'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

stars are not "meaningless", there is ample statistical analysis (that has been posted on this board many times) that shows just the opposite.

again, it is very easy to point to the exception (Fisher), and yell "see!! see!!, i told you stars don't matter!!", but that is not indicative of the norm.

To your point, this is not a normal take for this staff. They obviously see something in this guy that the stars don't. Obviously if his 40 time is 4.6 rather than a 5.4 that is a HUGE difference in the star classification.

I trust the coaches on this one.

agreed - stars aren't meaningless but the evaluations also aren't completed yet so if he has 4.6 speed and is 6'3 i wouldnt be surprised at all to see his ranking go up - also with a UT offer I think the services will re-evaluate the kid

Boom! Welcome to VOLNATION. Keep up with his Senior season because that is when 2* jump to 4*. Show it on the field and the other offers will come. Thanks CBJ and Staff for showing this young man that you have confidence in him. I feel that is just what the kid needed and his senior year he will be playing with confidence and prove he is deserving of a Scholy.

agreed.

again, the star discussion was not in relation to this kid per se, but a stand alone discussion that broke out within his thread

THIS would be amazing in 2-3 years
Agreed. Forgot to add, but if Adoree Jackson wants in, you make room.

I've learned through my studies of the NFL draft, you take your top players in most situations and you'll be fine. Probably why we ended up with no true DTs last year and might not get a QB this year. It doesn't always work like that, especially in recruiting I guess.

Do find it interesting that it's been 12+ hours since his commitment and no services show him as one of yet. Maybe they are just as shocked as a lot of UT fans.

I'm all in on this one. I just watched his Hudl highlights agian and realized he was only 15 for the majority of that season. High ceiling.

Is Dews friends with the kids at H. D. Woodson, Friendship Collegiate, or DeMatha?

He is friends with Payne.

Just curious if he's close to any of the other elite prospects in the area. He's extremely young and should basically be in the class of '15. Not a bad plan starting a pipeline into DC.

Yeah 247 had us as offering, then him fully committing, then him walking-on/greyshirting, now us offering and we are his "favorites".

Lolwut. I'll hang up and keep watching.

Best case scenario: Butch identified a diamond in the rough a la Eric Fisher.

Worst case: We get a depth/special teams player who has a chance to develop into a starter by his senior year a la Dontavius Sapp.

Only time will tell, but as for now I'm putting my faith in Butch and hoping we got a good one with this kid.

It's crazy how people only care about our rankings

I really don't get worked up about the rankings of recruits. I tend to use offer lists as a more telling sign of where a recruit is in terms of ability. The kid could get to campus, redshirt, and be a star in 2015. He could also never see a snap. Have to trust the coaches as it's their jobs on the line. My feeling is that it's awful early for this kid to be a take.

Good read. With him only turning 17 in November he's basically a year ahead grade-wise. Most kids turning 17 this November will be Juniors. There does seem to be a lot of upside as far as his age and athleticism. The coaches obviously saw something to where they felt they had to offer. Especially considering all the other LB's we're in on. Redshirt him, add weight and muscle, and let Lawson get him in top notch shape. After that, he could be someone to watch going into '15.

i agree with this just based on the caliber LB's we are in on right now. its a head scratcher.

I hate to point this out, because the Fisher story is great, but there's a difference between taking a guy like Fisher at CMU and taking a guy like Fisher at UT. Imagine if we took Fisher, imagine the VN meltdown.

My point is most players they got were "in the rough" so to get one really bright shining star from the rough is a lot easier when you're taking 15+ a year instead if 1-2 at most.

I do really like Fisher though. Him and Matt Kalil will be the best OTs in the NFL in a few years.
