'14 JUCO LB Chris Weatherd (UT Signee 2/5/14)

I know a lot of people get upset/nervous when a thread like this is bumped, but I thought this was worth sharing...

What are the chances CW makes it out of Juco and what do you think of his skillset?

"I think he will get out this spring and be here this summer. I think he will be in the two deep and could push to be a starter. I think the biggest question is can he play in open space in spread sets as a linebacker? Can he be a 3rd down rush end. We will see where he is when he gets here."

Very good news, IMO.

Excellent news...

Weatherd starting means that Maggitt could possibly move to DE full-time, with AJ and JRM being the other two starting LBers.

With the news of first Maggitt and now Weatherd taking hybrid DE/OLB roles, that has me wondering if Jancek's flirting with any more 3-4 sets... We did roll it out one or two times last season and that could be where Mosley and Robertson come into play. They won't be ready to go at NT immediately but I could get down with a future iteration of Williams, Mosley, Vereen (DT NT DE) backed up by Weatherd, AJ/Germany (depending on year), JRM, and Maggitt.

I know a lot of people are allergic to the 3-4 after the infamous Sal experiment of 2012, but that's a pretty mean front 7 if coached and taught correctly. And it would be an occasional package as opposed to a base defense.

VQ had this to say about it this morning

"Defensively, the Vols continue to explore ways to get Corey Vereen and Curt Maggitt in pass-rushing situations together. So much so, in fact, that the Vols are doing some early work exploring essentially a hybrid 3-4 type of defense with Vereen and Maggitt."

Let's just stand up 6 pass rush ends and outside linebackers several yards off the line of scrimmage and then fire at the line like medieval warfare when the ball is snapped. One of those big uglies on the line is liable to go cross-eyed and forget to block one of them bad motor scooters.

That's exciting to think about. 50 and 56 will fold the the tackles in like a cheap shirt.

I like the idea of them using the 3-4 some. I think they have the personnel to run it. O. Williams, Carr, D. Barnett, Hendrix, Mixon would be ends. O'brien and Saulsberry could be NT or end, Mosely and Robertson would be NT, and Weatherd, J. Williams, Vereen, Maggitt, Latroy, Henderson would be OLB

I'm sure I forgot some people.

Awesome news right there. Was hoping they would do something along those lines to those two guys on the field and rushing the passer at the same time. I'm excited to see how that looks and works out. Those are definitely our best pass rushers at this point IMO. I'm also excited to see how they use Weathered. I like his potential at pressuring the QB as well. I think we will be much much better in that area than we were this past year. Which should really help out our young but talented DBs.

Boom. Love it. As the young Mr. Cherry would say, "#letsgetit".

My big problem with the 3-4 is that you can't stay in it. Just about anything the offense does, puts you in a 4 man front.

Don't forget about this guy !!!!

Not for a second. Rivals had Hendrix rated a top 5 DE in the country iirc. I think he comes in and helps as a true freshman. Vereen, Maggitt, Hendrix, Henderson, Weatherd, maybe a Vickers, a Miller or a Brown develop as well.... I can dig a little talent and depth at the DE position.

There is a lot of hybrid D being played in the NFL. When you have the talent to pull it off it gives the DC a lot of flexibility. Maybe they think that with Curt and Chris they have a couple of guys that can get it done.

Our pass Rush can't get much worse than it has been the pass few years. I'm way more worried about the O-Line

Yeah that's Hendrix . I think he will immediately be in the 2 deep rotation. And maybe push for substantial playing time. Kid is really quick off the ball and is relentless in his pass rush. If he can hold his own against the run he will give us nice depth.

I think the advantage here is that you can design and disguse blitzes a little more effectively, and it gives you the ability to put certain personnel on the field simultaneously ie Vereen, Maggitt, etc.

So does a 4-3 over front. Vereen plays the 5, Maggitt plays the 9.

Every one seems to forget about Henderson being in this class. That kid is a beast when it comes to situational pass rushing. I know all these kids are young, but we have greatly improved the teams overall athleticism with this class.

Very excited about Henderson, Hendrix and Weatherd joining the roster this summer. I think all 3 will make an early impact and push for early playing time. Nobody should forget about Henderson.... supposed to have great speed and explosion off the edge.

Yeah crazy how many more guys we still have coming in. Bates,TK jr, McDowell just to name a few. Really looking forward to the future!!!!

Got to admit that I haven't been this excited about Tennessee football in a very long time! We have so much talent coming in were gonna have talent coming out of our ears. Now it's time to WIN some damn games!!
