'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

Thanks LV. Here is a little excerpt. Seems we will not be getting one of the linebackers we had at the top of our list...

"Potomac Coach Ronnie Crump said Tennessee initially could not guarantee a slot in the 2014 class and last week had offered a grayshirt arrangement in which Dews would join the 2015 class. But on Monday night, Head Coach Butch Jones, defensive coordinator John Jancek and linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen called to assure him that a linebacker spot in the 2014 class would be available and Dews quickly accepted."

“For them to be an SEC school and take that chance on me with me having no other big offers shows they’re nothing but real people,” said Dews, who as of early Tuesday morning did not have a star rating from Rivals.com. “They don’t care about publicity and all that stuff, the politics. They like me, and they don’t care about none of that other stuff.”

By the end of the day, Jones had Dews and Crump in his office and said he was “98 percent sure” he would offer in a few days after going over tape of the camp and Dews’ junior highlights.
“He was the big surprise of the camp,” Crump said. “There were some heavy hitters there, too. … Basically, they told me his upside is just too great to not offer.”

stars are not "meaningless", there is ample statistical analysis (that has been posted on this board many times) that shows just the opposite.

again, it is very easy to point to the exception (Fisher), and yell "see!! see!!, i told you stars don't matter!!", but that is not indicative of the norm.

Have to agree fully with this.:good!:

Another excerpt. Should shut up all of the speed doubters

"Dews said he realized he’d caught the Tennessee coaches’ attention after a strong effort in the three-cone drill, showcasing uncommon quickness and agility for his size."

I wouldn't say that right now. We need 5-6 this year.

Seems pretty early to be giving up on a top priority recruit, if butch and co gave him a committable offer then he must have shown out at camp like the article says. Good luck to Dews if this is all legit.

Interesting pick-up. It seems unusual for a linebacker to fly completely under the radar for so long, with Temple being the only D-1 school to offer besides Tennessee. The coaches must have seen some other good intangibles in this kid besides just a frame, maybe good football smarts and strong leadership abilities. My only voice for concern is not with Dews, but where that puts us with the other stud linebackers in the class. Petera Wilson, Clifton Garrett, Mouhon, and recently Nyles Morgan, Rashaan Evans, Jamadre Cobb, & and Dwight Williams - all players in the Rivals 250, except Mouhon who is a 4 star - had recently mentioned interest in Tennessee or in wanting to visit, on top of Ell Berry who looks like a Will LB. . .they must like Chris Weatherd on the ground, that's my only thought.

With every pickup like this(Dews), I honestly think kids waiting till anywhere near NSD will be long off our board. From what I see, the staff is just not going to wait on anyone.

CBJ to recruit: "Ready to commit"?

Recruit: "No".

CBJ: "Next"!

I have a hard time seeing Elliot Berry end up at OLB. I think he plays Saftey in college. With Dews being a sure red shirt candidate, we need more LB help. JMO
This.

LB: Dews, Mouhon, Bates, Bryant, Weatherd (JUCO), and if Garrett/Miller want to commit you let them.

CB: Payne, Gaulden, Smith, maybe another or a JUCO (Evan Berry here or WR)

S: Kelly Jr, Elliot Berry, McDowell

Maybe they want to be completely done with recruiting for 2014 by the start of the season! It has definitely been an interesting recruiting summer!

THIS would be amazing in 2-3 years
