'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

Honestly, I think if anything the kid's reaction to the staff's honesty makes this a big plus in recruiting. He said the staff was honest with and believed in him---how many highly touted kids blow their talent and ability every year? This kid will come in and work hard---we will fill out the class and if we have some elite kids drop to us we'll make room. If he's a baller it will be a great story....it will send a message to the high school athlete that we are recruiting based on the attitude and work ethic not on stars.

I really don't get worked up about the rankings of recruits. I tend to use offer lists as a more telling sign of where a recruit is in terms of ability. The kid could get to campus, redshirt, and be a star in 2015. He could also never see a snap. Have to trust the coaches as it's their jobs on the line. My feeling is that it's awful early for this kid to be a take.

Offer lists usually are a telling sign, I agree. But what if a kid doesn't get out and go to camps and plays at a small school or transferred and didn't get much exposure. It's possible that he could lost in the cracks until he goes out to a camp and performs well. Which is what Dews did at UT.

I'm willing to bet if he went to a handful more camps this summer around the east coast/southeast his offer list would look a lot different. JMO

FULL RIDE! and i say that with PRIDE, tuition statement will read ZERO BALANCE!!

Congrats, you must be very proud. From what I read in the article, he sounds very excited to be a Vol & that's the kind of kids we need here! I have a feeling he will "Give his all for Tennessee". Can't help but to pull for kids like this, I hope nothing but the best for him & hope he has a very successful college career here at The University of Tennessee.

I still haven't seen anywhere saying he is Committed besides Twitter.

Anyway, maybe Butch is an advocate of the Make-a-Wish foundation. One possible "diamond in the rough" commitment per year.

With the staff changing their tune from being a gray shirt offer to a full ride for 2014, does anyone think this could be connected to Bates announcing on Monday and the coaches possibly getting bad news yesterday??? Not trying to stir the pot, but is a viable thought it seems.

I certainly hope not. That would make me sick .

Dews > Bates

This kinda reminds of Dante Hightower. If you have the size you can be molded and coached to be a great LB. so congrats to him and welcome big orange country!!

stars are not "meaningless", there is ample statistical analysis (that has been posted on this board many times) that shows just the opposite.

again, it is very easy to point to the exception (Fisher), and yell "see!! see!!, i told you stars don't matter!!", but that is not indicative of the norm.
Thanks, Norm

Just curious.....how does this guy get an offer and not McCleise(sp)?

My guess is that McLisse has a lower ceiling because he is pretty developed physically. Dews is young and at 6'3" 200 lbs. and running 4.6 can develop into a potential starter.

I don't think so because they will take 4-5 linebackers anyway. However this is recruiting and anything can happen. I personally think that Bates has been a Vol for a while but he wanted to commit on his own day.

Ok I normally do not chime in on prospects and their talent, but you can tell by watching the first 2 minutes of his HUDL film: A. He does not run a 5.5 40. and B. he has a ton of room to add weight.

Another thing is a 4.22 shuttle time at age 15 or 16 is not bad at all. However, I am not going to say he is the next great OLB or rush DE at UT. I like his potential though, and I hope he does great things here!

Maybe it's a positive sign to our LB recruiting. Maybe the staff has locked up 3-5 great LBs and felt they were set up well to take a chance on a huge project that could develop in a couple/three years.
