It's totally the opposite here in Cali. You could be in a room with a bunch of people, and they would all be texting. The bolded statement makes me wanna move down here. California sucks despite what anyone says. It's a dead state.
One of my friends was out in Cali during the tech bubble. He didn't have a discernible accent but the Californians could tell within a few moments he wasn't from Cali. They told him it was because he was so friendly whereas Cali people tend to be more restrained.
I always shake my head when I hear fellow Canadians boast about how friendly Canada is. The only time someone will look you in the eye on the street and acknowledge you is if they want something.

I agree that a lot of people don't know or care where their ancestors came from. Most people just automatically assume they must be english or irish. I for one am very proud of my scotch/irish and german heritage!
Yea we flew out to Disneyland in August. My wife was running in a marathon. My kids enjoyed the parks, although they like Orlando better. People were not rude, but they were in their own world, kinda like you said. There were homeless people everywhere. The weather was great though:good!:.
Homeless people are everywhere. See them all the time sadly. It's ironic that were suppose to be more peace loving here, but we have a lot of crime here. There's least one shooting a day here.
There are actually quite a few homeless people in Knoxville, but that is because the city has a reputation for being nice to the homeless. When Katrina happened, New Orleans sent bus loads of homeless up to Knoxville. Most of them are genuinely good people who have fallen on hard times. I tried to buy them McDonald's or Copper Cellar whenever I could when I was a student.
