'14 GA S Cortez McDowell (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Sooner a kid commits the more it helps solidify a top class. We are seeing that this year more than any other in years past. Waiting till NSD is becoming less and less the thing to do and kids are committing a lot sooner. I agree as long as they sign with the Vols I am happy. If they do it sooner, it may help land a better class as that is 1 more recruiter we have on the job.

How do you know that they are not already recruiting behind-the-scenes?

We're doing just fine in OL/DL recruiting, sitting pretty for a bunch of good ones.

Like whom? This is not really the thread, I know, but I don't get to follow recruiting as closely as I'd like. This seems like a good opportunity for a quick list. Thanks...

Dylanvol (probably the best poster on VQ, he's a big reason we get so many answers out of Hubbs and P Fort) put together a nice thread discussion on this topic yesterday...I'll just copy/paste his OP...

As we all know the needs are big in the trenches on both sides of the ball. But when you look at both the current commitment list as well as the board you have to be elated at where we are right now on both sides:

OL
Commitments:
OT Coleman Thomas - I know he's listed as a Center but at 6'6 and with those feet IMO he's got potential as an NFL OT
Orlando Brown - massive OT with a s-ton of upside

Very realistic prospects (high school):
Brock Ruble - visiting next weekend
Noah Kelleher
Alex Bookser - made his top 8 yesterday
Corey Martinez - made his Top 6 today
Taven Bryan
Damien Prince
Isiah Wynn
Roderick Johnson

Very realistic prospects (JUCO EEs):
Dontavius Blair - likely leader
Dominick Jackson
Chad Mavety
David Hedelin

Prospects with interest but w/o current UT offer:
Matthew Pyke - instate, camping this weekend
Bruno Reagan - instate, camping this weekend
Andrew Shoffner
Cole Hardin
Cole Turner
Benson Napier - instate, teammate of 2015 commitment Stewart
Nick Richardson - visiting June 11

Frankly, IMO we haven't been in this good of shape at OL in as long as I can remember. It would be a huge upset were we not to land a very very highly ranked and talented group of OL that includes some guys who are ready to contribute immediately.

DL
Commitments:
DE Joe Henderson

Very realistic prospects (high school):
DE/DT Derek Barnett - instate, coming up for his 3rd visit this spring, this time with his mother
DE Lorenzo Featherston
DE Dewayne Hendrix - if not outright leader then tied for that spot
DE Jalen Jelks - ties to Cincy and likes the Vols
DE Andrew Williams - visited on 3/16, Brent says we're in the hunt
DE Rick Leonard - Top 5 and he hasn't even visited yet
DE Lorenzo Carter
DE Connor Humphreys

DT Charles Mosley - instate and 2nd at worst
DT Michael Sawyers - instate and right at the top
DT Poona Ford - leader
Travonte Valentine - Top 3
DT Chris Williams - Top 3 at worst but trail OM
Derrick Nnadi - stud who Paul says we're in the mix for
DT Justin Jones
DT Daniel Cage

Very realistic prospects (JUCO EEs):
DT Edwin Lambert
DT Abu Lamin
DT Cory Johnson

Prospects with interest but w/o current UT offer:
Ricky Walker

Once again, in the mix for a ton of very high level talent at both DE and DT. I expect this class to go a long way towards replenishing the talent and depth on the DL, and I'm hopeful that we sign at least one JUCO EE DT who can contribute immediately in 2014.

Much appreciated, my Libertarian friend.

My top 3 schools are tied.

Didn't say what schools. I assume it UT, Auburn, and then FSU, (maybe Vandy since he was there today)?

Between McDowell and Gaulden who do you think is the better DB prospect. I know Gaulden is being looked at for both Safety and CB but McDowell is rated just a little bit higher on Rivals and a lot of bit higher on 247. Based on film and everything else, who ya got?

Why are Featherston and Carter in the "very realistic prospects" category?

4-star S Cortez McDowell's visit to #Vandy on Sunday puts the #Commodores in good shape heading into the summer

As Jayson Swain would say: *blank stare*

I agree I think we may have a couple silent but 8 is crazy. If they are 8 they need to commit so other good players will see and get more interested. And I use to think Mcdowell was all Vol but a lot of people think he is going to end up at Auburn. I AM HOPEING WE CAN STEAL C Garret from lsu. and get a few high 4* or even 5*.

Whichever one commits first. Though, with Gaulden, it has been said that he and Barnett will be a package deal. So if that is the case, I'll take Gaulden and Barnett. :hi:
