'14 GA PG Devin Mitchell

Someone had said that CCM said that when he got to UT (I didn't see it myself). But I think most of us on here agree that we have needed a true PG. That is why we are all excited about Barton.
Well Barton is far from the "true PG", he's more of a combo guard than Golden but Barton's perimeter shot is what will really help this team.

Barton was actually a PG coming out of high school and played PG, Golden was a SG coming out of high school.

He is much more of a PG than Golden. This team may have made an NCAA Tourney if we had a PG. Everyone around here knows how I felt about Golden. Good scorer. Terrible PG.

Barton is a combo guard and played both the 1 and 2 at Memphis. He's been more of a scorer than passer. I think he'll do well at the 1.

Announcing tomorrow at 3pm, definitely looking like Bama.

Grant is putting together one hell of a recruiting class, top 100 PG, SG and SF he will have committed it appears.

Thought he was on the hot seat going into this year, but id say he just bought himself another year regardless of this seasons outcome.

Agree it will be Bama. He cut his list to 8 and I don't think the other 7 make much difference.

Competing in the SEC does have its challenges. Most appear to be fairly upbeat about CCM's upcoming class yet the services rank the commits lower than Alabama's. IMHO, Alabama is a notch below TN on the basketball scale yet they are out-recruiting UT at the moment. Hopefully a couple more big fish will land in the UT boat.

Not an exact science but I agree. We should be beating bama on the trail in hoops. Kudos to Grant.

Having talented players who are in state helps (not counting Memphis). Norris grew up a Bama fan, and Coleman made it known he wanted to stay in Bama. Dev is the most impressive pull of all three, very good class so far.

I love to put our program in a favorable light, but Bama is on par with us in basketball. They have about 30 more overall wins, a slightly higher winning percentage, and have played basketball for 4 less years. The difference may be facilities, but I don't know. I have been to Coleman Coliseum, but it was 10 years ago. It is much worse than TBA.

That said, Bama has in-state talent (as BTO said), and UT rarely signs talent in-state that is east of Nashville. Also, we have to recruit against Vandy (Top 50 overall school) while Bama recruits against Auburn (terrible history). Finally, Grant is a good recruiter and has shown that.

All that said, it is time to beat them. I am ok with the recruiting class, but it would be certainly nice to finish with a dynamic player or two. I would have to think we have a good shot with London, and hopefully, we can land Hurt. I have doubts about Looney.

You guys would know Tennessee recruiting better than me, but is there really no other talent other than the Memphis area?

Hard to believe no one comes from the Nashville suburbs or Chatanooga.

Every ball player in TN not from Memphis is not good.

Even the ones from Memphis seem to be overrated.

There's probably worse states in the Union for HS bball talent than TN though. Rhode Island, Maine, North Dakota, etc.

Every once in a while there may be a good player east of Nashville. Shannon Hale was a top 100 player, but his stock dropped last year. Knoxville doesn't produce many at all.

The growth in and around Nashville will start producing more players, like in football. There is a boom in talent in football in the mid-state area, and that will certainly help us. West TN has always had good players, but it is always tough to pull out of Memphis. Once you get out of Shelby County, most of West TN is all orange (see Chism and Hubbs).

But, UT basketball has to hit Georgia hard. Alot of talent that is 3-5 hours away. UGA and Tech are not great, and you have to take advantage.

The Memphis area has had a long history of great basketball talent due in part I think to great coaching and a larger African-American community in West Tn. It is what it is.

Good points. I remember David Vaughn when he played at Memphis. He was Mid State player out of Nashville. Had he not hurt his knee he would have made it to the Association. Memphis had long pulled talent from the inner City of Memphis and occasionally getting some players from West Tn, Arkansas and of course Mississippi. When Calapari came he had no intention of playing politics with the area HS Coaches so he went National for his recruits an occasionally pulled an area kid in. As for CCM I think he knows he cannot put all of his eggs in the basket with most kids out of Memphis. As you pointed out Georgia has a plethora of talent and middle Tn is beginning to blossum with good talent as well. Pastner's time to win is now, if he falls again many Memphis kids will see him as only a recruiter and not the guy that can win meaningful games.

I agree. Larry Finch was David Vaughn's uncle, so there was no doubt that he was going to Memphis. Calipari also didn't want to deal with the "posse" that Memphis players sometimes have. Of course, their family is local, so the complaints about playing time and such wil be louder. There are some players that Cal should have recruited, but I think he did ok for himself.

You know it's tough when you spend alot of time recruiting Austin Nichols, and you end up second. Nichols was a private school kid, had a sister at UT, and had a good relationship with Martin. All points to UT, but it is always tough. I think his parents were UM alums though, so that made it difficult.

Tech has been down the last few years but lets not act they aren't a solid school historically...just underachieved big time under Hewitt and I expect that to change now under Gregory and he has done a solid job on landing GA players so far and I know he is making a priority to recruit GA hard.

Not to mention their are an average about 10 players from GA in the top 150 each year so they can't all stay home.
