Committed Q&A: Potomac DE Jerome Dews

Article says he will take visits to Purdue and JMU. I doubt this will please Butch...

Best quote, after making 6 interceptions at the TN Summer Camp and then stealing a touchdown catch from the fastest DB there: "Coach Jones, he ran to me, he was like “Mr. Dews, you better not leave this camp without talking to me!”

It also sounds like the Coaches arn't quite sure yet where he will play...

"They don’t know if they want to put me at receiver, if they want to put me a linebacker, if they want to bulk me up and just let me rush off the edge."

If he is actually a gray shirt possibility, I would hope the coaches would let him take visits. The kid could be hung out to dry come NSD. IMO the staff needs to either take him as part of the 2014 class, or drop him all together and move on to other options. I don't see him take a GS now with an offer from a BIG10 school as an option.

Note: I have no information as to whether Dews' visits are self-initiated or coach-induced. What is true, is that the Vol's coaching staff have had numerous opportunities to evaluate Dews both in-person and on film. They will make the best decision for UT and we should stand by it no matter what they decide.

He seems pretty adamant that he will be on schol from day 1.

If he DOES pick Purdue, we can assume the UT offer was for a GS. No recruit would pick Purdue over UT without extenuating circumstances (Purdue legacy or whatever).

My guess is the staff told him to go ahead and take visits because the grey shirt is still the offer.

Well... Just Damn! I think I read this one wrong. You guys can let me have it if you wish because I really felt that he was a scholarship offer with no gray shirt contingency tied to it. Him taking visits would indicate otherwise.

If I had to guess, I would bet Dews won't end up in Orange. If the staff really wanted him, he would have an offer for the 2014 class and he would not be taking trips. I think the Purdue offer ended the chance he ends up a Vol. JMO

It's ok.

You guessed and made no attempt to be an "insider."

Right or wrong it's no big deal.

Now can the greyshirt police stop murdering the people suggesting greyshirts about certain players?

Only time I am for GS a kid is if he has been told from day 1 that a GS was the plan(Pretty sure Dews was always talked bout as a GS possibility from the day he committed). Injury, class filling up, wanting to take a higher rated guy, are not reasons to force a kid who is a long time commitment who felt he would be on scholarship to GS. JMO

Agreed, but like you said I don't think that is the case in this instance. Which is why I think he will end up at Purdue or some where other than UT after his quotes about being waaaay too good to GS unless he changes his mind about that.

Personally I think he could use at least a GS year (because of his age) and possibly a RS year (to continue to add good weight to a frame that really needs it b4 he is ready for the SEC). Not to mention that would give him a couple years of separation between he and the other beast-mode LBs we have in this class.

For the record Jerome loves The Vols, he is committed to the Vols, for those of you who care he is a kid and excited about the opportunity to play at the college level, so why wouldn't he take his visits, most recruits do it, we all know the offer from Tennessee was a bit surprising, but i think he lived up to expectations of the Tenn coaching staff, if they take his offer away because he visits another school, then so be it, i bet they encourage other kids that are committed to other schools to come take visits to Tennessee, Jerome is 100% Tennessee, all he needs is Tennessee to be 100% with him which i feel they have been.

Tennessee won't be 100% with him if he takes visits. That's clearly been the approach with our commitments
