'14 JUCO DT Jihad Ward

Is there any chance at all that we could get one of these DTs or DEs that haven't sent in their LOIs yet?

Please Jones!!!

What are our options next year at SDE in your opinion?

We'll have the following DEs on the roster next year (some could also play DT): Williams, Vereen, Lewis, Vickers, Miller, Brown, Hendrix, Barnett, Mixon, Henderson, and Thomas. We may also see Maggitt some at DE.

I would be happy filling the void Lambert left, with this guy. Big enough to play DT, especially on passing downs, and athletic enough to be a pass rushing demon at DE. If he doesn't project to be in the 2 deep rotation on the DL, next year, we could always move him to TE, where we need a lot of help, too.

If what has been said about his athleticism is accurate, he might be the best choice to replace Lambert. He could play inside or out. But of course, he most likely won't have the immediate impact Lambert could have had. D-line play next year will most likely make or break our defense. I think our LBs and DBs will be good, but if the DL can't get a push, it won't matter. It's not hard for a QB facing no pressure to make LBs and DBs look horrible.

6'7 285

4.6 40

Has been quoted as saying Tennessee was his #1 not long ago.

IMO, I'd roll the dice on this athlete and see how it shakes out.

Also as I stated in another thread, 247 ranks Ward ahead of both Lamin and Reed as Juco DTs. They seem to think the kid can play some ball.

I'd be very surprised if he ran a legit 4.60 40 although it's not impossible. It would make him faster than half of the RBs at last years combine lol. But there were a couple DLinemen that ran in the 4.6s. Here's a link to the results (some freaks in there):

Either way he's definitely a freak athlete and I'd take him in a heartbeat now after losing lambert (that one still hurts).

Kid looks like a beast. After missing on Lambert, we should be able to coach up that type of size and athleticism.

I'm not much for reaching. And the problem with development is that he only has 2 years. I would rather stick with who we have, maybe go after Andrew Williams if he is still interested and call it a day on the D-line. Lambert really put UT in a tough spot.

Anything going on with Ward?

They haven't been doing much with him so we will see if that changes after yesterday's news. I don't see anything happening with McDowell.

Hoped they would give the kid another look. Of course he may not have listened anyway. Obviously he knows he was not a priority for UT at all and other schools have been recruiting him hard. I'm curious to see where he lands and how he does.

I am too. I always liked this kid and I see huge potential for him. I think if he were an EE he would be much higher on our staffs board. But after losing Lambert I hope Ward gets a call.

you think they give Heurtelou another look? Really interested to see what they do.

They way Hubbs and Fortenberry have talked lately the staff doesn't seem too high on Heurtelou, McDowdell or any of the other JUCO DL they once were interested in. Hubbs said something last night that if they add a new JUCO it will likely be someone we haven't heard much about. I don't think they want to reach on any JUCO's, especially ones who are not EE's.

If it were me, my calls would be in order:

Ward
Cage
McDowdell
Ross
Heurtelou

I would probably contact Cory Johnson (uk commit) as well and see if he was interested.

I wouldn't take a JUCO unless I were absolutely sure their physical development was SEC level and they had received great coaching. If not, take a HS player who has 5 years to give you.

I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to sign another HS DL instead of another JUCO at this point. Unless they find a good JUCO EE who hasn't signed yet which won't be easy.

Full court press on Andrew Williams would be my first move.

I hear A. Williams has a really good vertical, makes layups on the reg and hasn't missed a free throw since rec ball. Cuonzo most definitely needs to give him a call. IMO JMO

He would get to UT and within a year of CM coaching he would be shooting 11% from the floor and 27% from the line.

I heard Cory Johnson was at the very bottom of their bord. There is a reason no big schools really made a play for him. They had him well below McDowdell and others.

I dont think you are going to get any quality JUCO's at this point.

Ward might have good measurables but it would be stupid to take a JUCO project. Before 247 came along "projects" were rated low 3-stars. 247 has changed that for some reason and thrown out some ridiculous rankings for guys they've called themselves "projects" like Ward, Sharpe and Elam.
