'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

Dawsonville I imagine is going to be quite a change from the mid atlantic. Probably a good hour plus from Atlanta.

So good to see a kid, not from Tennessee, to see just how special this place is and do whatever it takes to be part of it. Not to mention how smart it is for a kid so young to see the best route for him to take to be successful since he is a year younger. Props to MD and family as well as Jerome himself! This is going to be a great story!

I understand that. My question was, how can someone who has already played 4 years of high school, go to a prep school and play another year, and then enroll in college and still have 4 years of eligibility? And by the way, do these prep schools only play other prep schools or do they play high schools?

Sorry, that one is too far over my head.

My backyard pretty much!

Is that you Bill Elliott?

Trust me, they stuck with us, he will stick with them, if we dont teach him anything, we will teach him about LOYALTY!

I think we were raised with the same values - and hopefully we've both instilled them in our kids. So glad you're part of VolNation and will be so proud when your son becomes another brick in the wall...(I hear music in my head...)

He never refused the grayshirt, the staff has been forthcoming the whole time, nothing shady was going on, great staff and honest the whole time

MDObserver, will you please keep us up to date while Jerome's at prep? A lot of us would love to hear how he's doing. Also, think I speak for a lot of us when I say he's really won our hearts in a lot of ways. His old man ain't half bad either. :)

VOL Trivia Can anybody name the All American that played a PG year before entering UT. Not sure but he may be the only VOL to do so. No pressure Jerome.

Hint: Franco Harris put a stiff arm on him that I will forget. He did get Harris out of bounds. Lead the nation in interceptions his junior year I do believe.

Bobby Majors?

Exactly.......do you think he is the only one to come out of prep school to become a Vol.

not sure..I really wouldn't even know how to research it..one thing I do know is that he and Johnny were both pound for pound two of the toughest players to ever wear the Vols jersey

Berry broke 2 of his records I think in 3 yrs of playing....this will be the best move for Dews...just want him on campus as soon as he can get here....a true diamond in the rough....kid is a hoss....

The NCAA gives you a 1 year leeway after high school graduation where you don't lose eligibility. So Dews will still have his 5 years to play 4 as long as the prep school meets the proper conditions, which I'm sure it does.

From the NCAA

Entering freshmen will not be charged a season of competition for participating in athletics at a prep school within the first twelve months following high school graduation.

Not far at all - less than 30 mins. :)

FWIW, Carson Newman used to be a powerhouse in their division. They've slipped a little (2 losses in 2013 - lol) but for ages they were unstoppable. They've produced over 10 NFL players and considering they're a D2 school and a very small one at that it's pretty amazing.

That kind of competition is definitely gonna be good prep for Jerome. Carson Newman really is one of those schools that could make the jump to D1 as they have players that could've played anywhere. The only thing that holds them back is being a small private school.

Let me just say, bless you and your family MDO. I, along with many others, truly appreciate yours and Jerome's loyalty and passion for the Big O! It makes me appreciate having folks like you guys involved in our program. :salute:

I live there and go to a alot of their games..small town but really nice stadium. The Eagles are one of the better DII schools, their coach Ken Sparks, is a past president of the AFCA and has won more games than anyone in DII

Let me know when you come up and I can give you the full 3 minute tour of the city :)

Just thinking, this could potentially be our Lorenzo Featherston type of lanky pass rusher down the road. Still looking forward to watching this kid develop.
