'14 JUCO LB Chris Weatherd (UT Signee 2/5/14)

If Maggit moves to DE, it would most likely be as a LEO. Vereen is also a Leo, so I'd imagine they only line up opposite way other in passing situations.

Maggit could probably make a good Leo, but he's not a strongside end.

Jordan Williams is the only strongside DE on the returning roster worth seeing the field. I'm interested to see who we use as his backup in 2014. Most likely a true freshman IMO.

One of the better athletes on the team. RS'd last year. More than likely the Mike as stated. Will be in the two deep for sure IMO.

It seems like the coaches had a reason for all the redshirts they used on upperclassmen. They could've used King on special teams all year, but they chose to RS him instead.

Maybe they think he could be a big contributor on D and wanted to make sure they could have him for that extra year.

You guys think Maggitt puts his hand on the ground next year? If so, who does he supplant, Vereen or Williams?

I think he stays at LB, but might ply on the line of scrimmage or with his had in the dirt on 3rd down or obvious passing situations.

In those situations, we could use a "lightning" or "nascar" front like you see many teams do with a front looking something like Maggit/O Williams/Hendrix(or whoever is one of our stronger pass rushing SDEs)/Vereen.

If, by some chance, he was moved to DE. He would have to be a Leo. He's not got the skill set to play SDE.

I know we don't have it, but I'd prefer 280 at the SDE.

Shaun Ellis type player. That dude was a BAUCE

I think around 260-270 would be ideal myself. We could have a few of those guys 2-3 years down the road between Miller, Hendrix, Thomas, Butcher, etc.

Next season, we'll likely be a bit undersized. Miller has the frame to carry that muh weight though. He just needs to develop his body and add muscle mass. He was 260 coming out of high school without a whole lot of "good" weight.

I like the idea of moving him down in the nickel, slide a smaller, quicker coverage backer out there in his spot (JRM or Bates?)

Let Maggitt and Vereen fly off the edges on those passing downs.

Wow he was 260 coming out? I thought he was like 240. That's nice to hear. What do you think Miller's ceiling is?

It's an appealing idea. This season they used similar looks on the DL where they subbed in multiple DEs to rush the passer. I don't think it's much of a stretch to assume they'd let Maggit do the same (plus I think Weatherd has a similar skill set to Maggit in that he has the get off to rush the passer).

I think it will come down to whether they trust the you younger guys in coverage enough to move Maggit/Weatherd up to the line of scrimmage

Weight wise or talent wise? Weight wise I'd say he could probably bulk up to 270 or so by the time he's and upperclassmen. Coming out of high school, there was speculation he could move inside because he was already so heavy (kind of similar to a Derek Barnett build, but Barnett is listed to be taller I think).

Talent wise, I'm not sure. I don't claim to be a talent evaluator. I just know that the coaching staff was thrilled to have him on board and that his highlight tape made him out to a really high motor guy. But it's always good to be a little wary of highlight tape because you don't get to look at the non "splash" plays a kid has.

Well the guys we had at backer weren't that great at all in coverage this past season. Here's to hoping we have a few young guns on the roster next year that can run with somebody.

I'm hoping for the same. JRM has shown some promise this far on special teams. Hopefully he can develop his talents at LB this season.

Bates definitely has the athleticism to play in coverage. I think it's just a matter of when he's ready. We're bringing in a lot of talented guys, but te inexperience is scary.

Edit: Also, who knows if Maggit rushing the passer could make our coverage look better or not. I have faith in the coaches to figure out how to use him and our other LBs.

Agreed, we will be so very young and inexperienced.

I feel that Bates has a better chance of being "ready" than any of the others. Instant contributor on ST, with the potential to contribute meaningfully on passing downs.

He's a legit 6'3" 220 with outstanding technique and tutelage
