'14 JUCO LB Chris Weatherd (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Per Doug Matthews the GPA requirement for juco kids has been raised from a 2.0 to a 2.5 and he seems to think it is a long shot at this point for the kid to make it in. FWIW.

Who Changed the GPA requirement, The School? the SEC? or the NCAA?

The NCAA....

Well if that is how it works out then they might as well bring in Dews if he's still interested. Get Dews in the weight room and on the practice field and redshirt him.

Uh oh. Getting a JUCO on campus in August if at all doesn't bode well for him or us. If Dews can get in, I'd go ahead and take him. UT facilities > Prep facilities.

Right, but that is what got them into JUCO, not trying.

Some kids just don't have the mental makeup or support to be good students. Without knowing the individual well and seeing them study, you can't just say a kid's lazy.

you can't always blame the kid either. How did he get to this point? Early teachers? Coaches? Parents? Sometimes its too late in the game to turn it on and have good results.
There are a lot of kids in juco who could've been in college courses without issue, but can blame a lot of people in their younger years for issues with work ethic in the classroom.

Can't prove he didn't have someone pushing him. He may have partied or been lazy his first few years in academics, or just not realized how to manage his time being a student athlete. At the end of the day, if he doesn't make it in, it's no ones fault but his

I missed that part but was under the impression it was the NCAA. There were several other new rescrictions mentioned involving the types of credit hours considered acceptable, and the rules apply to anyone who enrolled in JUCO after August 2012. He talked about it for several minutes but I was in the middle of firing up the smoker so I missed quite a bit I am sure.

Included in the NCAA's academic reform package passed last spring were standards that as of the end of the 2013 academic year, junior college transfers must now have a 2.5 grade point average in their transferable credits in order to be eligible for a four-year school. That's not only up from a 2.0, but also higher than is required for initial eligibility for freshmen (2.3 under the new NCAA rules) and significantly higher than virtually every university requires for continuing eligibility.

Once again when I think the NCAA is getting some sense, here comes this. Heck an high schooler doesn't need a 2.5 only as 2.3 core to enter?????

How the heck can you not make a 2.5 in JUCO? You have to not even try.

I'm not gonna drop any names, but I have a relative who is a coach in a JUCO in the south. Trust me when I say that some JUCO players get into the SEC that never should be there. I've been around some of them and they have no business in any college. Where there's a will, there's a way :salute::salute::salute:

Went to juco for 2 years to get my AA and then transferred to a university which I just graduated from. Juco was harder.. First 2 years is all math, chem, bio etc. (core classes) when I got to university being a sport management major it was cake. Get through the first 2 and it's smooth sailing.

While this may be true for a lot of majors, there are also a lot of majors with classes that get harder as you move towards graduation (maybe not the typical fb player majors, though).

So, The new rule was issuied before signing day? If so I think he makes it in. Doug just looking for subscriber's.

I really like Doug and respect his opinions because of his loyalty to and contacts within the program. But he was wrong about Weatherd in terms of being a part of this class to begin with when he wasn't an EE. Being a former JUCO himself, I think Doug has issues Weatherd because he hasn't handled his business in the classroom at his JUCO what appears to be 2 times now.

While I would love to have Chris in Orange, if he is not willing to do the work in the classroom to meet the MINIMUM requirements to play at Tennessee, it's his own fault.
