'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

Just now...

Is gray shirting Dews still a possibility?

-Fortenberry

Didn't hubbs just post this morning we had a significant numbers issue??

Very contradictory iirc

Edit:

Hubbs earlier today:
The realty is that there's a real chance that some good looking prospects may get told there is no room.

Yea...WTF? How is there not a number's issue right now? We could take about 15 more players this cycle and we have spots for 7, maybe.

I don't see the fascination with this guy. He's suppose to be a lb but his recent highlights have him at WR a majority of the time, and nothing really stands out compared to other recruit highlights I've watched. Hope I'm missing something.

Or it could just be because of what Paul Fortenberry and Brent Hubbs, the two people closest to the program, have said about him. They are in the know about this and everything else regarding recruiting.

Edit: Swansoned

What I understand to be the case is that the numbers are changing, and his play and stats are such that he may be a take this year and red shirt him next year. I believe that even Fortenberry is saying this now. We will be more pressed for numbers next year. At any rate I believe the coaches believe this kid has a tremendous upside and that was and has been my point.:peace2:

Yes, it appears the staff would prefer not to gray shirt him anymore as stated by Fortenberry. However, when he first committed he was said to very likely end up a gray shirt. Obviously that has changed some and Dews might be on scholarship next fall.

Personally, I wish he were an EE and on campus in a couple months. JMO

I'm not in favor of having any grey shirts this year because next year's class will be a smaller one. There is a ton of talent in 15 and I want every open spot possible.

He's saying that it'll all work out and we shouldn't worry about it

So it sounds as if we are gonna keep dews. I like having a couple diamonds in the rough for each class. Cam sutton!

I haven't watched the highlights yet. But from what I can tell, he has 39 tackles and 8 sacks in the 4 games that stats were reported on. I couldn't find stats for 2 of his games. But 39/8 is pretty good in 4 games.

There is more to Hubbs' original quote. Context.

This.

I think the stats he is piling up this year indicate that the coaches found one that slipped through the recruiting cracks.:peace2:

Exactly.

Let our coaches do work. They've been here 10 months and have done more to restore our brand than 3 coaches did in the previous 8 years.

"I'm still committed to Tennessee. I went down there and they didn't know about me. When I showed up and performed, Coach Jones said there was a 99% chance that I was getting a scholarship. He stuck with that and three days later he had a scholarship for me. With him being new, I was never on their board but he didn't care about rankings. He wasn't political like a lot of schools and he took a chance on me."

"It is excellent. We got the #2 or #3 recruiting class in the country and a bunch of players from Maryland."

-Maryland Rivals

Says Pitt, Arizona, tOSU, and Maryland are still recruiting him.

Was there ever a quote from him regarding grey shirting???

He committed very early to accept such a deal IMO

I remember when he first committed, Paul and Hubbs thought it was a given that he would GS.

Now things have changed. It seems like Dews averages 9 tackles and 2 sacks every time he plays. So his stock is on the rise (evidenced by the Pitt and tOSU attention).

I'm just really not sure where he fits in. I don't see him being a major contributor at LB (especially with who we have coming in). I see him rushing off the edge in some sub packages at Leo. But is he going to take away meaningful snaps from Vereen next year or so on? That I don't know.

He's 205 and thin right now. He comes in and red shirts to add size and then he's got 2-3 years to play after JRM and Vereen are gone.

I'm not sure, but I think if he gets in the 225-230 range and keeps his speed and coverage skills, he could compete with Mouhon, contribute in special teams, and be a terror on third downs. At the very least he's quality depth.

We'll see what happens but I think he's part of this class even if we get Garrett.

IMO Dews is exactly the type of player that we've been missing...and by that I mean quality depth

The elite teams go 3-4 deep with not much drop off from the starters...we haven't had that kind of depth since 2004

Again JMO

I think this kid definitely fits in somewhere in our team. Give him a year to redshirt and he has the athleticism to be a special teams ace for us for a year or two before seeing snaps on D.

Evidently, he's been fitting in the backfield of his opponents very nicely.
