'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

For the record Jerome loves The Vols, he is committed to the Vols, for those of you who care he is a kid and excited about the opportunity to play at the college level, so why wouldn't he take his visits, most recruits do it, we all know the offer from Tennessee was a bit surprising, but i think he lived up to expectations of the Tenn coaching staff, if they take his offer away because he visits another school, then so be it, i bet they encourage other kids that are committed to other schools to come take visits to Tennessee, Jerome is 100% Tennessee, all he needs is Tennessee to be 100% with him which i feel they have been.

I for one am looking forward to seeing him in orange. Just reading his stats, sounds like he is a really good football player. Thanks for posting! GBO!

:hi:

No one is arguing about a kid taking visits, but rather a kid taking visits while committed. Two totally different things IMO.
Good Point, but that is a decision he has to make and live with the consequences of that decision, hopefully he makes the right one, if B Jones does not want him to visit other schools as a commit, then i believe he shouldn't.

He hasn't certainly earned every right to make sure he is making the right decision though. If I had to guess, I am sure he will have other offers to consider in the future. Good for him.

Reading through the posts, I am going to make these assumptions. If Dews wants to play at football here he will GS. He is committed to us but With the GS option on the table and he should be allowed to look around.

There is no doubt he is an asset and will be an asset to any team he joins. I think he will look around and end up here as a GS. Assumption only. Gut feeling. It's a huge assumption on my part but Dews has a rapport with the staff and CBJ knows what is best for all concerned. It is about what is best for the team and not the individual.

It's hard to look a potential player in the eye and tell them we are going to gray shirt you and we don't want you to take visits. The only way Dews makes it on this team without the GS option is if one of the silents or open commitments, decommits..

Agreed. It's not just internet bantering amongst Vol fans. Both VQ and 247 have been suggesting this is the probable scenario since he first committed. Right now he is undersized and a year younger than all of the other seniors coming out of high school. That's why I think we are currently sitting at 26 schollies and will take the Berry twins and 2 DTs out of Lamin/Mosley/Reed. Garrett, Malone, and Jackson would be the only 3 big fish left Butch would make room for IMO.

Pretty spot on IMO. I'd also add in a 3rd RB like Scott if he wanted in.

Linebacker Jerome Dews commits to UT after earning scholarship offer at camp | Nooga.com

"The major recruiting services – Rivals.com, 247Sports.com and Scout.com *– have now come to the consensus that he is, indeed, a member of UT’s 2014 class, will sign with the Vols in February and be on scholarship immediately."

Potomac (Md.) LB Jerome Dews accepts surprise scholarship offer from Tennessee

"Potomac Coach Ronnie Crump said Tennessee initially could not guarantee a slot in the 2014 class and last week had offered a grayshirt arrangement in which Dews would join the 2015 class. But on Monday night, Head Coach Butch Jones, defensive coordinator John Jancek and linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen called to assure him that a linebacker spot in the 2014 class would be available and Dews quickly accepted."

He was offered a grayshirt initially....didn't commit. Coaches called back saying he had a spot in 14, and he committed. If we back out of our deal and try to get him to grayshirt again, I have no doubt that he will sign elsewhere.

If it is accurate that the staff offered him a sure scholarship in the 2014 class, I hope they stick to it. Maybe it's a learning experience for the staff. Careful offering project type kids that early. If it's going to be 2-3 years before they really contribute, wait till closer to NSD to see how the numbers play out and if there is room for such a project.

I agree, you are correct. Do you think that this staff put themselves in a learning experience mode? I hope not because it is the first rookie mistake they have made in the recruiting.

Of course, we don't know the numbers on the board either. Is Dews taking visits from what I have read I assume he is. I really like this kid and think his performance this year has backed up his performance at camp.

I just don't want to get into the syndrome of "Meat Market." At the moment, I refuse to believe this is CBJ's or this staff's style of doing business.

This is not the week to be dealing with this anyway. A lot can happen between now and NSD.

If Dews is gone or has been told to look around, what does that tell you about Garrett or some others not yet committed? Just curious?

Dude if this is really the case..he just screwed himself out of a schollie. Have fun at Purdue. That is a big IF however. Butch has discouraged a lot more heralded players from taking visits. Considering the guys we are in on, and how little room we have....not a good idea.

IF Dews trips to Purdue, I think he will not be a Vol.

I am all for the staff taking the commitment of any kid they think can help win games at Tennessee. Dews threw me for a loop when they took him because our immediate need at LB seemed to point to we needed LBs who could contribute/play early and he was certainly not in that group. Then the GS news came out and while it helped to understand taking him, I still was curious was he better than the 2015 LBs who seem very high on UT as a GS to Dews meant we could take 1 less in 2015.

I'm not sure how it all plays out numbers wise. I think we have 4 spots up for grabs. 5 IF Bryant does not work out.

Berry
Berry
Malone
Mosley
Juco DT

Seems to be how most think we finish out. IF we lose Bryant & Dews, another LB may be in the cards. IMO Garrett is all lsu.

Dews ain't in Wolf's league as a prospect. He is and always has been considered a project player.

I didn't say he was or was not in Wolf's league as I do not know how the staff view the two of them. I just pointed out that Wolf took a visit after he was committed after I saw where Bruin said that UT wouldn't be 100% with Dews if he took visits as that had clearly been their approach with our other commitments when that isn't completely accurate.

I understand. I am just saying that IMO, Dews's spot is shakier than Wolf's. It may be I am wrong however, the staff may consider Dews the next coming of Raynoch Thompson...who knows really outside of them?
