'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

Do you think Dews can slide down to DE on 3rd down? Always want more pass rushers.

he is not big enough to play LB right now - one of the reasons you seem as low as you do - you never know where he might end up but i would say this is nowhere in the short term plans

if he can add some weight and not lose his speed then he has a shot to be a really good LB - but wouldnt project him to DE

I'm not saying he'll be a four down dlineman. His speed and nose to the ball could be better in a smaller but quicker pass rush package. It'd get a lot more speed on the field.
I figure he'll gain enough to be around 220.

Isn't he about the same size as Maggitt was his senior year of HS? Curt was listed as 6'3" 195, Dews is listed as 6'3" 198/200 (rivals/247). Once he's in UT's S&C program he'll add weight no problem.

i got you - kinda like they are saying they may use Weatherd

i am not saying he couldnt get big enough to do that - i would just guess that they are not necessarily recruiting him for that role - could be wrong certainly but i would think he is being recruited as the LB that would be in coverage on passing downs

yeah i don't think this kind of a weight add should be a problem at all in a S&C program - just think it may take a couple of years, which is fine - CM looked bigger to me coming out of HS - 247 had him at 215 - no clue if either of the weights are accurate

Dews looks like a stick in his video. He's going to have to put on a ton of weight to play in the SEC.

I think this kid is gifted in getting into the backfield. Butch has more than one role for this kid. He could probably both cover and pass rush after his redshirt.

yeah the more things he is capable of the more difficult it would be for opposing offenses - no doubt on that

I think this is a pure speed-height-athleticism pickup that would be interesting to see how he can develop

5* LB Matthew Thomas was listed as 6'3" 205. Who knows Dews could end up being a stud.

Not a Grey-Shirt candidate anymore, IMO.

I respectfully disagree with you. Dews is a greyshirt unless somebody hat-screws us at the last second.

I'm glad he is having a great year but there is still a ton of talent interested in us. I would not want to turn the following players away to move Dews up a year.

I think he can be used that way, to bring pressure off the edge.

Like Ron said, he has the same measurables as Maggitt in HS. Maggitt put on serious mass pretty quick too. Maybe Dews can Dew it as well to take the pounding of 300 pound linemen and physical tightends.

A lot of people don't like the idea of turning down already committed players, for better players. Dews isn't a greyshirt player, especially if any other top schools offer him. It'll take magic to get him to be a greyshirt by NSD. You either role with him or you cut him now to give him time to find a new home.

IMO that is how it should be. Either roll with the kid or do something now so he has time to look at his options. For all we as fans know Dews could be all for a GS and have no issue with it at all. Maybe that has been the plan all along. I'm just not sure how the kid could accept a GS, commit, and pass on taking other visits and or looking at options this early. If he were a local kid, it would make more sense. Being from MD, not so much.

I understand what you are saying... and I agree with that in most cases. But if we told Dews in the beginning that he was a greyshirt candidate, then we are doing what we said we were going to do. Not recruiting over him. His best offer besides UT is still Temple.

Anybody think our staff may have been surprised by their early recruiting success ? It could hurt somewhat cutting perceived lesser players for some studs late. Combine the draw of TN and it's facilities and the relentless recruiting of this staff and they may have unexpectedly found themselves in this position. If you're full and adoree decides for you on signing day, what do you do?
