'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

Reaction to this kid very similar to reaction to Butch being hired.

I'll feel better if more schools offer but looking at Weatherd and knowing they thought about Creamer at LB I'm wondering if tall and athletic is just what they want at one of the LB or Leo positions.

Warming up to him a lot.

"They didn't know nothing about me — literally, nothing," Dews told InsideTennessee.

When exactly he's part of the Vols' 85-man roster and running onto Shields-Watkins Field donning the orange is up in the air but he fully well plans to be at Tennessee.

"Yes, but I'm going to take all my officials though," said Dews, who hopes to see Clemson, James Madison, Ohio State and South Carolina.

"I went down to the camp. My coach had told coach Thig to look out for me," Dews said. "I went down to the camp and performed real good, very well in everything I did —*drills, 40, 1-on-1s. In 1-on-1s, I played receiver and linebacker. The only one who caught a pass on me was*Daniel Helm. I had three interceptions.

"On offense, couldn't no one check me. The dude that smoked out that ran a 4.3, I cooked him on a back-shoulder fade and snagged the ball from him. After I did that, the head coach ran up to me and was like, 'You better not leave this camp without trying to talk to me.' And, I ran across and talked to him. He was like, 'You're a very good player.' And, he really liked me and was 98 percent sure to giving me a scholarship. And, he was like, 'Give me two days to watch my film and we should go from there.'"

"Man, I can talk to him about any and everything," Dews said of Thigpen. "He's just a great dude. I know when I arrive I will have almost like a father to me on campus. Yeah, I can talk to him about any and everything and he seems like he wouldn't mind."

"I really like coach Butch Jones, too. It's not common to get such a good connection with a head coach you've only known for a week and a day."

"I just know they did say they're losing some linebackers and they're really in need of some linebackers," Dews said.

"D'Andre Payne, we're real close friends. So, whenever he'll be there, I'll be there," said Dews, who resides in Oxon Hill, Md., about 12 miles from Washington, D.C.

There is nothing to. ask, we are locked in, I don't know the rules of Vols coaches as far as going on other officials but it really dosent matter, B Jones took a shot in the dark and we stand by that, we know Jerome can ball so its not that suprising to us maybe it is to some of you, but those coaches showed loyalty when we talked to them, and that's what we are about, he may take all the visits he wants (5) but at the end of the day, we roll with Jones and The Thig, and I'm sorry I used roll, to close to well yall know! He's a Vol, and that is all!!!!!

Thanks for posting. Please ignore the "negavols" on here. I trust the coaching staff to evaluate talent. He must have talent and potential for them to take a shot on him. He was kind of an unknown quantity before the camp. Can't wait to root for him in orange.
:good!:

Maryland-based LB Jerome Dews to @InsideTennessee: "I see a lot of people hating on me but that's OK. You've got to deal with adversity."

Its a damn shame that people who never played an organized sport outside of Madden would hate on a kid who is actually putting in the work to be great. There's a reason why couch potato coaches sit on the couch eating potatoes.

Hey, as a dad who cooks, I appreciate that. I've got mad skills in the kitchen! (As long as it involves a grill, a venison recipe, or the old stand-by "breakfast for dinner"!)

Initially this is a head scratcher but I generally try to trust the coaches evaluation over what rivals has to say so I hope this guy pans out for us.

I would not just trust any coaches on evals because Fulmer's evals started to come just from stars ect. in his last few years and Dools was Dools who did hit on some.

But these guys having been doing this and actually finding guys who did develop and help them win the conferences they are in. I would trust them far above any other of these recruiting analysis ect. From what I am hearing with this cat in camp, we got a very good one who has just not been political or camped enough for rivals to guess at the number they should rate him. They are very political.

Reminds me of Coach Boone when Sunshine goes into the game........."we got us a football player"

Nobody's taking a hit on the kid. Everybody is just questioning the move. What does everybody NOT understand about that? It happens with every fanbase. I can guarantee you every Vol fan wants this kid to succeed in Orange, but there will be questions from some. Is it really that hard to understand?
