapable. Like somebody else said, Pittman must not have thought so. Mahoney must have a differing opinion.

Different coaches different opinions. Regardless of opinions if the coaching staff wants him then it's good enough for me. (Wasn't directing anything at you)

He showed out as an OT at The Opening against some of the best DL in the country. He was noted for his quick feet.

Sometimes. Its not a sure thing. More often in high school you see a guy with good feet that doesnt do the work with the hands and is taught more to fire out. As a tackle you must have a good verticle set. Its one of the things that makes Tiny so good against the pass.

The question is he a good enough athelete to correc the feet? That is something they might have gotten a feel for at camp. Feet is the reason you have heard of pro linemen in the past taking dance classes, and it was one of the main reasos I played basketball in high school was cause it helped my footwork.

Morris has everything else you would like to see though. Long arms, good use of hands, and plays hard. The feet are the major concern and at 6'7 290 he would not havve fit as a guard in the previous system, but honestly in this system, you might could mask his footwork issues at guard in more of a spread offense. His size might fit at guard now where it wouldnt have in our old blocking scheme which called for bigger guards.

I simply disagree, watch his film, he sets, his feet are heavy on pass rush and he lets hands do a lot of the work. Great hand work, but will need that strong verticle set in college.

Morris looks every bit of his listed height and weight of 6-6 and 270 pounds. Although he has a little baby fat, he generally is in excellent shape. Morris displayed soft feet Friday from his spot at tackle, gliding well to both sides, and using sound technique, which allowed him to keep his hips in proper position. Morris also displayed solid strength.

Morris is a big kid with a really nice frame to add weight and he showed nice arm extension and good footwork on the outside. He engaged after his initial slide out of his stance and did a good job steering defenders where they didn't want to go because of his length and use of arms. He needs to get stronger, but he has a lot of intangibles.

Morris has great size, long arms and he uses both to ride players to the outside. But what's really impressive is how he moves his feet to handle inside pass rushers. A mid-level three star right now, that will be changing.

Morris has a long frame, very long arms, he has good feet and he keeps them moving while extending those arms to keep defenders at bay. I thought he was simply a tall kid who would ride everyone outside, but on inside moves he anchored well and showed off great change of direction and recovery.
- The Opening

Morris turned heads at The Opening at 293 pounds and the UCLA commit could add more weight to his frame. Morris is already equipped with long arms and good feet. His performance at The Opening improved his stock significantly, as he frustrated high-level defensive linemen by riding them to the outside.

Thats actually a good sign, but watching his film he takes his initial vertical set and then doesnt continue to move his feet to stay in position. Maybe he is overprotecting his inside, but I do not see the active feet in the vertical set.

Also his hands are really good, but he will get beat on speed rushes consistnatly if he doesnt follow through with his vertical sets.

As I say that, I will be honest so few high school line coaches are going to be able to teach what they need to know. I never really learned the mechanics behind the vertical set till college. Seeing what you posted, I am curious what Pittman found wrong as well. Cause it doesnt sound like his feet are beyond teaching for sure.

You are entitled to your opinion/observation and I am not saying that you are wrong at all but I'm going to roll with the evaluation of the guys at the opening.
