'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

He is still listed with a 5.4 sec 40. I thought he was timed at 4.5 secs. Is this correct and just not been updated on the recruiting sites?
Gents he runs a 4.6 according to Tennessee coaches stopwatch, that's what they clocked him at at your one day, again the 5.4 was at a Nike camp his Freshman year, the only Nike camp he ran a 40 at, so that's why its still posted, clearly he much faster than a 5.4, and i would agree he has a lot of strength training to do!

Look at Jerod Mayo in HS. He is built just like Jerome. Anybody can add muscle.

I think when you look at the Emannuel Moseley thread and Jakob Johnson thread you can see that the fans who pay attention have realized that this staff offering a kid without stars doesn't mean the kid can't play. I feel that Jerome Dews is a big part of that because he's having another really solid season from what we have heard.

Dews was credited with seven tackles and two sacks as well as five catches for 56 yards and a touchdown on offense in Potomac's 18-12 loss to Gwynn Park. Next week they face Largo.

I was thinking he reminded me of a Raynoch-type kid. Raynoch(yer-head-off) was a 6'3 gangly kid when he came in. He sat for a year, developed physically and mentally, and started playing in 97 as a Soph with Little in the middle and Al at the SAM....still the best 3 trio I've ever seen together. Granted I don't go back prior to the 70's or so.

Good comparison. Raynoch still wasn't that big (weight) as a LB. Chief liked them smaller and fast.

Yep, I don't remember what weight he came in at. He played pretty much his whole career at UT at the 195-210 range, which is insanely thin for an OLB, but boy could he fly and lay the lumber for being so slight.

It's looking like the only gray shirt Dews is going to be getting is the alternate jersey, once a year

I would rather not grey shirt him since next year will be a smaller class anyhow. Unless of course we pull one of those big fish there will be rumors about around NSD.

Dews comments on the UGA game...

Butch Jones is amazing. He's not scared to take chances at all and we will win a crystal ball and that is a promise. I like him a lot and he has a lot in store for us.

This kid is putting up huge numbers to include multiple sacks almost every game. Is he still a gray shirt or would we just simply try to redshirt him instead. I am excited to see his stats every week and can't wait to see how he fits in the D on the hill!

Dews: I will be a gray shirt....one game a year.

Because some people think that when we take a guy that has fewer than 4 stars next to his name, he must be a project.

This.

It's interesting to me that people still don't get it with this kid. The rating services are still relying on physical stats (esp his 40 time) that are completely inaccurate. Our coaches had him in camp and were so impressed with his size, speed and ability that they wouldn't let him leave camp without an offer. I think the stats he is piling up this year indicate that the coaches found one that slipped through the recruiting cracks.:peace2:

Why are people talking about Dews being a gray shirt?

Because Hubbs and Fortenberry said he was very likely going to be a gray shirt. He's young for his grade, only 16 I believe. With the stats he's putting up this fall it may be hard to keep him as a gray shirt. UT might have to give him a normal scholarship or lose him to another team who will.

Or it could just be because of what Paul Fortenberry and Brent Hubbs, the two people closest to the program, have said about him. They are in the know about this and everything else regarding recruiting.

He may agree to a gray shirt just to be a Vol! I know that I would.

Just now...

Is gray shirting Dews still a possibility?

I think it still may be a possibility. But, I don't think there is a big numbers issue right now, personally.

I don't think they want to greyshirt Dews unless they have to.

He is killing it as a linebacker.

Bring him in and if needed, reshirt him. Kid is a nasty linebacker that is always around the ball.
