'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

How many offers did this years #1 draft pick have and how many were "big" schools? Who found that diamond in the ruff? And who did he wind up playing for and still excelled after the coach left? I trust Butch here! Glad to have you kid!...no homo.

Not speaking in terms of this particular recruit but more in general.. Eric Fisher was the exception. For every 50,000 2 stars you may have one Eric Fisher.

I've said this like 5x on this board. The example is cool for us and Butch to bring up, but it's not cool to compare every 2* to him or Watt (who was a 2* TE that committed to play for Butch at CMU, however he was also recruited by Kelly before he bolted IIRC).

1) kid won't be a 2* when he signs

2) it is reason to believe that Butch can identify talent regardless of whether someone else has already identified that talent first.

agreed. look at it this way. Reggie Long was rated a 3* and Dews is better than Long on tape. All Dews needs to do is work on his tackling. If he can put his facemask on the ball instead of some of the arm tackles, he will shutup the haters and cause more fumbles.

1. Thanks recruiting analyst from Rivals/247

2. Right but there's no reason to keep comparing 2* recruits to him, especially a LB

I'm completely fine with this pick up. Sounds like an intriguing prospect. Also sounds low risk, since the staff may move him to greyshirt and he likely won't affect their ability to get other linebacker prospects.

We only have 4 scholarship LBs returning next year, and two of those (potentially) could leave early. The more we get, the merrier IMO.

Kind of a side note, but what site are you subscribed to Ron? I would like to subscribe and contribute from another site, but maybe one that no one currently "covers." Any suggestions?

Oxon Hill isn't too far from me. I'll have to try and catch a game or two this year.

I just noticed your post. Actually, Potomac plays Leonardtwon High in Leonardtown this year. That would be even closer don't you think. I noticed you hail from LP city.

Ron is rivals/volquest. Wutang is scout, and I forget who usually does 247

What POA said. Lynxvol posts stuff from 247.

I've never subscribed to any site but Volquest so I can't speak to the others but Hubbs and Fortenberry are the best in the business for gaining inside information and sharing, from what I can tell. They're always getting quotes from players for their articles, giving daily nuggets and providing a really good service to Vol fans who want to know what's going on in the program. But they don't have a "recruiting forum" like VN, it's everything to do with UT on one forum. Makes for a chaotic nightmare most of the time.

Also, with a rivals/VQ sub you can watch player highlight films (some that aren't on HUDL or Youtube) and you can read articles on all the other rivals team sites plus stuff from their national guys. It's worth the $ but at the same time most of the info ends up here in a matter of minutes if not seconds most of the time. :)

I prefer VN for hanging out and keeping track of what's going on in recruiting and general UT FB, this is the best board out there. IMO

I didn't make it through the top five of last year's draft before finding at least one other player who was rated lower than Eric Fisher.

I believe Lane Johnson was 0 stars.

Also, I couldn't find Ezekial Ansah. I believe that he was very poorly rated (or not rated at all).

Plenty of 2*s and lower make it to the NFL.

Obviously, a higher percentage of 5* players make NFL than 4*, 3*, etc. BUT, plenty of 2* & many 3* players make it to the NFL.

Lane Johnson, at one point, was a QB in Juco then moved to OT.

Ziggy was born in Ghana and made it in to BYU on an academic scholly. He actually ran for the track team. True freak. He was a walk on for the football team also.

So, I guess you guys are saying all bases are covered? No site anyone's a little interested in getting info from? BLEACHER REPORT??

I saw his rivals profile, but I couldn't believe that was the same guy. From QB to OT? How did I miss that story?

While I might say he reminds me a bit of Peter Boulware...it is ridiculously early to try to figure out this kid’s game yet. He’s just way too raw and can do most things on instinct. When his SR film comes out (and if he’s allowed to play more traditional LB) things will appear clearer.

Nothing really new, but wanted to post:

And it's worth noting that, because Jerome Dews could end up grayshirting, UT still could pick up a couple more linebackers in the 2014 class before it's all said and done.

Were do you think a comittment like this puts us with a guy like Bates? Makes your wonder if he'll choose of the Alabama or Florida on his committment day
